Nest Audio Speaker Pair Right Speaker stops working when connected through Bluetooth

jbudzinski
Community Member

I added two Nest Audios to my Google Home. These devices were purchased in February 2022 and are configured as follows:

System firmware version

Left: 279716

Right: 279716

Cast firmware version:

Left: 1.54.279716

Right: 1.54.279716

I've created a Speaker Pair from these two devices (Left/Right Stereo Audio). I enabled Bluetooth Pairing on the Speaker Pair and have connected it to my Windows 10 computer for use as desktop audio. I test the Speaker Pair stereo audio on Windows and can hear sound on both Left and Right sides when first connected, but after some time passes- the right side stops playing sound and the left side still works.

The only way I've found to temporarily resolve this is to disconnect the Bluetooth device (Speaker Pair) in Windows and reconnect it, which gives me stereo sound for a short while before the right speaker drops again.

Is this a known issue? I've checked Bluetooth drivers on Windows 10 and verified there are no errors, and I've tried factory resetting the individual speakers, recreating the speaker pair, and also rebooting each individual speaker in the speaker pair. The issue persists.

Thanks in advance.

Also suffer from the same issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hey there,

I think I resolved my own issue. It seems like it was an issue with Windows. I've been testing the fix today and have been good for about 6 hours, which is a record.

What I did is Edit Power Plan --> Change Advanced Power Settings.

In there, I selected Wireless Adapter Settings --> Power Saving Mode --> Setting and changed it from (Low/Medium/High) Power Saving to Maximum Performance. I also did USB settings --> USB selective suspend setting --> Setting: Disabled for good measure. My device is PCIE, but the driver looks like it might represent the Bluetooth as a virtual serial device. I then restarted the Bluetooth Support Service.

I think the power saving may have been causing issues with the connectivity. Not sure why this would only cause issues with one speaker, but like I said- I haven't had any issues yet today which is a huge step forward.

Disregard, just happened for the first time today.

@andrueastman: Sorry to know that you're having the same issue. A few questions - what device are you trying to connect to your speakers via Bluetooth? Does the same thing happen when you're devices are not paired? Also, please share the steps that you've done.

Looking forward to your response.

Cheers,

Hi Muddi,

I am still having the issue. The attempting fix I posted did not resolve the issue. I am still experiencing the playback loss of the right speaker in the speaker pair several times a day. Is this a known issue being tracked by Nest developers?

Thanks for your reply. Hoping to find a solution.

Hi @Muddi , checking in again on this. Could you kindly provide any feedback/assistance you have? As noted above, my attempted fix did not resolve the issue. The issue is still present 3 weeks later.

Thank you.

Hi @Muddi , is it possible to open a ticket with an engineering team regarding this issue?

Hey @Muddi,

I have the exact same situation as @jbudzinski . I have tried with my Windows laptop and also my Wife's Laptop running Ubuntu.

When the devices are not paired, there is no lag in playback between audio and video. However, when paired there is a lag and eventually one speaker stops playing.

I have the exact same problem!
Connecting to the pair with macbook it either works on left side only or has seconds of delay

it is seriously annoying since I bought the second nest just to use it while watching movies and now it is literally useless

I would appreciate a feedback from the engineering team.

Hey folks,

Thanks for coming back to us. To confirm, does the same thing happen when connected to a paired speaker on a different device like a phone or tablet? Also, are you experiencing issues when playing music on paired device via voice command?

Keep us posted.

Hey folks,

My apologies for the delays. To confirm, are you trying to use the paired speakers as an external speaker for your devices? Could you try playing or casting music on paired devices, and check if you have the same issue.

Cheers,

Muddi

It seems that the issue is only while using the pair as stereo Bluetooth speaker.

Until now I had no issues while casting.

Hi @Muddi , I haven't been able to test casting for prolonged periods of time but will do so in the next few days. I will let you know. Thank you.

Hey Dario,

Thanks for the update, and my apologies for the delays. What do you normally play when your speakers are paired? Is it music or you're using it as an external speaker?

@jbudzinski: No worries. I'll continue to monitor this thread so I can see your update.

