Live Radio stations on Google Nest Hub stopped working

Steffodino
Community Member

My issue is that the live radio stations in Romania stopped working since Wednesday (April 9, 2025) on Google Nest Hub 2.

I did the following steps to troubleshoot:

1. upon checking the radio service in the Google Home app (on iOS 18.4), I noticed that the Radio category under Settings/Services is not present as it is described in this support link. I was using TuneIn for radio streaming.

2. I tried opening the same live radio streams from another iOS app (Simple Radio, which has Chromecast support) in Google Nest, but the result was the same as when using TuneIn: the app is opened, but the stream is not played.

3. The live radio stations can be played on the phone (iPhone 15 Pro Max) in either TuneIn or Simple Radio.

4. As advised in another post, I sent the feedback.

5. The firmware update for Google Nest is on auto-update.

6. I tried from Google Assistant app, via routines (set up a routine for 7 AM or associated a phrase). Both of these involve the action "play radio", and as indicated in point #1, radio services are missing in Google Home app.

This is extremely frustrating. Please investigate and advise.

This is still broken for some stations, for instance, BBC works fine, but stations that use global player, don't work,  they appear to stream, and then just display the global player skin and eventually time out.

I have the same issue. I can’t play my local NPR station. I have to ask for it in 17 different ways and sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn’t. If I ask for it by call sign sometimes it plays a different radio station entirely. When I go into the Google Home app, I see that there is no longer an option to choose my preferred radio service. I used to have several services set as my preference. They are all gone now . The only option that is there now is SiriusXM, which requires a paid subscription and I don’t have that. Something is wrong. Where did you submit feedback or report  the bug?

Experiencing a similar issue here - streaming US radio station KEXP on Nest Hub Max does not work. Hangs at the TuneIn welcome screen, then eventually times out and closes.

KEXP radio plays fine on other assistants, via TuneIn or otherwise. I've tried a number of reboots/updates, including restarting modem/router to get a new public IP (I'm in Canada and this issue started for me almost 2 weeks ago).

Same in WA. Can’t get it to work. It’s extremely frustrating. Audacy & Tunein won’t play KEXP for me either. Ridiculous.

Thanks everyone responding so far.

Here's the today's update: playing local stations on TuneIn radio was restored after the last update of Google Home app on iOS only via a routine set it as an alarm.

But it still doesn't work if I stop the radio playing and then ask normally "play Rock FM Romania" on TuneIn. Also, it doesn't work to Chromecast streaming from TuneIn or SimpleRadio to Google Nest.

Also, the radio service still doesn't appear under Settings > Services menu of Google Home app.

Also have exact same issue in the UK. Global

player and Rayo have just stopped working, and there is no “Radio” option in the services menu on the app settings.

Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out to the community! I understand the live radio stations stopped working on your Google Nest Hub device. I appreciate all the troubleshooting steps you've performed to get your live radio stations working again. I know how frustrating it might be when a feature doesn't work as expected. I'm here to help! To isolate the cause of the inconvenience, I'd like to ask the following questions:

  • Does the inconvenience occur only when playing live radio stations?
  • What happens during other activities, like playing music?
  • Is your Google Home app updated? Please check out the following link to update it: Update the Google Home app
  • Is there an error message when trying to play a radio station?
  • Is the Google Nest Hub part of a speaker group that includes a display or 3P (third-party) speaker?
  • Can you manually cast the radio station from the app to the display?
  • Have you tried using a different mobile device to unlink and relink the radio service app?

For now, I'd like to recommend checking the following steps:

  • Check the TuneIn App is up to date.
  • Ensure your mobile device or tablet is:
    - Connected to the same Wi-Fi.
    - Linked to the same account as your Chromecast, speaker, or display.
  • Say "Ok Google" or "Hey Google", then:
    - “Send feedback”
-Include the keyword: “GHT3 unable to stream <RTE radio station> from TuneIn”
  • Please provide a video clip capturing the inconvenience.

Please keep me posted. I look forward to your response.

Best regards,
Juan

how exactly would you include a video clip to an audio message?

Hi Juan,
This forum isn't allowing me to upload videos but I've attached an mp4 example here. It ends with the TuneIn welcome screen (after retrieving the feed from https://feed.tunein.com and displaying the correct current show, DJ name, etc.) but then times out and closes after about 30 secs.

Thank you for following up!

This is exactly what is happening to me in the UK, with both Rayo and Global Player

It's been 7 days. Is there an update based upon user response?

Hi Juan,

Is there any update from Google on this? I used this function every day, very frustrating that it isn’t working

Thanks, Juan. That's exactly what I did, to no avail.

Been listening to radio station from Singapore but recently unable to hear any. Even my routine does not work. Able to hear the radio station on my phone but once cast, unable to stream it and the display kept flickering until I stop cast.

