Google Nest Mini gen 2 keeps saying "Sorry, I can't change the volume from this device"

Suzique
Community Member

Everything has been working fine for ages, now I'm asking Google to change the volume and it says...
"sorry, I can't change the volume on this device".
I've gone through my Google Home settings and I can adjust the volume within that.  I can also adjust the volume when I tap on the speaker....but it won't obey commands.
It is set up in Stereo with another Nest Mini....and that works fine.
If I ask other things, eg time, weather...it's fine.  If I ask it to turn on/off the light...it's fine.

I know that most of you will have already seen our Community's Blog post about the speaker volume here Upcoming Speaker Group changes - Google Nest Community

I will check to see if we can get this link put near the top or pinned so everybody is informed.

Updated: directed to select as solution and that is the only way to keep it at the top.

Like others of you, I have contacted Google support via a chat. This is what they said: "The team is already aware of this behavior where controlling the volume of speaker pairs via Assistant voice commands stopped working. Engineers are currently investigating and working on a fix."

The lady in the chat also asked me to send feedback for the engineers. Maybe it is an idea that everyone sends them their feedback as well. This may help to get a fix soon. Just say "OK Google, send feedback. Unable to control volume via voice"

I'm having the same issue, plus an additional of when I tell it to resume playback, it tries to resume playback on my Android TV, instead of the speakers. It's so annoying.

I have un plugged all my minis have reset them, have re set to factory settings have reinstalled on another phone and nothing has changed, Google are doing Sweet F A about it, looks like Google attitude is, IVE GOT YOUR MONEY SO TOUGH **bleep**.

if the problem is with google, resetting your devices will do nothing to help. We just have to wait for them to fix the issue

Suzique,

Nicely put, and it’s not getting better , now impacting my groups as well as my stereo pairs.

And while it is annoying, the seeming lack of any formal response or acknowledgement from  Google is, simply, disgraceful if not down right rude.

Maybe its just difficult and/or everyone has been on holiday …

How do we best report errors to Google? the Google Nest Community isn’t the best place to log errors and specific details about each of our problems and unique software, hardware and setups.

Now its changing the volume of only the speaker listening rather than the whole group. And if i ask it to change the volume of the speaker group it gives that same bs line about not being able to do it yet.

Fix up google, one of the biggest companies in the world but seem to do everything halfassed. Always been a big supporter but ur laziness to be number one in the game is really putting me off.

I've made another video where I've recorded my voice saying: OK Google, Tell me what instruction I need to tell you, in order to change the volume. Google telling me: To control the volume, say "volume up" or "volume down"..  www.linkedin.com/posts/keithglennmarais_ok-google-send-feedback-thank-you-for-your-activity-########...

Hi All!

Thanks to community member @FixSpkrPairVol  for linking me to this thread. (was away from the Community for a few weeks). OOF lots of you with this issue and so frustrating to you all.

I've escalated this to our Community team.  They have let me know there is a known issue (obviously, right?!) with adjusting the speaker pair volume. They are currently "aware and investigating" and the workaround is to use the Google Home app for volume control.  Not ideal for sure and hoping they can get a fix out soon.

Jill

@JillG Thank you for responding here. Though you're not offering a fix, a bit of acknowledgement goes a long way 😉

We're all hoping for a proper fix (very) soon

Happy holidays

Absolutely and I WISH I could fix it for all of you!  I will keep an eye on the escalation and post any info I can here.

Hi Jill,

There is also another issue with the speakers. Every time I tell it to resume playback, it insists on trying to resume playback on my Android TV, instead of the Nest Speakers. Could you also see if there's a fix for this issue too?

Thanks!

Not sure but suggest you make a whole new thread about that issue. Double check your default speaker settings too.  I will check in on your new thread🙂

If I've been watching the TV and then stop and start streaming music, mine will ask me if I want to play on TV.....not sure if that is the same thing? But I just say NO and it defaults to my normal set up.

