Multiple Nest Minis and Spotify family

billdel

Hi

i have nest minis for each of my kids. They are under 12 and are linked to my google account under family link. They each have a family member profile in my Spotify account with their own Spotify login etc.

I am trying to set up their minis so they can play their own music in their rooms. Ideally I would also like them to be recognised on the other google speaker I have in the kitchen so they can access their own playlists there too.

I have searched for answers to this and many suggest going into ‘manage settings’ then google assistant in the family link app under each child. When I do that there is an option to link my child to new devices but if I click that it says something went wrong.
Does anyone have any advice on how I can do this? Right now my own Spotify account is linked to all the speakers and you can imagine the ‘discussions’ that ensure when music stops on one speaker when someone else starts playing.

Thanks!

I'm having an issue where another family member's morning routine wakes them up with my Spotify playlists.  It's not a good fit.

It seems everything about the Spotify and Google Home (Voice Assistant) linkage is buggy.

Hey there,

I understand it can be confusing when you are wanting to have each person be able to control their own Spotify playlists through their own Nest Mini, and I'm happy to help.

The best workaround is to have each member of the family have their own sign in for Google and Spotify so that they can control their own music on their app through their Nest Minis.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Thanks for jumping in, @GarrettDS.  What you've suggested is precisely how I've configured things for my family.

As far as troubleshooting steps I've tried the  following (in order):

  1. Factory reset all Nest Mini and Chromecast devices and then kept them powered off
  2. Signed out of and unistalled all Spotify instances for all family members (mobile, desktop)
  3. Removed Spotify as a provider to Google Home
  4. Unistalled and re-installed Google Home, Google Assistant, Google Search (on devices for which I could not uninstall Google Search I cleared all app cache and data, and then removed the affected Google accounts from the devices before rebooting)
  5. Signed back into affected Google accounts on mobile
  6. Reinstalled and signed back into Spotify (mobile, desktop)
  7. Re-added all Nest Mini devices and Chromecast to the home
  8. Enabled Spotify as primary music provider in Google Home

My Spotify playlists no longer seem to play during  the morning routines of other family members.  Instead, we now hear from the Google Assistant that we should "try again later" many times throughout the day - even for things unrelated to Spotify.    I'm open to any suggestions as to what I may try next to get it sorted.

Hey Garrett

Thanks for the response but it just seems crazy to me. What app and device is my 8 year old supposed to have?? I'm really trying not to set up an old phone for her as she's far too young but it seems to be the only way. I've decided a spotify kids account also doesn't play well with Google speakers as the 10 year old keeps stealing my music whilst I'm listening elsewhere and she tries to play something.

For such big companies I'd expect something like to just work and not be so clunky and in need of workarounds.

Hey there,

Sorry to hear about the frustrations that you're still having with this, I'm happy to help.

It sounds like we are getting into the territory of what would be a Google Assistant issue, so I would suggest visiting our Google Assistant Forum and writing to them there as this is a question that they would be able to help answer.

Please let me know if you have any further questions.

Best regards,

Garrett DS

Hello everyone,

I am attempting to link my daughter's voice and Spotify account to your Google Home account, but it asks me to do so thru the Family Link app. When I do so, however, I get an error asking me to add the person to our Google Home. But I can't, as then it asks me to do it thru Family Link.

Is there anything I'm missing here or something that might be missing when attempting to train her voice on the speaker?

Hey there,
Sorry for the late response, but I wanted to drop in here to help.

I understand that Spotify issues can be confusing but I definitely wanted to stop by and see how I could help.

Just wanted to double check to see if you were still needing help on this? If so, what troubleshooting steps have you tried?

Please let me know.

Best regards,
Garrett DS

No worries! I appreciate any response. 🙂

I am still having issues, as I have tried to train her voice to connect with her Google account. When I have tried however, it asks me to do so with Family Link. But Family Link seems to want me to add her to the home first via Google Home, which it won't let me do.

So,

I have 2 children 10 and 8, the eldest (no.1) has her own for walking to school and so setting her up on our Families Google Home seemed simple. She appears in Familiy Link app and i can see her location and apps usuage etc, our google home speakers also recognise her voice and and so play her music when she asks it to.... I think.

The problem I am having is whilst trying to get the the youngest added to my Spotify family plan (which she is showing up in) Google speakers will not allow her to play music but only tell me I need to link her through the Home app - and then doesnt tell me how to do it.

She has her own email address and also shows up in family Link app although there are no real settings or choices like in the elders account, I think this is because she doesnt have her own phone (only laptop for school work).

I have tried to add members to my household in the Home app but it seems to just search for her device so obviously doesnt work.

I am at a loss.... Spotify is huge and offers a family account, Google is also huge and sent out a free mini with said family account.... so why is it so hard to set up the functions that would be most used by a family with children?? I just want everyone to be able to ask for thier own music to play on thier own playlist without it mixing with everyone elses.... Surely im not the only one who is finding this hard?

Thanks

Steve

Same boat here. I dealt with this a couple years ago and just logging in to see if this has been fixed. So frustrating. When I am playing music in my car on Spotify, one of my kids will ask google to play music at home and it turns my music off. They too have their own Spotify accounts. It’s a constant battle.

It's ridiculous... I don't even know which app / company to start with!
