Google Nest Hub Max continues to show curated photos

MrTech
Community Member

to date 1/3/23 I have the Google Nest Hub Max but it continually keeps displaying a selection of Google curated art. Even though I select "Google photos" in Photo frame and select live albums, having previously created a photo in Google photos website. I can see online that this issue has not been fixed to date. Thank you

Hey MrTech,

Thanks for reaching out. I know how challenging it is when you're having issues with one of the features on your Google Nest Hub Max. To confirm, is this a shared photo? Does your Nest Hub Max show the photo when you ask it via voice command? Did  you create a photo album for the photos? What is the current firmware version of your Nest Hub Max?

Check the version on your Nest display

  1. Swipe up from the bottom of the display screen.
  2. Tap Settings > About device. You should find your 'firmware version' on this page. If 'fuchsia version' is also listed, this means your device runs fuchsia.

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,
Muddi

Firstly many thanks for responding to my queries. I appreciate your help with these devices.

I am using the Google Nest Doorbell (battery) and Nest Hub Max. Both devices are very good, but the learning curve can be difficult at times. The technology is excellent. Software is good, but in some areas it could be more helpful. There are extensive help guides by Google online, mostly ok, but takes a lot of reading to understand and can be tricky at times.

Ok I managed to finally display my photos onto my Nest Hub Max. I have a Google Photos account, and set up one album at first. I am not interested in any sharing at this time. So I ask my Nest Hub max to " Hey Google Change Photo Frame" and it gives me the option to select my album. All well and good. BUT, to get to this point I had to previously set up voice and face matching, via Google Assistant settings
allowing my Google Nest Hub max to respond to my voice and face and my Google profile. If I did not do this, i would NOT have had the option to change photo frame. However in all fairness, before I set all this up, when you ask Google to change photo frame it does respond by asking you to change your settings. I just wish this was explained at first, at a more user friendly way.

Ok, I can display my photos, however you cannot display ONE static photo. It always wants more than one as the system is looking for a slideshow I guess. I experimented with this. I created another album in Google Photos, containing only ONE photo. I then ask my nest Hub Max to display this album. so it displays the photo, but because there is only one photo, it displays it for the time required then unfortunately it then displays other curated photos.
There does not seem any way to just display one static photo.

Yes I am using Fuchsia version - 9.20221010.3.176.

Ok I have another question if I may ?

Regarding the Google Nest doorbell (battery)

I set up "Presence sensing" , so now i have Home or Away, I am still trying to get my head around this set up !. But I get the basic idea that, with geo fencing set up my nest doorbell camera should know if I am away from home. The only problem i have at the moment using the "Google Home App" on my mobile phone is that if there is not much Doorbell camera activity while I am at home, my setting keeps changing from "HOME" to "AWAY", even though I am still at home all weekend. It just seems to change
after a period of time, I suspect it changes to "AWAY" if theer is not much Doorbell camera activity. But I am really not sure ?. Why does my HOME or AWAY settings keep changing back and forward ?.

My main question about the use of the Doorbell camera is that if I am away from my home, CAN I USE MY MOBILE PHONE REMOTELY TO VIEW MY DOORBELL CAMERA live video ?, just as I can use my mobile phone at home to view my doordell camera live video. Obviously, at home my mobile phone will be relying on a WI_FI connection, but when I am way from home then a mobile connection is required. Will it work remotely. Do you understand me ?.

This is of course important for me, for example if I am away on holiday, I can take my mobile phone with me but would still like to view my doorbell camera live video.

Anyway, many thanks and apologies for asking so many questions. At this time I am still learing, and the curve is steep !. I will probably have more questions in the future.

Hey MrTech,

Sweet! Happy to hear that activating your voice and face match on your device resolved the issue and thanks for keeping me in the loop. I understand how nice it would be if  your Nest display can display or show one photo as the screen saver, but this is not available on your Nest Hub Max. We're always looking for ways to improve -- we'll take this as feedback, and we'll gladly pass it along to the team. You can also send feedback using your device by saying, "Hey Google, send feedback." Visit this link for more steps.

In regards to your battery operated Nest camera doorbell, you can have a live view from the Google Home app or go to https://goo.gle/2UZL8VI using your computer.

For the home and away routine, how long have you been using the feature? Please make sure that you allow the home structure to use phone locations. Follow the steps below to know how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Select Presence Sensing > enable Allow this home to use phone locations.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

Well, day 3 with this device. 2/3/2023. Yes it is a very good product. Mostly happy. However I continue to search online for answers.  Within this forum a community specialist suggested the following from a May 2022 post:-

  1. Turn off curation for your private and shared albums.
  2. Change the Personal photo curation setting to Live albums only.
  3. Try deleting all the albums that you've created and create a new one.
  4. Uninstall and reinstall your Google Photos app.

