Hey all,

Apologies for the confusion around the supported devices for speaker groups. We let the right teams know, and we can confirm that speakers with Chromecast built-in are supported. We've also updated the list of supported devices on our Help Center article "Create and manage speaker groups" to make it more specific than before.

Thanks for your feedback here in the community -- feel free to update the thread if you have any further questions!

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey folks,

Sorry for the delayed response. Please note that there are selected TVs that are compatible or can be added to the speakers group with your Google Home/Nest devices. You may want to check with your manufacturer if your TV is one of those devices.

For now, we can only guarantee that the devices listed on this link will work best when grouped together.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Also, via more recent tinkering I have confirmed that I can use a nest hub to set the default audio and default tv to my android tv and all music and videos automatically play on the tv when asked. So now I have use of my surround sound.

Can you please elaborate? I can’t figure out what you did. I have a beast hub max and don’t see what you are referring to other than changing the default speaker, not create a speaker group using the nest hub max.

Okay, so basically you go into the Google Home app for your phone and you click the device and click settings for that device. It should show default tv and default speaker. Set them to desired tv and bam, Jester's your uncle.

Also after you set the defaults you can add the hub to a speaker group. The hub itself won't play whatever you cast, it will go to the tv.

This is not the problem. Read carefully, we can't add TV to speaker group. I don't want to setup my nest to play through TV, I wanna my Android TV play in the same group as my nest.

I get that, that's what I want also. But at the same time I don't wanna be wasting the ability to at least use my surround sound system while I'm stuck waiting for compatibility. I'm sure a lot of people here are of the same mind

I’ve literally been DMing Product Managers working on Chromecast and Google TV on LinkedIn to get this prioritized.  I think we all have to do that in order to get their attention.

Not to go on a tangent, but what worries me is that that’s not the only functionality that differs from Chromecast Ultra.

For example, my Bravia X90J is hooked up to a speaker system through the optical out.  With regular Chromecast Ultra, I could control the volume level using Google Home, but with GoogleTV I can’t.  This tells me that these are really two different systems but marketed to be the same.  Chromecast Built In, isn’t really the same as Chromecast, they just have some similar functionality.  This, in my humble opinion, is an engineering failure.  Having multiple workstreams working through two different APIs for Chromecast is a terrible idea, and I can’t believe Google went for that.

Your Chromecast Ultra can be added to a speaker group? Visible to add? Thanks!

I have a 6 year old Sony Sound bar that has “Chromecast Built in”. That function has always been a disappointing experience as it was only about 25% reliable. It would disappear from speaker groups and even from google home. And when it was there, it would often do nothing more than activate, but not play anything. Only a few months ago was an update put out that made it fully functional. That took 6 YEARS! Not a good track record in my book.

From a development standpoint its not hard to integrate a "Google TV" to be part of a Google speaker group. Also since the nest crossover they have destroyed features previously on nest such as opening the nest app on the TV to view cameras. 3 years later and functionality still missing. Seriously how different is a Google hub screen vs a TV or Chromecast.

A fix for this could come at any time guys.... I better not have to plug a Chromecast into my 2022 GoogleTV. That's rediculous.

with Google there is no telling .....

An external Chromecast will be able to connect with speaker groups then? Which Chromecast generation? I need to do that then .......

Any ideas how we can get this actioned or highlighted to the right people. This post isn't getting any traction and we have got loads of people having this issue. Just seem like nothing will get done this way. Ideas?

I like your drive,  if we could just get a realistic timeline from the Devs who are actually working on this. I would like to talk to a real dude who goes to work at google every day and have a normal conversation.

Honestly. ive stepped away from google. Slowly want to replace it.

They shouldnt have added it if they werent planning on continuiing its support imho.

Ive set up multiroom through my own homeserver with snapclients now. Flexible and works good enough, just a lil harder for people with no it affiliation

Same issue. Sony x80j that won't join the group as well. Get to it google... this is unacceptable.

Same issue here... I have a Nvidia Shield that used to be linkable to a group. Not anymore. Every time Google Nest/android TV launches updates I`ve been getting shivers in my bones. They've become specialists in messing up with stuff that used to work. =/

Migrating to Alexa asap.

About to go buy a Chromecast to plug into my Google TV w/ Chromecast built-in. LMAO this sucks

Do you think this will work then with an external Chromecast to plug in? This external Chromecast will be able to connect with speaker groups? Which Chromecast generation then?

It does work with an external Chromecast. Just confirmed it. Gen 3 is the one I’m using, $29 at target

Thanks! Would be great to be able to use my current speaker systems (5.1)! I really would like to buy the Chromecast Ultra...but no way to find in my country. Seems to be out of stock.

I too have an external Chromecast unit plugged into my receiver because my Sony Google TV with built-in Chromecast will not allow me to add to an audio group. @Google: I understand that bugs (which this clearly is) will present themselves in any software development but, this has been a lingering issue far too long and should have been addressed b y now. Maybe this forum isn't the place to have the issue acknowledged as it doesn't seem to have gained traction with any management or development team.

You explicitly say you support it and it has never worked.  Fix this.  Don't suck.

Here's the link stating support.

It's unbelievable that there's still no solution.
Having a €1200,- tv with build in Chromecast and not be able to do some basic stuff:-(
It's just software come on guys, do your magic and make a lot of people happy. Not just saying there's a fix, THERE ISN'T ONE!!!

Now, out of the lazy chair and chop chop!

Anyone else here thinking we have a claim here?

A basic function that doesn't work warrants some cash back I think!

I think we do have a claim. It is completely unacceptable for Google to do this.

Any progress around a claim? I'm mindblown by this chain and have tried everything that has come up on google/sony/forum support pages. Tried to chat google support and was given the run around...

Same issue here with TCL android TV. Even updated the Beta version for Chromecast built-in, but nothing.

Around a year ago for a brief period I could add my TV to a speaker group bit then this disappeared.

Also, I can't use the broadcast message feature to my TCL TV, but all Google branded speakers and cromecasts work.

Having Chromecast built in just mean we don't need an external Chromecast. Otherwise whet is the point of having an android TV? I might just as well buy a big computer monitor.... 😞

Please if there is a solution. I would really love to know

Same issue here with a Sony KE65 with chromecast built-in (beta) , absolute shame a 1400 euro can't be found for a speaker group? Do I need to buy a separate chromecast now?