Keep us posted.

When I cast: music.

When I play over bluetooth, my willing is to play the audio track from video sources (netflix, youtube, and every sources the GoogleTV can play).

I'm really disappointed by the fact that Google did an impressive marketing activity based on the "new pairing mode which you can use to make wireless audio to video system" and it seems that in no way a user can use it with adequate satisfaction.

To recap:

- when playing audio tracks played by GoogleTV the "slave channel" randomly and frequently loses the connection and the audio become mono.

- when playing audio tracks through the TV and videoprojector the delay between audio and video makes it unusable.

No matter what I play!

Hi @Muddi

The issue is not present when I cast via Wi-Fi to the Speaker Pair, but it occurs on many different devices when I connect to the Speaker Pair via Bluetooth Pairing to use the Speaker Pair as a stereo speaker. This seems to narrow it down to a Bluetooth issue based on simple logic.

Hi @Jake , I see Nikki's link to a Google article on how to submit feedback on product satisfaction. I can appreciate that this is available, but those submissions presumably are received en masse by Google every second of every day.

I came here to post the issue and seek resolution since this seems to be a forum to interact with human employees of Google who might be able to escalate the issue until it's resolved. Is that not the case?

Hey @Jake and @Mlabrador ,

I have posted a questions for you in my previous replies. Are you still able to assist and ensure that I am good to go?

Thank you.

The Issue still exists

the sound is randomly only left side or both sides with a huge delay

Same issue here while connecting the pair to a Google TV.

When I start playing videos or movies the sound is ok in both channels, randomly the slave device in the pair quit playing sound SMS no way to restore it but I need to reconnect everything.

Every device is connected to the same 5ghz access point that is few meters away.

"SMS" should be "and"... thank you to words' suggestion on my phone! 😉

So was there ever a resoulution to this problem? I'm experiencing the same thing. Bought 2 because the description says they can be paired. I paired/repaired/paired again and am having the same issue. Volume control works as if they're paired, and shows them as paired in the Home app, but music only plays on left speaker. I guess I'll be returning these and getting something different. Maybe the Amazon Echos?

Hi everyone,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

We appreciate all the steps you've tried, however we'd like to make sure if these steps are done:

Step 1. Place the speakers in the best position in your room

For the best sound quality, place the two speakers:

  • On top of a solid, level surface and away from the edge of the surface.
  • At the same height as each other.

Step 2. Set up both Nest Audio speakers

Set up both Nest Audio speakers in the Google Home app. Once they’re set up, they should appear in the app as separate devices.

Step 3. Pair the speakers

  1. Make sure that your mobile device or tablet is connected to the same Wi-Fi or linked to the same account as your Google Nest or Home speaker or display.
  2. Open the Google Home app Google Home app.
  3. Touch and hold the tile of the speaker that you want to pair.
  4. At the top-right corner, tap Settings Audio.
  5. Tap Stereo pair Next.
  6. Select two devices that you’d like to pair Next
  7. The lights on one of the speakers should start to flash white. Tap Left or Right to match the location of the speaker that blinks Next.

Note: Once set up, your Assistant should respond from the left speaker.

  1. Under 'Where is your pair?', choose a room for the stereo pair Next.
  2. Create a name for your stereo pair Next Done.

In the Home tab of the Google Home app, your stereo pair should appear as a single device. You can tap on your stereo pair to control the pair.

Step 4. Control the stereo pair

Media controls

All media controls (play, pause, next, previous and volume control) control the stereo pair, not individual speakers.

Keep us posted.

Hey guys, I was having this issue earlier when I setup the speakers to Wifi 4 network(2.4Ghz).

I recently upgraded my router and setup the speakers to a Wifi 5 network and the issue no longer occurs.

I suspect that the speakers are using the network to synchronize and the quality and local network bandwidth is pretty important.

It seems that with last experimental firmware the issue with Google TV have been addressed.

The delay between images and audio is few ms.

Now Google should better integrate those devices in a well build ecosystem.

The delay is still there when connecting directly to my videoproiector and TV.
