Nest Hub Max Default Speaker

ScottG69

On my Nest Hub Max I have a default speaker set to a Speaker group that contains the Nest Hub Max and a Chromecast Audio device. This had worked for a very long time. But about 8 months ago, this stopped working.

If I say play music on the specific speaker or the speaker group, it works fine. It's just the default speaker when I don't specify, that does not work.

Can some help?

Hi @ScottG69,

I'm really sorry to hear that you are having issues while trying to reproduce music in your default speakers. it's definitely frustrating when things that used to work smoothly suddenly stop.

it would be helpful to gather some additional information to see if we can troubleshoot the issue. Here are some questions that might be useful:

  • Have you made any changes to your Nest Hub Max settings or network configuration around the time this issue started?
  • Have you tried restarting your Nest Hub Max and Chromecast Audio device?
  • Have you checked for any available software updates for both devices?

Once we have a clearer picture, we can explore some solutions to get your default speaker group working again!

Regards

Josh

Hi Josh, thanks for the response and yes it is very frustrating when things stop working like this. This feature and recipes (now deprecated) were the reason I bought the device. So the justification for keeping are dwindling....

To answer your questions:

  • Have you made any changes to your Nest Hub Max settings or network configuration around the time this issue started? - No changes for a long time
  • Have you tried restarting your Nest Hub Max and Chromecast Audio device? - Yes
  • Have you checked for any available software updates for both devices? - Yes

Same issue here with standard google home devices and google home minis. Ongoing for multiple months.

Hi @ScottG69,

I understand you've already tried some great troubleshooting steps! It's definitely a good sign that you haven't made any recent changes to your setup and have already restarted the devices and checked for updates.

Here are a few additional things we can try:

  1. Delete and recreate the speaker group: This can sometimes refresh the connection between your Nest Hub Max and Chromecast Audio. In the Google Home app, go to Settings > Devices, groups & rooms > Speaker groups. Delete your current group, then recreate it with both devices.
  2. Check individual speaker settings: Make sure both the Nest Hub Max and Chromecast Audio are set to allow casting from the same source (like your phone or music service). You can usually find these settings within the Google Home app for each device.
  3. Try a different default music service: If you're using a specific music service as your default, try switching to a different one temporarily. This can help isolate if the issue might be with a particular service integration.
  4. Factory reset the Nest Hub Max (as a last resort): This will erase all your settings and data. Make sure to back up any important information before proceeding. You can find factory reset instructions in the Google Home app under your Nest Hub Max settings.

If none of these steps work, there might be a broader issue with speaker groups. I recommend letting our team know directly through the Google Home app. You can do this by going to Settings > Help & feedback > Send feedback. The more information you provide about your setup and the troubleshooting steps you've tried, the better picture they can have.

Also please let me know the resoults so besides the feedback through the Google Home App we can assist you further.

Regards,

Josh

Hi Josh,  sorry for the delay in responding. I had forgotten about this issue. That said, when I went back to give some of these ideas a go, it miraculously is working again. All I had to do was add another speaker to the group, then remove.

Thanks for your help