However none ! of the above work for me. My Google photos account is the same as my Nest Hub Max display. I cannot turn off photo curation. There is no ! "Turn Off" selction. Only 2 choices exist within "Photo Frame" area, 1. "All albums " or 2 " LIve albums only".

I selected "Live albums" expexting photos from my Google Photos album to show. Sure yes, after sliding my finger across the screen I can find my personal photo displaying, but after a second, I am back to Google curated photos, and after watching this endless slide show, my photo does not seem to appear in the queue. Very frustrating. Whats the point of having a personal photo curation if it does not work !!. All I want to do is to display my one or two photos of choice on my Nest Hub Max display, just one personal photo that remains there, analogous to having a desktop background on Windows OS. Please Google can you provide an answer to this perplexing issue or fix this bug with a software update to the Nest Hub Max. Thank you.

Thank you Muddi for your replies some of which are helpful. Again can I view my live camera feed from my Google Doorbell (battery) away from my home ? Yes I can view the feed on my computer as per the link you provided. I have set up Presence Sensing basically. Not done much with the routines. Just really activated Presence Sensing and set up the geo-location area around my home. Just want to know that to view my camera feed outside my home on my mobile phone do I  1. - have to view the live feed via the URL link in a browser on my mobile phone ? or 2. - will the Home App allow me to see the live video feed away from home ?. since Presence Sensing should know my mobile phone is away from my home. Just confused with all this Presence Sensing stuff. So can you explain to me in simple terms how to view my doorbell camera feed away from my home, on my mobile phone ?.

Hey MrTech,

To answer your question, you can view your doorbell camera feed from the Google Home app on your phone even if you are away from home. The web link that I've shared can be used on Chrome browser on your computer or laptop.

Hope this helps.

Again many thanks for your continued support, and for answering my questions. Ok, just to clarify your last reply. You say I can view my doorbell camera from the Google Home app on my mobile phone even if I am away from home. How do I do this within the app itself ?.  ( Not using the web link, which is in itself is very good if I choose to view my doorbell camera from say, my desktop computer  ) So to ask again,  you are saying I can use the Google Home app ?, when I am away from home, to view my doorbell camera without using the web link. Can you please explain in simple terms how I can do this when I open the app away frpm home ?.

Hey MrTech,

Sorry for the delays. To stream your camera on the Google Home app, you have to make sure first that you have an internet connection by turning on the mobile data on your phone. Once done, open the Google Home app, then tap your Nest camera to stream.

Hope this helps.

Apologies for my delay in replying to you. Yes thank you very much for your continued support. Ok I will endeavour to try the above solution on my mobile phone once I am away from home by making sure I turn on mobile data to get an internet connection. I will reply to you once I confirm this and it works for me.  One hopefully last question. I was confused by the settings, within the Home app, that I need to set up an "Away" or "Home" setting. I did this but I did not bother with too much routines. But really I dont fully understand why I must have a "Home" or "Away" setup ?. I only did this because I thought I was required to do this so I could view my doorbell camera feed remotely from my home. i.e the Home app needs to know if i was away from home. Secondly if my doorbell camera does not report much activity my "Home" setting keeps flipping to "Away" even though I may be at home all day. Is there an explanation for these settings ? and, must I set up "Home " and "Away" ?. Are they arbitrary settings ?.  Do I need these settings ?.

Hey MrTech,

Sorry for the delays. The Home and Away routine is optional. You can disable and enable it if needed. Just remove the actions and it will disabled the feature.

Apologies, but can you provide clear steps on how to disable Home and Away. How to remove the actions. I cannot seem to find this in my Home App. I can see settings. But not sure if that is the corrrect area ?. I click on Routines from the Home App main screen, It shows me Home and Away choices. For example, if I open Home I can only see a Save option. I cannot find any Disable option. I f I open Away, its the same, I only see a Save option. Apologies I suspect I am looking in the wrong area.  I tried looking in Settings and selcted Presence sensing, but I think this is the wring area ?. I am totally confused now. Would appreciate some simple steps where to disable Home and Away. And of course how to set them up later if I need them. May I ask what is the purpose of Home and Away ?.

Hey MrTech,

A home and away routine is a feature of the Google Home app available to customers with Nest devices and services with a Google Account. When turned on or activated, it can control your smart devices with your preferred settings when you leave and return home. For example, you want your lights turned off when you leave the house, or you want it to be automatically turned on when you arrive. To learn more about the feature, please visit this link.

You are in the right settings to disable the home and away routine. You just have to make sure that you delete or remove the actions if you don't want to use the feature.

Hope that helps.
