WiFi Connection issues

Tezza_5
Community Member

I have recently acquired a new dual band router with new network and password and for some reason my nest mini's will not connect to new WiFi. All of my other devices in the home have connected without any problems. I have tried everything from rebooting the router to factory resetting the nest mini and everything in between, I am at a loss as to what to try next, any help appreciated, thank you

Hey Tezza_5,

Thanks for reaching out. We're sorry for the trouble this may have caused you — let's see what's going on.

A quick question: what message are you getting when you tried connecting your Google Nest Mini to your new network? Make sure your Nest Mini is within 15-20 feet of your router. If you're using an iOS, make sure Local network access is turned on for the Google Home app on your phone settings. Here's how: Privacy > Local Network > Google Home app. Give these steps a try:

  1. Go to iOS Settings> Wi-Fi.
  2. Connect to the Wi-Fi network that matches the device they're setting up.
  3. Look for something like GoogleHomeXXXX.k, GoogleHomeXXXX.o, or GoogleHomeXXXX.p.
  4. Navigate back to the Google Home app.
  5. The device should now be detected. Start setting up your device.

Keep us posted!

Best,

Alex

Hi I've tried all of the above and still saying couldn't connect to WiFi. Do you think my nest mini's need an update? to connect to a dual band. I'm at a loss I've tried everything. Thank you

Hey there,

Thanks for trying that. Google Home/Google Nest devices can only be updated if it's connected to the network. Could you try these additional steps:

  • Check router settings. (AP isolation must be disabled and UPnP must be enabled).
  • Reboot your Nest Mini, phone and router to refresh the connection.
  • Reinstall your Google Home app.
  • Use a mobile hotspot to set up your devices (To isolate the issue). You need to have a separate phone that will serve as a source of internet (mobile hotspot) and the other as your setup device. Connect your setup device to the other phone's mobile hotspot and let's attempt to set up the Google speakers on that network and let's see if it will connect.

Keep us posted.

Thanks,

Alex

Hey Tezza_5,

Thanks for coming back to us. This looks like an issue with your network since your speaker is working when connected to your mobile hotspot. Have you tried checking your router settings? Make sure that AP isolation is disabled and UPnP must be enabled.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey Tezza_5,

It's our pleasure! Follow the steps below to locate the MAC address of your Nest Mini:

Locating MAC address on mobile during initial setup

  1. From the Connect to Wi-Fi screen, tap the 3 dotsMore menu iconlocated in the top right corner.
  2. Tap Show MAC Address.

Locating MAC address on mobile after Google Home is set up

  1. Make sure that the mobile device or tablet is signed in or linked to the same account as the Google Nest display, Google Home speakers, and/or Chromecast device.
  2. Open the Google Home app.
  3. Select the device card of the speaker or display.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings > Device information.
  5. Under Technical information, locate the MAC address.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Hi thanks for the info, I found the Mac addresses for my mini's and inputted them into my routers white list, then I reset my router and my mini's and they still won't connect to my WiFi  I just don't understand how there can be a problem with my router when all other devices in my home have connected without any problems, I'm now very frustrated ********

Hi Tezza_5,

We appreciate all your efforts on trying the steps suggested above. I know that you have done a lot of troubleshooting steps, however since all your Google Nest speakers are experiencing the same thing after setting it up using a new router, it's best if these settings are met:

  • Check that your Google Home device is receiving power from a wall outlet. If your Google Home is receiving power, you will see a blinking white light on the back of the device.
  • Make sure that your Google Home device, wireless router, and device used to set up the Google Home (e.g. phone or tablet) are in close physical proximity to one another -- within 15 feet, if possible.
  • Please note: Networks that require you to connect through an authentication page (also called a "captive portal") are not supported by Google Home. This is typical of hotels, schools, dorms and businesses.

Configuring your Router Settings

  • Be sure to enable or disable the following router settings to allow Google Home to communicate properly with your router and network. All routers are different, so each setting may or may not appear on your particular router (or may be named differently).
  • Keep in mind that resetting or making changes to your router settings may have unintended consequences. If you need help or have questions/concerns, contact your router manufacturer or internet service provider (ISP).

Enable: Universal Plug and Play (UPnP), multicast, Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP)
Disable: AP/client isolation, virtual private networks (VPNs), proxy servers, IGMP Proxy. VPNs and proxy servers should be disabled on your computer as well (if applicable).

Let us know if these helped.

Best,

Princess

Hi thanks, but it's just getting too complicated for me now, re changing router settings etc, I shouldn't have to go through all these changes, I was reading that some nest mini's are not compatible with routers with dual broadband widths, if that's true then I'll never be able to connect mine, but thanks for all your help.

Hi Muddi, I just wanted to tell you I've finally connected my nest mini's. I had a spare Tplink router and googled about connecting it to my new router and it has actually worked, so it was definitely my new router that was blocking connection, anyway I'm a happy bunny now, thank you for all your assistance and can't praise you all enough. This community page is such a good idea. Thank you
