How to remove a device without gear icon

Agentblue
Community Member

I recently moved, when I did my device went offline. Now at my new home I have factory reset it and it is working fine. However now in the home app I see the old device, it says it's offline so I don't see the gear icon to remove it. Any tips or ideas to get this thing removed?

Try these steps:

  • Open the Google Home app.
  • Tap Settings.
  • Tap Rooms and groups.
  • Tap the room the device was assigned to.
  • Tap the device.
  • Tap Remove device.

If those steps don't work, try these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Tap your photo or initials at the top right.
  3. Tap Assistant settings.
  4. Tap Devices.
  5. Tap the device.
  6. Tap Unlink this device.

Ah the old ghost device - try David Kings steps, however I had this same issue a few years ago and the device you want to remove most likely will not have the "Remove Device"  "unlink Device"option. The only way I got rid of mine was to use my old phone with an old version of the GH app - that version allowed the deleting of old ghost devices. Once I removed the device I just updated to GH app to the current version. Good luck

Hey folks,

davidking and 78912, we appreciate the insights!

Agentblue, if the issue persists. Try creating a new home and move your Google Home or Google Nest speaker into it. Clearing the cache and data then reinstalling your Google Home app might help too.

Keep us updated!

Best,

Alex

Hi @78912! Do you remember what version of the Home App that allowed the deleting of an "dead" device. I recently cleared the Built-in cast data from one of my android TV's and now there's two TV's with the same name, One "dead" without the gear icon that I can't delete and one thats working. Does @Muddi or any of your colleagues know what version this is?

If i recall correctly I think it was  version 2.10.1.13, from April 19, 2019.

Thanks! 🙂

Aaand it worked! Thanks again @78912 🙂 Much easier way then to create a new home.
