“Turn off the (room) lights” plays music

I am ready to throw all of my Google devices into the trash. For the past few weeks, every time I ask Google on my smart speakers to “turn off the kids room lights” or “turn off the kitchen lights,” it plays a random song with the word “light” in the title from YouTube Music. Sometimes interrupting what was already playing. If I ask it to turn off lights, I never—EVER—want it to play music instead.

This happens in multiple rooms with rooms named “kitchen” and “kids room” in the Google Home app. I used to be able to turn lights on and off with my voice just fine, and I can do so with the Google Home app.

I have a Nest WiFi and Point, Nest Audio speakers, and a myriad of other Nest speakers and displays throughout the house. I've tried rebooting everything to no avail. It has been happening for weeks.

When I view the history in my Google Account, it always clearly heard me exactly correctly and decided to play a song anyway.

Hi cassidyjames,

This is not the experience we want you to have, let me help you. A few questions: aside from your Nest Audios, which Nest speakers are we working with? When did your issue begin? Were there any recent changes made? Is the music coming from YouTube Music or other music services?

It would help a lot if you could do a sequential reboot first:

  1. Unplug the power cord of your router, followed by your Nest speakers.
  2. Plug them back in after 3 minutes.
  3. Restarting your phone might also help.

If the issue persists, you can revert one of your Nest devices and set it back up by doing a factory reset. Check out this guide.

Furthermore, try to retrain your voice by following the steps in this link and see if the behavior stays the same.

Let me know how it goes.

Best,

Dan
