Google Nest Mini Sleep command

JohnMcGeough
Community Member

Up until the last couple of days I could instruct my mini nest to “sleep in 20 minutes” and 20 minutes later is would stop. But now it although it acknowledges the command, it keeps on playing after the time period. I have tried saying “stop in 20 minutes”  as well as specifying an actual time, but all to no avail. I have two speakers, and they both are doing the same.
Does anyone know what has changed?

Here’s what support is saying

We have been made aware of reported issues with the Sleep Timer. We’re looking into possible solutions. For the meantime, we would like you to send a feedback about this issue with the steps provided below.

1. Turn on device usage data and crash reports:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Select the device card to share feedback about.
  • At the top-right, select Settings and then Recognition and sharing.
  • Turn on Send [device model] device usage and crash reports to Google. (Example: Send Google Home device usage and crash reports to Google.)
    • Note: For iOS devices, turn on Send device usage and crash reports.

2. Reproduce the issue (Try setting a sleep timer). After the issue occurred, send feedback from the speaker device via voice command (OK Google, send feedback) then say the keywords "GHT3 sleep timer not working".

Most topics on this forum have 30-40 views and a few comments. This topic however has over 4000 views and over 200 comments. It doesn't take a scientist to realise that there is a major issue with the sleep timer. I can't understand how its taking a company like Google, so long to rectify 'their' fault.

Google engineers: please fix the sleep timer bug!

I’ve had the same problem with sleep commands since around July/August. Did the workaround mentioned in a different thread by adding a timer, worked fine for 2 weeks or so but now it doesn’t & sleep sounds play continuously until manually turned off!!!!

They are not going to bother fixing sleep timer but concerned only with pushing their sales of these google speakers, bunch of crooks.

I had both Alexa and Google in my home, and for about a year now I've been getting more, and more frustrated with Google.  This really is the last straw, and I took great satisfaction in destroying all 5 devices today.  I only use Alexa now, and I'm way, way happier.  I'm also happy to share this with my 8.6k followers on LinkedIn too!

After testing both systems for over two years, Alexa is by far the superior product. Which is disappointing as I had hoped Google would be better.

I've been waking up in the night due to the radio playing thinking I have not set a timer, when looking at the history says I have been setting one but the assistant doesn't turn off.

Google have turned a useful but of kit into a brick.

I have a workaround for the use case of listening to music whilst going to sleep, actually, my wife's idea. This may not work for all, but may help some. I have created a playlist on Spotify, which is 45 mins long of appropriate sleep tracks and ask Google to play that playlist. Google will just stop playing at the end of the playlist. Key action is to ensure that Auto-Play for Other Devices is turned OFF in your Spotify account, or after the playlist, Spotify will start to play other similar tracks and will not stop. It's not ideal, but helps us and I hope some others.

I purchased a nest doorbell a few weeks ago and Google now want me to pay them £5 a month for Nest Aware. Until they fix the issue with the sleep timer on the nest hub, they're not getting any more money out of me. I've had to resort to using my old Amazon Dot to listen to the radio in bed and using the 'SLEEP TIMER' that works!

Bassale28

SOLVED: Just switched to a new 5th generation Alexa Echo Dot. Bought it for $28 on Amazon and it included a smart light bulb. Sleep timer works flawlessly and it has much better sound being the latest technology.

I came up with a solution. I plug my google speaker into an old mechanical timer switched plug set to turn off at midnight and back on at 7am. That way, I can tell it to play the radio when I go to bed, and it will turn off at midnight.

1970s tech beats modern google for functionality.

Same here. The sleep timer stopped working a few weeks ago. Maybe a coincidence, but didn't they just release an updated home app? Something very similar happened several years ago and it took months to fix it. I reported it via the feedback functionality.

Hi,

One of the things that still worked on my minis was that I could ask 'play some REM for 30 minutes' and it would respond 'here is a spotify station featuring REM. Master bedroom speaker (or whatever speaker is asked) will stop playing after 30 (or whatever period asked).

That has stopped working now. I have tried both the bedroom speaker where the issue first revealed itself and on my kitchen speaker.

