Lights on mini constantly pulsing

richardtc007
Community Member

Over the past 2 weeks I've noticed that the Google Home Minis  (5 of them) throughout my house frequently have four pulsing white lights. This is not the result of someone saying anything remotely close to "Hey Google" or "Ok Google" and it is not the result of an errant broadcast.

I've noticed that it even happens when I'm the only one home and haven't said a word.

I've done the whole unplug and reset routine. Why are they all suddenly listening???

I've found that when pulsating, the speakers get unresponsive to voice prompts, same with yours?

They still require a Hey or OK prompt, but they do respond.

Hello everyone,

Thanks for sharing details about the issue here. I know how strange it is when the LED lights on your Google Home Mini are constantly pulsing. To confirm, do the lights flash and then fade or it slowly pulses? Did you set up an alarm or timer? Is the device still functional? What is the firmware version of your Home Mini?

Also, to help us get a better picture of what's happening, do you mind sharing a video?

Cheers,

Muddi

Sure thing!

All the minis in the house are slowly pulsing.  We have no timers or reminders active that we are aware of.  If I say "Hey Google" and then "Nevermind" on any of the minis, the lights do go back to normal for a time.  But at some point they all come back on when I'm not looking.  I've also noticed I cannot set the volume of them using the Google Home app.  It just goes back to showing a volume of "0" in the app, but the volume of the mini never changes.   The device otherwise functions as normal.

System Firmware version: 356012

Cast firmware: 1.56.356012

I'll try to get a video later today.

Mine are now doing this too

Ours have been doing this for about a month now.

Mine are slowly pulsing continuously. We don't always catch them doing it but we notice most at night when we turn the lights off. If we unplug and plug back in, the pulsing stops. Additionally if we ask "Hey Google what are you doing?" Or "Hey Google  what's up"  It gives the generic response. We have no timers, alarms or reminders set at the time

Mine are acting identically to swogdog's, and firmware versions are the same.  Slow pulsing of the lights, all at the same time (not chasing), behavior stops after saying "hey Google" then "cancel" or "nevermind".  I don't notice during the day, but the one in my bedroom is like that every night.

Hey folks,

I appreciate all the information. To cover all bases, is continued conversation enabled on your speakers? If yes, please try to disable it for the meantime and let see if your device will have the same behavior. Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Make sure that your mobile device is connected to the same WiFi or linked to the same account as the speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. At the top right corner of the screen, tap your account icon.
  4. Verify that the Google Account shown is the one linked to your Google Home or Google Nest device. To switch accounts, tap another account or Add another account.
  5. Then tap Assistant Settings > Continued Conversation.
  6. Turn the slider to Off.

Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Muddi

FYI, getting to the screen to make that change is different in the current version of the Home app.  I just checked, and Continued Conversation is already off for everything.

Turning off "continued conversation" made no difference

Same here.

I tried something else on one of my devices.  I removed it from the home, then did a factory reset, then re-added to my home.  So far it is behaving fine.  I did not reset any other devices, and they still have the pulsing issue.  I'll update again after some time and let everyone know if the issue comes back for the reset device.

Factory reset did not fix it.

Factory reset did not fix ours either. We tried removing every Mini and reinstalling too.

I also tried a full factory reset. It made no difference. The issue lies in the Home app update that occurred a few weeks back. Google screwed something up.

Turning off continued conversation was the first thing I tried a couple weeks ago. I've since toggled it on and off too based on another users suggestion. No change. Google Home support is telling us we have to abandone our current Google accounts and create a new Gmail account and use it, reset the devices, to remedy this issue. I will not be doing this. I'll throw the speakers out first. This is not a solution.

I agree. Maybe time to switch to Alexa

Same problem. USA.

Same issue on all my 6 home mini speakers and 2 home surrender

Can I ask why we can bo longer broadcast on the app?

I use the app alot while out if people in the household don't answer the phone but since the update there's no longer a broadcast button.

  • Belgium: they start blinking ALL... Not just one... ALL of them. Same blinking like timer issue but no timers here...  I need to talk loader to get the "hey google" command going. Need a fix or alexa is coming 2 kick some google home buts

The 4 lights pulse about every 3/4 of a second. No alarms set. Devices are still functional.  Here is a video of three of my devices right after a broadcast, however I am still not assuming it only happens during a broadcast. This is just the most consistent way to reproduce the issue. See videos here.

I am having this same issue. Began two weeks ago.  There are no notifications/reminders.  If i use the broadcast command for example, half my speakers will have 4 pulsing white lights that remain on indefinitely or until another “hey google” command is issued.  It is concerning because it seems like the device is stuck listening.

After an announcement or broadcast, all devices slowly pulse until the units are reset.

Hi SirRaath,

To confirm, have you tried to disable the continued conversation on your device? Also, what country are you located in?

Cheers,

Muddi

How do you "disable the continued conversation" on a device? I'm in the US.

FYI - I did find reports of this in other forums that seem to tie this to doing a broadcast. After the broadcast, the lights stay pulsing on speakers even after the broadcast is complete. If that's the case, sounds like a bug.

I finally found the Continued Conversation setting. It is not enabled.

Hello,

I have google home speaker which for whatever reason every day goes into mode of blinking colored lights like it's happening after you say "Ok google". It stays like that indefinetely. Unplugging and plugging back resolves the issue untill next day. Device was already factory reset.

Same here. It's like it's listening to us.

Same here. I have many and they are all doing it. Maybe a bug in an update?

Yes, I concur. They messed something up in the big update.

Same here!  Happens after I broadcast.

Same. For the last two weeks they are almost always blinking like it’s listening. I have 7 total in my house. Sometimes it stops when I say Ok Google Cancel, but then it’s back at it again a few minutes later. It’s obviously not an issue with one since they are all doing it.

When tell Google to "cancel" it replies, "Ok, cancelling Android TV". And my wife yells at me 😄.

Mine does the same! If I tell Google "stop" to try to stop the incessant flashing of lights, it turns off the downstairs TV or the music on another mini in another room. This flashing issue has been going on for over a month.

Yes, I get the same with all my mini speakers, triggered by a broadcast command. Def a bug introduced. So, now we are in for a long wait while the Devs fix this.

This began happening to me recently also.  I have a scheduled routine that broadcasts a message every evening, and then my minis are flashing. On my Hub and Hub Max, the white screen with the animation appears, and keeps going until I manually stop it.  So far it only happens after a broadcast, but frustrating to have to go around to each device to stop it.
