Speaker pairs can't find each other.

Hinch

This issue started a week or so ago. Both the speaker pairs I have (GH Minis) have stopped working. They appear in the Home App, but if I try to cast to them I get the message from the primary speaker in the pair "I can't connect to the other speaker in this pair. Make sure it's connected to power and wifi." They are both powered and connected to wifi.

I've tried rebooting, unpairing and re-pairing, power cycling my router, everything short of factory resetting all 4 devices. Since this is two distinct pairs having the same issue, it seems more like a bug than a one-off.

All speakers in questions are running System firmware version: 264660 Cast firmware: 1.56.264660

Also if I adjust the volume by touching the speaker, they don't both change volume as one expects with the pair. If I use the home app to adjust the volume, only the primary speaker of the pair changes.

Hi nfillon,

Thanks for reaching out. Oh no! I am sorry to hear that your speaker pairs are not working. I understand your concern and would be more than happy to help find a solution. First, I have some quick questions.

  • Which Google Nest/Home devices do you have? (model name, generation number)
  • Are you seeing any error messages in the Google Home app or from the devices? If so, what does it say?
  • Are all of your devices showing up as connected on the Google Home app?
  • What troubleshooting steps have you tried so far?

Thank you for your patience, I look forward to your response!

The problem I was having was with Google Home Minis (first generation) in stereo speaker pairs. The error I would get when trying to cast to the pair was "I can't reach the other speaker in this pair. Make sure it is connected to power and wifi."

I was having this problem with 2 different pairs of speakers. Current, my dining room speakers aren't working as a pair.

In the google home app, sometimes when this happens a second device will show up in "other devices" and disappear eventually.

Rebooting hasn't helped. Unpairing them and re-pairing them also hasn't helped.

Here are photos of what I mean.

I am having the same problem with my google home mini pair (same firmware version, same error message).

Same problem for me with 2 x Google Home Max. Removed them from home app, reset them, reset router, nothing works. Please advise

Any help please? This is really frustrating

I've had no luck finding a fix. This has to be a firmware problem on Google's end. Every now and then it feels like it's been a few days since they depaired so maybe it's fixed.

Then it does it again.

But just leaving them alone often they eventually pair back up without any intervention.

I'm also having the exact same problem. Tried repairing, factory resetting both paired devices, nothing seems to work.

Try resetting your router, delete home app, reinstall, delete the speakers, add again,

Tried everything. Several times. Including different accounts, iOS- based Home App, outdated version of Home App, used different names for speakers, pair of speakers, added an additional room...
Nothing works...

Same problem here:
Google Home Max, Firmware 275994, Cast-Firmwareversion 1.56.275994

I am in contact with Google Support, but so far no results. Last request sent on Januar 2nd, still no answer.

Let the group know if you get anywhere with google's support . I am on the same google max firmware version (1.56.275994). I tried implementing network settings that I got from someone at google nest support team but no luck with it. The issue is that two devices are NOT talking to each other, its not the issue with internet connection. I just wish they let us rollback firmware version or patch an update.

Here is the setting they provided (again - this didn't help the issue)

Router Settings

  • Channel interference (channel congestion from too many devices, optimal channels for 2.4GHz is 1,6, or 11)
  • UPnP should be enabled.
  • AP Isolation disabled.
  • Make sure a VPN or Proxy Server is not configured on the network.
  • Confirm distance between router, setup device and Google Home are optimal.
  • MAC Filtering should not be enabled on the router.

Preferred DNS settings

  • 8.8.8.8
  • 8.8.4.4

Ports that should be open:

  • Outgoing UDP Multicast on port 1900 and 5353
  • Incoming UDP Unicast on arbitrary ports > 53 and 123
  • Outgoing HTTP on port 8008, 8009, 80 and 44

Same problem with Google Max. Tried to contact google multiple times, they simply say my hardware is out of warranty. Its their stupid firmware update that broke it in the first place. This is most frustrating thing ever for the stereo pair just stop working.

yes it's not a hardware problem, so saying hardware is out of warranty is a poor excuse to not help provide a solution.

So I did the same thing with nest minis(gen2) and it worked perfectly without issue (until the Sonos patent Ruling). So it seems specific to the Google home mini (gen2).

Yeah but Google wouldn't admit that their stereo pair issues related to the Sonos ruling... because they shouldn't have been stealing IP in the first place... and now they don't want to patch up for older devices.