Google mucked this up early 2021 I seem to recall, might have even been the year before?

Can you please at least fix this issue, as all the requests are centralised, are they not?

Also it appears you cannot play music on more than one speaker at a time? When I was trying to test with the living oom speaker and the kitchen speaker was playing, the LR speaker just said it would do it on the kitchen speaker?

Hi there,

This has been reported to the Google Nest team and is being investigated. I will merge this thread with another so that any further updates can easily be shared with all users.

I've always used the Nest mini to turn off after 15 minutes before I start to sleep and during the last few days it hasn't stopped and I wake up in the middle of the night and it is still playing and I have to turn off manually tapping the device.

think that was some bug after the last release so should be fixed easily already see someone else reported in play store so it happens to more users.

Hi @jmap42591
Unfortunately timer delays such as this stopped working on all google nest audio devices weeks ago, possibly after the recent firmware update. It has been reported hundreds of times and there are many, many threads about it. Google say they are aware of the bug and a fix is awaited in the future at some date. As to when, nobody knows.

In the mean time the nearest thing that can be done is not a solution so not perfect but a kind of temporary workaround as follows.

Create a Routine on the Google Home app with a single action command of 'Stop Playing'. Additionally create a starter on that routine for when you want the routine to action of a set time of day, e.g. for instance at 23:00 or of course whatever time would be more suitable. Then the music or sleep sounds will stop when the routine activates at that set time every day or night. Not perfect but the best you can do until this very annoying bug is fixed.

Unfortunately depending which community mod replies there seems to be two answers.  Either "its being looked at" or "this is now totally normal behaviour" and despite weeks (probably now months) of people complaining about this all that happens is threads get merged, making them impossible to follow and then locked so no one can reply.

If only Google techs were as diligent about fixing problems as the moderators are about closing/merging/locking conversation threads.

I think that there are two different questions going on here. One about the sleep sounds function, which they have deliberately turned the timer off on, and the general media sleep timer which they appear to have broken when they switched the first thing off.

@zombiesaaargh

There's lots of users reporting that the media sleep timers are working again so please test your devices and let us know if you still have issues.

Mime is working now thanks.

My Nest Mini are functioning as normal now, but my Nest Hubs have lost the ability to play BBC radio stations, and probably some other services as well. I say the exact same command "Play BBC Radio 1" to all of my devices, and the Nest Hubs just do a Google search.

Could you please start a new forum post about the other issues, thanks 👍

Sleep timers

You can set a sleep timer to turn off music that plays on your speaker or display. You can set one sleep timer per device.

To do this: Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google," then:
Set a sleep timer“Set a sleep timer for 30 minutes”
“Set a sleep timer at 9:30”

Above still isn't working on my Nest Hub, not even after resetting the thing.

And it appears I am not the only one with the problem which lasts several months now.

So I have disconnected the Google Nest Hub and replaced it with my iPhone that allows to set a sleeptimer easily and I can trust will stop the radio as I fall asleep.

Getting so annoid by this, I am also considering buying a Homepod.

Ah - seems I can actually post a reply for a change!
I used to say 'sleep 10 mins' and the Google Home would switch off after 10 mins. Then it stopped working and I had to say "stop after 10 mins" and that worked for a while, until a few weeks ago I was woken in the middle of the night and the music was still playing..

Please Google - let's have some clarity on what's going on and even better a fix..

(Please don't do what you have a tendency to do and just break useful stuff - e.g. Google Assistant Routines on IFTTT)

Mine appears fixed from this morning! I tested it not expecting anything on my Lenovo smart clock and it worked with a five minute and 60 minutes sleep timer. I am happy again haha.

It appears to have worked last night! Fingers crossed for tonight!

Mine is working now, thanks.

Everything is perfect on both of my Nest Mini, but now neither of my Nest hubs will play Radio services like the BBC, they only seem to respond if I specifically ask them to play something on Spotify.

If I say OK Google, play BBC Radio 1 the Nest Hubs say "I don't understand" and then bring me up a google search for BBC Radio 1.
