Google nest mini 2

stephanschop
Community Member

I have my google nest mini 2. First I had trouble with wifi connection. My connection was randomly dropping, and I had to factory reset to make it work again.

Now I have moved this device closer to the router to see if stays stable, but it disconnects randomly from the google home app. Wich needs a factory setup as well.

Very disapointing any help would be nice!

Hi stephanschop,

I’m sorry to hear about the trouble you are experiencing with your Google Nest Mini device. Let’s further look into it. A few questions: are you using a dual-band router? On which band is your Google Nest Mini device connected? Do you have other Google Nest speakers/displays aside from this? What is the verbal response you are getting from your Google Nest Mini whenever it drops connection to your Wi-Fi? I’ll look forward to your response.

Regards,
Alex

Dear Alex, I have connected my nest mini only to the 2.4 ghz band. The wifi issue is seperate from the problem with the google home app.

Within the google home app the device resets. I need the setup the device again, and within days or less the device resets itself again. It comes as a new device to setup within the google home app. The device itself tells to connect again within the google home app.

I have version 3.10.1.6 of the google home app

Hi there,

Thanks for providing those details. Have you tried connecting your Google Nest Mini to the 5 GHz band?

Try these steps:

  • Configure your router settings.
    • Change the DNS addresses to 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
    • If IPv6 is enabled, try disabling it in the meantime.
  • Reboot the router, your phone, and your Google Nest Mini.
  • Uninstall and reinstall the Google Home app.
  • Monitor.

Best,
Alex

Dear Alex,

I have tried all the above steps. Connected the chrome device specific to the 5ghz connection.

Yet I recieve the message:'I can not find your wifi network. Maybe you can check your modem or router connection.'

Hello stephanschop,

We appreciate your efforts in taking all those steps. Do you have another phone or tablet/iPad you can try to use just for the initial set-up? Check if using another setup device will exhibit the same behavior. If yes, try to connect Google Nest Mini to a temporary hotspot:

  • In order to complete the setup for your Google Nest Mini with the use of a mobile hotspot, you need to have two setup devices.
    • The first phone will behave as the router. Turn on its data and hotspot.
    • The second device is the setup device. Connect it to the hotspot connection.
  • Factory reset your Google Nest Mini once more.
  • Using the second setup device, open the Google Home app > Follow the set-up instructions > Choose the hotspot network on the “Connect to WiFi” page.

If Google Nest Mini connects to the hotspot just fine, the issue is likely with the internet/router. There may be some changes to its settings after you do a reset. To further isolate it, continue to the next steps:

  • While the phone is connected to the hotspot, open the Google Home app > Devices > Tap on Google Nest Mini > Settings > Device information > WiFi > Forget WiFi.
  • Connect the setup device to your home WiFi > Do the setup steps again and try connecting to your WiFi.

Kind regards,
Alex

Dear Alex, I have tried different modems/wifi connections, and tried to connect from a diffrent phone. With the same result the device losing wifi connection. The problem is clearly within the device itself. When do you expect an firmware upgrade for this device, as there are clearly more people with the same problem. Or what else can you offer? Thanks Stephan

I had this problem with new nest mini 2nd Gen. Infuriating as old one worked fine and a Nest worked fine. Both rock solid. I read about modem issues but wasn't convinced, I thought it was a design fault with 2nd Gen device. But I changed broadband supplier to Plusnet and the problem magically went away. The Plusnet router didn't look like a particularly impressive piece of kit. However I changed broadband supplier and the problem has reappeared. So it is definitely a router issue but it must also be a design fault with 2nd Gen devices. You would have thought Google would be good at connectivity. Apparently not. They should refund everybody with 2nd Gen device.

Hey BykerBob, Thanks for your input! I dont't think it is router related for myself. As I tried connecting directly to my modem, but it could be.

If you have 2nd Gen Nest Mini I would say definitely router/design fault. As I said my other Google speakers rock solid, just 2nd Gen has an issue. Issue went away when I switched to Plusnet but then returned when I saw switched to Sky. The Plusnet router was their Hub One so there will be a default setting in that device that is 2nd Gen friendly. I bought a third party router hoping that would solve it but no. These things should be plug and play at the end of the day You shouldn't have to go to advanced settings or go through elaborate reboot sequences. 2nd Gen Nest Mini is a piece of junk.

I agree thanks! I also bought a xiaomi smart speaker recently, wich had one time disconnect from my google home. So I don't feel completely stable with these products. But I will monitore if my xiaomi keeps stable in the future.

When I say Google speakers I meant Google Assistants of course. My 2nd Gen Nest Mini stays in contact for a couple of days then drops out. I might try to determine if the time to dropping out is constant or if occurs at a certain time (e.g in the middle of the night when there could be a firmware update going on). Also trying some basic alterations in my third party router. Not hopeful though.

Let me know if you found anything 🙂

@Juni I also have another product (xiaomi smart speaker)  that lost connection with my wifi same problem, ""Cannot find your wifi network". When I look in the home app, I can set them up again as new. While recieving the message "The device was previously setup as a diffrent user please factory reset the device". Can we look in this deeper as the problem remains!

Is it possible to send out logging to dive deeper with this?

careful said, the issue with the wifi seems fixed as I have disabled my gastnetwork.

With the Nest mini the issue that remains it will go offline/ disconnect within the google home app.

I can reconnect by setting it up as new, without factory reset.