Thanks for the acknowledgement. Another bug is that any automatic adjustments thought routines are also failing with the same error - and these are speakers that are not in pairs and the adjustment is for an individual speaker only, i.e. not a group.

Could you make them aware of this too please?

New twist: today I can use voice command on a Google audio for volume up or down, but on the app it claims there is no volume, 0%, so changing it does nothing. Whereas on a Google home, paired playing the same stuff, voice command for volume does not work, but the app volume slider does. So it’s either or but not both on different speakers all playing paired at the same time

hi @JillG has any progress been made on this issue?

Nothing new unfortunately. The info I have is from the Google Assistant Community Manager, "This issue is already escalated and the concerned team is looking into it".

No updates beyond what they've relayed to me.

I now notice that sometimes it works for a bit and then it stops again, I really only use that command with Spotify mainly

Suzique

Very similar for me when streaming from I heart Radio app. Works for a while and then might not. When I stop streaming, the volume commands work as normal.  Mine has been ok the last few days 🤞🤞🤞

I just discovered this issue recently on my device as well. I had a hell of a time and a lot of issues even getting my minis set up originally and had to get help so I'm too scared to factory reset things 😭 hoping another solution is found soon or this is addressed by Google.

I am sure a permanent fix will come. My speaker pair was doing this  but it is ok now so something is happening.

Hi @MmeMercury

No point in doing a factory reset. This will fix the problem for a time, but it will go wrong again you can be certain. I've factory reset and this worked but only for a while. Some things work temporarily, but it will error again later. Things like saying 'hey google play (whatever such as spotify, radio etc) on this device' sometimes works for a while, or 'hey google transfer to living room etc' then back again sometimes works but it will eventually go wrong again. All we can really do is hope that google do finally decide to do something about this. Here's hoping.

I'm convinced that all of these ongoing problems will be fixed only when Google finally realizes that their best course of action is to either 1) pay Sonos to license the patented technology that they had been openly profiting from for years before losing the recent court decision, or 2) buy Sonos. Until then, their engineers are stuck trying to heed upper management's orders to replicate the functionality that formerly made use of the Sonos patents by rewriting all the relevant code without infringing on those patents --- a task that is virtually impossible. As a retired commercial software developer myself, I feel sorry for them (the engineers).

Why does this have anything to do with sonos? I only have google speakers, and i have this issue. No sonos.

Sonos owns the technology.  Google is not allowed to use it. Unless they strike a licensing deal

For some reason the thread number is being covered with ###. Copy/paste & replace ### with 1 4 0 6 6 2 5 0 9 removing spaces. I can't even post the thread number without adding spaces. Wth

Anyway... The Google Assistant support forum is watching this thread 😉

Does it not seem odd that for 2+ weeks this issue is all over Assistant & Nest support forums, Reddit /googleassistant & /googlehome, covered on 9to5 Google... Yet, the only response has been from folks like @JillG a Product Expert. No official acknowledgement or response from Google whatsoever. Clearly folks beyond the product team(s) are well aware by now.

Come on Google. Just own it.

All Google is accomplishing by failing to offer an official response is angering it's customers and embarrassing itself from the Internet to the dinner table.

It'll be ok Google, just throw folks a bone  😉

That is fair.

I've asked our Community Specialists from Google to reply to you all here about this escalated issue with the volume control.

They may have nothing to add to the discussion other than support is aware and looking into the issue but I agree that an official response would be helpful.

Wow, cant believe this is heading into the third week with no official response or fix for a critical bug in one of their devices. Makes you wonder how crappy their other products must be.

Very frustrating especially at this time of the year when we are hosting social gatherings.  Is a real annoyance to manually get up from the Dinner table repeatedly to manually adjust the speaker settings.  We have 5 in the house as part of our Home Group.

Same issue here. Contacted Google Home support. They acknowledged that there is a bug and their internal team is working on fixing it.
