Playing BBC Radio on Home Hub

Block

I have always been able to play BBC radio stations on my Home Hub by asking 'play radio 4', but today it just responds 'i can't do that on here'. What has changed?

Hey everyone,

I have some great news to share! This issue on BBC Radio should now be resolved. You can now go back to listening to your favorite BBC station on your speakers/display as normal. If for some reason you’re still experiencing problems, please try rebooting your devices to refresh the settings.

Cheers,

Muddi

Me too, since Friday-ish.

Exactly the same here, absolutely infuriating and I hope it's sorted soon, either by this techy community or BBC

Same problem for me, started getting the 'I can't do that here' messages on Tuesday, fiddled about, reset speaker, mucked about with Google Home and my LG speaker app and got it to work temporarily through Chrome cast but it's gone again now. Whose problem, is it BBC or Google? Someone sort it please

I'm having the same issue. I always leave the radio on for my dogs and now I can no longer play radio on the speaker. When I ask it simply replies "can no longer perform that here". I've followed advice online to add the feature via settings but there isn't even a radio option. Incredibly frustrating as I enjoy the radio playing when working from home.

Another thing as well what are the Badges about that you earn  when complained. I don't want a badge from Kudos I just want Radio 2 on my speaker

I hate that I joined this thread for the same reason. So my apologies for pestering you with this reply!

I am having the same problem.  When I ask the Google assistant to play radio 4 I get the 'I cannot do that here' reply, but when my husband asks her to play radio4, she does!!  It has worked successfully for me for 5 years until a few days ago.

All BBC stations are not playing on Google Home as of this week - and Google says same reply ‘can’t do that here, ask me to play on one of your other devices’

Ok it looks like this is not getting sorted so I'm unsubscribing from this thread.  I've discovered so many more radio stations in the last week so bye bye BBC radio, see ya!

Similar problems here - same thing happened a few weeks ago but then came good  again. Plays Ok when through BBC Sounds app on phone but will not play on direct voice command.

#metoo. Sometimes it says I need to have Apple music. Works fine on my Amazon echo device.

Not working for me either - stopped working yesterday. Spoke to a Google person in online chat and they waif it was something to do with iplayer now coming through TuneIn radio. Won't play via TuneIn and the original sounds app appears to have disappeared from the home app - I'm sure when I set it up a few years ago I added the sounds app. Anyway, it's very annoying and needs fixing ASAP.

It can't be anything to do with the service providers as I have the same problem in Australia where one device won't play Radio 4 while the other will. It would be nice to have an official statement from the BBC though (following the one several days ago).

It's not a voice issue either. If I add "play BBC Radio 2" to a Google Home routine it works, if my wife does the same it says "can't be played please try on another device". The only difference between our accounts is that I am the Google One account owner and she is a family group member. We have it set so we both have seperate voice recognition profiles (when she speaks to Google she gets a different voice replying than when I do it, deliberately and this still works). It has to be a user level permission issue.

So we can rule out the BBC?

This is a Google issue?

Same issue here very frustrating....

So I posted here on Saturday with the same problem as everyone else.  Today the same again but decided to cast from phone to hub. I've always wondered why the song "artist" and song "title" never showed on the hub display. Now casting from BBC Sounds App, my phone display shows Gary Davies and the song titles etc which is correct, but nest hub is displaying Ken Bruce LOL... now that is just wrong, and more than annoying.

I guess we won't get any responses until after Easter...

Still not working here. As each month passes the Nest ecosystem seems to get worse. Unreliable, unresponsive,

A few days ago I joined others in reporting that BBC channels no longer stream to my Nests.  Today I can confirm that Planet Radio stations have stopped working too.  Global Player channels appear to be ok, but it appears that Google radio streams are taking a battering.

Makes a mockery of a ‘smart speaker’ when they’ve become severely restricted with the problem getting worse daily.

Hackers, financial, technical, or incompetence, I wonder?

Ok. I can get around this by putting on a silly voice (unusually high) when making the request! If I use my own voice it doesn't work. Crazy I know but it's working now!

