Speaker group problems with multiple apps

So I have a bit of a long running problem that's driving me a bit crazy.

Four Nest Minis and two Chromecast devices (one is even brand new Chromecast with TV, tried to upgrade it to see if it helped with this issue and it doesn't.)

Playing music to a speaker group including all of them has two major issues that have persisted.

Sometimes the Chromecasts only will begin to have choppy playback and just go totally garbage. Restarting them doesn't fix it. This even happens to the Chromecast that is literally a few feet from the router (ethernet isn't an option else I would do that..) and does not affect the Minis at all. Chromecast in question is brand new out of box literally.

The more persistent and problematic issue, however, is it will stop playing and disconnect from the media player quite randomly. Sometimes it's fine for 30 minutes or an hour, sometimes several hours, sometimes it works all day, sometimes it's worthless and fails constantly.

I would normally chalk it up to a Spotify issue but, on a whim, I recently decided to try YT Music and see if that worked. Long story short: Same problem.

This leads me to believe it's an issue with the speaker group/Google Home and not the app casting the music. Restarting doesn't help, plus it's a huge pain to have to go through and reset six or seven different devices anyways and that is not a solution. I bought the devices specifically to play music to as a group and that's the only purpose they serve.

Each mini is placed around the house with mic disabled and already has the movement detection or whatnot turned off to minimize issues. Not sure what else to try - I already looked online and can't find any kind of debugging/error log I can look at to even know where to start.

Issue is extremely bad today. Starting casting to a speaker group and the Chromecast with TV wouldn't even cast.. just nothing. Was able to pull it up in the Home app and it was recognized, but wouldn't play. Restarted it and the music picked up shortly but then, same as described before, it just stops playing on the entire speaker group and the music app pauses after barely 5 minutes. Happens with Spotify and YT Music.

There has to be some kind of error logging somewhere? How are we supposed to have any idea how to track down issues? Plus it's the only reason I bought these devices, so it's a little frustrating that they fail to function so frequently.

Hi Losian,

This is not the experience we want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: when did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made?

Before we proceed further, I wanted to give you more details about speaker groups:

  1. Most Google Nest speaker, display, and Chromecast devices should receive an over-the-air update to allow those devices to continue to function in speaker groups. Refer to the Cast firmware versions below for the minimum versions:
    1. Nest Mini, Nest Audio, Nest Wifi Point > 1.56x
    2. Chromecast Audio, Chromecast (2018), Chromecast Ultra, Nest Hub (1st gen), Nest Hub (2nd gen), Nest Hub Max, Google Home, Google Home Mini, Google Home Max > 1.54x
  2. Speaker groups containing non-Google speakers or Cast-based devices may not work properly if they don’t receive a software update. You may notice these devices do not play audio in a speaker group. Third-party Cast devices like soundbars et al. with Chromecast built-in will need to be updated to Cast firmware 1.52.272222 and above.
    1. Note: Not all device models will receive software updates. As a result, they may no longer work in speaker groups and will need the Device Utility app to complete each setup.

Refer to the Find your device's firmware version help center article for how to find a device’s firmware version using the Google Home app.

To start with, It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers, then your Chromecasts and TV.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan
