Nest mini stopped connecting to wi-fi

Hi,

Something odd has happened with my Google nest mini. It stopped working a few weeks back when there was that big Google outage.

I've only just found the time to really try to get it working again. But I just can't get it to connect to WiFi during the setup process.

I haven't changed anything about my wi-fi setup since before it stopped working. I'm using a Google wi-fi router. The router is right next to the speaker. The router connects fine to other devices

I've tried rebooting everything including the app. I've factory reset the nest mini.

But it just keeps saying “I can't connect to the Wi-Fi network. You might want to check the connection settings in the Google Home app”

It does work though if I set my phone up as a WiFi hotspot and connect using the app on my tablet. But obviously, that's not much help as I need it to connect to my home wi-fi.

Any suggestions?

Any suggestions gratefully received. I'm pretty stumped otherwise.

What band are you running your WiFi on? 2.4GHz or 5GHz?

If the Nest WiFi lets you (I'm not sure what it's capable of), make sure you have separate 2.4GHz and 5GHz network names and connect to the 2.4GHz network, or see if you can set your 5GHz network to a lower channel in the 36-48 range).

Once you get it connected, check the firmware of the Nest Mini. If it's been updated to 275994, then there is a known issue that Google has introduced in this firmware that breaks connection to 5GHz WiFi when using the higher range channels 149-165.

Thanks Hiluke, that could be it.

Google wi-fi has the same name for both bands, so I'll have figure out how to get it to connect specifically to the 2.4ghz band. I'll let you know how I get on.

Sorry it's taken so long to reply Hiluke. It seems it's impossible to force 2.4g wi-fi on Google wi-fi.

Anyway, I managed to try it today. I had to run a long extension cable out to the garden so that I was far enough away that the 5g WiFi couldn't reach.

First I factory reset the nest mini and reset my phone. Then I verified that my phone was definitely connected to the 2.4g band. Then I tried to set up the nest mini using the Google home app.

But I got exactly the same results. It still says I can't connect to WiFi.

Any other suggestions?

Also, FYI, I logged back on with my android hotspot. I checked the firmware. It's 277099.

And, in case it helps, the cast firmware is: 1.54.277099

I also tried using my tablet to set up the connection to Google wi-fi, just in case it was my phone that was the problem. But that didn't work either.

I also tried connecting to a different access point in the same mesh network in case I just had a rogue access point. No difference.

It's definitely something about the combination of the nest mini and the Google wi-fi.