Your silly voice won’t make a difference to this problem!
Did make me laugh though 👍

gave the silly voice a go but made no difference the message is still the same ….

I can’t do that her but you can ask me to play it on one of your other devises !

It is not speaker related at all.

Try setting up a routine in Google Home that plays the BBC, it won't do it, unless it has been set by the Google Home administrator account.

That is why some people find it works and some don't.

The voice recognition side is dependent on you haveing a current voiceprint registered in Google Home. This is why changing your voice sometimes works - the system is seeing you as someone else, a guest presumably, and it will play BBC radio for you.

It is a Google problem relating to user permissions, not BBC problem.

Who do you think needs to sort this out, Mr H, individual users or Google?

Seriously! This is bizarre & quite concerning !

I’m able to stream BBC stations on a home hub max by opening BBC Sounds and choosing a channel on the screen. This can be done on a google speaker though unfortunately and you’ll have to wait for a fix.

The suggestion to cast - on here somewhere - is useless. Yes, you can do that, but may as well simply listen on the device from which you are casting. It's really bad that there is so little comment on here from Google,  There are clearly loads of people affected and Google don't seem to be doing anything at all.

I’m still having problems trying to play bbc radio on my google nest….any ideas if or when it’s going to be fixed? Thanks

Chrisl3000

BBC SOUNDS website says they are aware of this problem and investigating.

Thanks Chris. Apart from the thread starter,  yours is the most useful post that I've seen here.

Rather than just moaning (quite rightly) on here, can I suggest that the you submit a review to Trust pilot or somesuch and warn others off Google Nest, rather than just your own boycott. This will potentially hurt Google more and perhaps lead to them pulling their oft ankle hugging socks up.

Just checked Amazon Echo (Alexa) prices - some very reasonable offers. Definitely made the wrong decision when I went with Google, I'd have functioning devices for a start and none of this hassle.

Me too, as of this morning (11/04/23) BBC Radio will not play on a standard Google smart speaker, stating that I can play on one of my other devices.  Oh Well. As ken Bruce has gone over to Greatest Hits radio now, and Steve Wright was axed, the daily content is dull anyway, so I have decided to stay with GHR for the forseeable.  I am sure I am not alone!

So far and for over a week, a wholly unacceptable response to this 'crit-sit' from you Google. There will be 1000s, if not hundreds of 1000s, of 'customers' who paid and invested in your company to be able to enjoy this major and popular feature. Furthermore, this issue appears to be setting a new precedent within your company whereby your threshold to ignore your customers is being pushed to an all-time high, i.e. this issue is proving to be a good test for you to ignore customer protest and not do anything to resolve an issue. Of course, why would you care to address unless there is an impact to your business commercials, e.g. if every one of us had a Google Pixel 7 Pro on order but were pending payment until you fixed this issue. Maybe then you might give us the courtesy of a sincere response on this thread, or perhaps this becomes news worthy for BBC News itself. Please wake up to this significant issue, put your people on it to fix it fast and apologise to all your disgruntled and peeved customers for the very long running inconvenience this is causing. Thank you in advance.

We regularly listen to BBC Radio 4 in the mornings & BBC Radio 2 during the day, along with other BBC broadcasts from our Google devices. We have several Google nest devices round the house. When we ask for BBC radio stations, we now get a message saying " I cant  do that here but you can ask me to play it on one of your other devices". We get the same message from all the other devices. If we are unable to get this fixed, we shall have no option but to stop using our Google devices and get some old fashioned radios. I understand that this may be fixed soon, but if the problem  pesists, we are off to get some new radios & throw out our Google devices. Please advise - urgent!

Same here. I have spoken to support (real person on the telephone) and this is a known problem that they are "working with the BBC" to try and fix. They gave me an estimate of 2 days yesterday.  I can still cast BBC sounds to all my devices and speaker groups from my phone, then the speakers take over and I can stop casting from my phone!

Well done at getting through to a real person. 👍

used bbc chat today, bbc  still investigating or more likely started investigating after the Easter holiday- good to know that they are aware and still working on it, but ………….