Same problem for me. Tunein stopped playing on my Nest Hub... it shows it's on and the Tunein screen shows, but no sound. Tunein plays okay on my other Nest speakers.

Same issue here, didn’t play tunein as part of the routine nor when I asked google to play FM radio. The tunein just flickered on the screen and nothing was playing after the Tunein introductory. Any fix on this?

I have 2 Google Nest Hub displays, and neither of them can play radio stations in Singapore. I have tried playing songs from Australian and American radio stations using TuneIn, and they play perfectly fine.

I also have a pair of the Google Nest Audio too, and weirdly, I can play radio stations from Singapore on them!

This seems to be a problem with the Google Nest Hubs with TuneIn and it's not something that we can fix over at the user's end.

I have had the same issue here in Canada as everyone else. Funny thing is I tried again this morning and still wouldent work. Then I went to a Lenovo speaker connected to my home and ask that it play a speaker group that included the Hub Max and it is working that way.

Same issue in Australia with RadioApp since about 23rd April. Reset device and re-added to my home but to no avail. Also noticed some YouTube music now not playing and screen going black after ads have played successfully.

TuneIn gone here as well, also in Canada Sirius XM listed under radio apps, iHeart streaming works fine but not listed as an option.

Found another thread saying to do a factory reset.. nada.

  • Where are you located? - I am located in the Florida, US
  • What are the devices that are facing this problem? 3 google displays
  • Did you already link the radio service with your device? Yes, I have
  • What steps did you try to solve the situation? I have reset all three devices and updated my google home app

Hi @jakyledad,

Thanks so much for reaching out to this community! I understand the frustration of your Google display not playing NPR or local NPR, especially when something doesn't work the way we expect. I'm here to help you.

Your responses have helped me understand a bit more about what's going on, and I'd like to ask you a few extra questions so I can provide you with the correct troubleshooting steps.

  • Could you provide me with a photo of your Google Displays?
  • What are some voice commands you typically use to listen to NPR?
  • What kind of phone do you use when interacting with your Google Displays?
  • Have you ever had to troubleshoot your Google Displays by removing and then re-adding them in the Google Home app? If so, what was that experience like?

Any additional details you can provide will be helpful.

Best regards,

Eduardo

  • Could you provide me with a photo of your Google Displays? The reply window does not allow me to attach photos
  • What are some voice commands you typically use to listen to NPR? "Hey Google, play NP.R" "HeGooglele, play WUSF."
  • What kind of phone do you use when interacting with your Google Displays?iPhone 13 Pro Max
  • Have you ever had to troubleshoot your Google Displays by removing and re-adding them in the Google Home app? If so, what was that experience like? I have not removed them from the Google Home app. I have three displays, and all three do the same thing.

Nothing here worked for me

either-did all resets with no results!!!

Same here, in Romania, I suspect this has something to do with the licensing of TuneIn, although weirdly enough, it still works flawlessly on the speakers.

On another vein, it could just be there is one release that messed up some functionality related to only radio streaming, as whenever I am trying to cast audio from my phone to the Nest Hub, using obviously another radio streaming app, it just do nothing, while on the mini speakers it works.

I don't think google is going to fix this ever.

I’m having what appears to be the same problem. My nest hub can’t play radio stations from RadioApp, but my nest minis can.

I also control my nest hub with some routines from NodeRed. With those routines, playing normal audio files direct from my network works properly. But playing live streams from my network fails on the nest hub (used to work), but works fine on the nest mini.

I have also noticed with VLC that if I am playing a file I can cast it to the nest hub ok, but if I’m playing a live stream it won’t cast. Once again, this works properly on the nest mini.

So the conclusion I have come to, is that a firmware update has broken its ability to play audio streams.

Confirmed it works fine on Pixel phones, Pixel tablets and speakers.  And now we wait.. LOL

I believe, this confirms the licensing agreement impediment after all.. well I guess Apple does the same so why should Google be different isn't it? 😉

It's about the Google product, for Google provides options for both Android and iOS.

We have pixel phones and still not working for us

There is a strange similarity with how Google silently banned any Spotify podcast to be cast to any nest device (whether hub or mini) by just denying playing it.

The only podcast (episodes) stream that still plays are the one from Google.

This example illustrates clearly a licensing (dis)agreement between the two companies, therefore I believe this too it is a reason for the radio issue.

I guess it is a matter of time until it will be completely blocked on the minis too...

fascinating. i have google home minis and they often will not receive something "cast" to them. i always assumed it was a bug but now i understand! i think it's time we all got together for a big bonfire!

Hi

I am having real issues streaming to global player.

when I ask google to play heart London it brings up global player and heart but then immediately goes back to the Global player screen.

All other stations work apart from Global player.

I have tried turning WiFi off, removing the device and factory reset and nothing works.

many thanks for your help
