RTE Radio one is not working on any of my Google Nest speakers. Other radio stations are working!

JCKe

All day long today it was impossible to play RTE Radio one on any of my Google Nest speakers. All the other radio stations I tried were available to play including RTE 2 FM. RTE usually streams from Tune-in. Is this a known problem today?

I tried it just now 115hrs 4/4/2022 and I got the response " This station is not available in your country". I then asked my google speaker to play RTE Radio 2 and it played without a problem. I asked it to stop and this time I asked it to play RTE Radio 1 and it played the station as requested! Perhaps this may work for you? Not a satisfactory work around, "but any port in a storm". Best of luck.

Hey JCKe,

Thanks for reaching out. I know how relaxing it can be to listen to your favorite radio station on the Google Nest speakers. To confirm, are you able to play it on the TuneIn app/website? Does the same issue happen when you play it on Google Assistant on your phone? Also, let us know which country you are located in.

Please try playing the radio station using the frequency. You might want to get in touch with the station as well since the issue is isolated on a specific station.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,

Sorry for the delay in responding to you. I do not use Google Assistant on my phone. I am located in Ireland. I have tried playing the radio station using the frequency but the result is the same. As before RTE Radio one's sister station RTE two (RTE 2FM) plays without any difficulty.

I can add to this, RTE radio one sporadically stops working on my Google nest as well, nest cannot find it. The station still plays on TuneIn and I can cast from my phone to the Nest device. Devices are on the latest firmware.

At one point a few days ago it was possible to get the station by asking for it by wavelength! Even that has ceased now.

Hey DOLeary,

To confirm, does the same issue happen when you use the Google Assistant app on your phone?

I have downloaded, installed and tried Google assistant on my iphone. No, it generally does not work.

Twice yesterday Google Nest managed to locate the station by name and wavelength but the result cannot be reliably replicated and nine times out of ten the station is not found.

To reiterate, the station streams, it is still locatable  on TuneIn just as it has been. Once playing on TuneIn I can then cast it to the Google Nest but Google Assistant cannot reliably locate the station and is now more consistent in failing to find than the reverse.

I have also emailed RTE in case they have made changes that affect this station.

Thanks again. I too have checked this out i.e. searched and found the station on TuneIn and successfully casted to the speakers. I contacted Google who confirmed that they are aware of the problem, and said they have alerted RTE, who they say are the solution to this problem. I contacted RTE and left a voice message but I wouldn't be too confident that I will get a response any day soon! Hopefully, as more people contact them they will decide to fix the problem.

Hey JCKe,

Appreciate the update! I'm glad to know that you can listen to your favorite radio station now. How about the others? This looks like an issue with the radio station on streaming devices like Google Home/Nest speakers and displays.

For other users that still have the same issue, please try rebooting your device by unplugging it from the power source.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey JCKe,

Perfect! It's nice to know that you are able to play RTE Radio 1 now, and thank you for providing the steps that you've tried.

@NYDubliner: Are you able to play it now? If not, please try the steps shared by @JCKe, and let us know how it goes.

Interesting. Worth a shot I guess. Doesn't make any sense. It's very broken. It's almost like Google doesn't recognize the "R-T-E" part of it as it will reply with either "R-TAY-E" or "Route" as in the abbreviated "rte." AI fail.

It is still working ok for me every day since I replied to you 4/4/2022. The fact that it has never failed (for me) with "RTE Radio 2" makes me think that the "RTE" part of the instruction isn't the problem. It the "1" part of the instruction that appears to be the stumbling block..

When I request RTE Radio 1 now, the response is, "Alright here's 89.4 Radio 1 on TuneIn" and away it plays! Hope it works for you.

Hey NYDubliner,

To confirm, are you able to listen to RTE Radio 1 before? Which country are you located in? What is the language set on your speaker? Please check "My Activity" on the Google Home app to see if your speaker understands your command.

Follow the steps below to know-how:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. At the top-right, tap the account.
  3. Tap My Activity

Keep us posted.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi Muddi,

I am in the US. Yes, RTE Radio has worked since we purchased the Google Home mini years ago. The language is set to 'English (United States)'. Looking at the activity log, when it used to work it shows "Streaming RTE Radio 1 from TuneIn". Now it says "I looked for rte radio 1, but it either isn't available or can't be played right now."

In my routine, I have the command set as "RTE radio 1" so I don't think "one" or "1" has anything to do with it.

Hey NYDubliner,

Apologize for the delays. Looks like the issue is isolated to RTE Radio 1 only. To confirm, have you tried to reach out with the station to check if there's an issue on their end?

I'll wait for your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

It works fine on Tunein and can broadcast. So it is not the station.

Hey Dd12345,

To confirm, are you having the same issue when using the Google Assistant on your phone to listen to that specific station? Are you having issues with other radio stations as well?

I'll wait for your response.

Cheers,

Muddi

I don’t use google assistant on my phone. I do use the Tunein app, and cast RTE 1 from that to my speaker. If I ask the speakers it does not work.

i sometimes have an issue playing a station called RTE Gold. But with RTE 1 it never works since Jan this year.

All other stations work that I ask for.

Hey Dd12345,

My apologies for the delayed response. Are you still having issues playing RTE 1 on your device? I tried to reproduce the issue but it's working on my end. Could you tell us what country are you located at?

Looking forward to your response.

When i look at my previous activity when Rte radio 1 used to word the activity records the number 1. Now it uses the word One. That is the confusion.

Just wanted to report back that RTE Radio started working again on my Google Home Mini a few weeks ago. We went away for a week and came back and it was working again haha. Happy days!

Hi, I do have the issue with Newstalk radio. When asking my nest, he said streaming via tune in but no sound.

It works on the tune in app on my phone and I can cast it to the nest.

Any suggestions?

JCKe

Hi David, I am having a similar problem just today (26th May 2022) with all the radio stations that I request Google to play and that use TuneIn. The response from the speaker is as normal but it doesnt play the station. As in your case it works on the TuneIn app on my phone and I can cast it to the nest. Hopefully Google will sort it out.

Same here. RTE 1,2,Lyric and Newstalk and Today FM not happening. But yet I can play any UK station! I'm in Ireland

JCKe

Hi RayT1,

I am in Ireland too! I have been on to Google and it seems that this is "an emerging situation". I think we will have to sit tight and wait for Google to solve the problem as the solution is on their side of the house.

I am in South Africa and I have the same problem. Says it is tuning in, but then nothing plays.

Hi, I have tried every radio station from Ireland and none of them play on command . Listening through TuneIn app at the moment. Not ideal . Can’t figure it out on what’s happened. Does anyone know?

JCKe

I have had a response from Google regarding this problem. I am told "that they are working on it". So I suggest that we wait and hope!

Update 29/5/2022

Everything appears to be back to normal now, and the radio stations that play using TuneIn on my Google speakers are working again.

By the way, thanks to @JCKe for updating. I'll keep this post open for few more days, feel free to update this if anyone of you is still experiencing the same thing.
