Hey all,

Apologies for the confusion around the supported devices for speaker groups. We let the right teams know, and we can confirm that speakers with Chromecast built-in are supported. We've also updated the list of supported devices on our Help Center article "Create and manage speaker groups" to make it more specific than before.

Thanks for your feedback here in the community -- feel free to update the thread if you have any further questions!

Cheers,

Muddi

Hey folks,

Sorry for the delayed response. Please note that there are selected TVs that are compatible or can be added to the speakers group with your Google Home/Nest devices. You may want to check with your manufacturer if your TV is one of those devices.

For now, we can only guarantee that the devices listed on this link will work best when grouped together.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,

Muddi

Notice that the firmware version you posted is lower than the version this TCL product currently runs, and yet it is not selectable to add to a speaker group.

A previous poster suggested that resolving this issue needs cooperation between Google, the people who post as community specialists, and TCL.

I have done some embedded Android work though not specifically on TVs. If I were looking for why a device that should be includable in a speaker group isn't, I would look at all the build options for Android TV to see if the OEM made a configuration error.

Can we all just be honest here please?

I have a sound bar that has a really old Chromecast firmware (1.36.145853) to be exact that works just fine in a speaker group.

3rd party Android TV based hardware (Shield TV, Mibox, various TV’s, etc..) were wittingly dropped  from speaker group support to promote the purchase of Google/Nest based hardware or hardware from Google partners.

It is a shame that it’s been over a year in this thread and “Specialists” are still giving the community the run around.

Articles, knowledge bases and information direct from Google have all been manipulated to suit their needs.

I apologize community, there is nothing that will likely change here.

Hey folks,

We apologize for the confusion. Please note that Android TV's are not supported in the speaker group. There's an ongoing discussion about supported devices for the speaker group on this link, feel free to post your feedback. I'll duplicate this thread on the main one for us to collate feedback easily.

Thanks for understanding.

On a more general topic, it is a bit annoying that the default approach to old open issues is to check if they can be closed for lack of interest, without investigating if anything has changed that would resolve the issue or make it irrelevant, especially for long-lived products like TVs. It also feels like Google could do more to encourage OEMs to update OS versions and support un-upgraded versions with moodule updates and bug fixes.

In the case of this issue nothing has changed in the symptoms. Updates that purported to fix the issue did not, and that has been noted in subsequent responses here.

Does TCL have any information to add to the discussion here?

Would love a solution for this. Ive read it's an issue with many other brands running Android/GoogleTV as well. What I've heard was that it also used to work years ago for those same devices but now they cannot be added into speaker groups anymore.

Pretty much the only solution currently would be for me to connect a physical Chromecast unit to my tv so that I can add it to a speaker group.

Hello,
I have several Google products (Minis and Chromecasts).  I have those devices set up in a group. This allows me to send music from Spotify to the "Inside" group, which then plays music thoughout my home.  I have a Chromecast that's part of this group, which I had plugged into the previous TV we had before we purchased this new one. On the old TV, I would tune the TV to the Chromecast input, then I would be able to hear the music that is being played on the "group" on the big speakers attached to the TV.  I hope this makes sense so far.
Hello,

I have a newly purchased TCL 65R646 TV. I purchased this TV because of the integrated Google TV. In this way, I could use it like the Chromecast I had connected to the old TV, but without the physical Chromecast taking up an input.

I was able to set up the TV and have the "ambient" mode running fine.  However, inside the Google Home app, I don't have a way to add the TV to the "Inside" group, meaning the TV will not play the audio that's being played on the other speakers.

What setting do I need to change on the TV that would then allow this TV to be added to the group?  I hope this makes sense.  Thanks for your time.

Contrary to what the community said, there no discussion to group Android TV. The feature is just broken and they don't plan to address the issue apparently, since we don't have any concrete answer in more than a year.

The only way to do that is to buy a separate chromecast and plug it in your TV. (yeah, I know...)

Just read the discussion we have here since months. We ar arguing about this too long but Google isn't interested to solve the problem. I bought another Nest Audio to have a Speaker in the livingroom for the group (although I would have a 9.1 Dolby system there).

Hallo, greetings from Germany! 2023... and still have the Same Problem. Also sony bravia. Do you guys have a solution by now?

This is just one example of googles failure. I recently switched to iOS. As soon as apple introduces good smart home speakers I’m gone.

Same problem here!

After upgrading my 16 years old tv-set with connected ChromcastGoogleTV dongle ( where I was able to create group of speakers with my TV ) to the latest one Bravia TV with GoogleTV as a Operating system , I am not able to add brand new TV with GoogleTV on board to any speakers's group.... 😞 there is no TV on list to pick up

Same problem here!

I have a Sony Bravia A80J and can not add it to a speaker group. This is one of the main reason for a Google TV!

Chromecast built in version: 1.61.329909

Please fix it ASAP Google!

This solution is such a joke. It doesn't work, I specifically bought a tv that has google built in and that $2000 TV doesn't have the functionality of a $40 speaker?? Maybe stop laying off your workforce and put some of them to work making your products actually function. By the way your interface is ALWAYS counter intuitive. I do tech support for every person I know on normal issues and I still have to google how to accomplish basic **bleep** in Google home because it's UI is so poorly developed.

Uma vergonha não se conseguir adicionar a android TV ao grupo de colunas.

Google, why is this not fixed? How terrible is it that people buy a TV with Google TV and Chromecast built in, then plug a Chromecast dongle into that same TV just so they can have that Dongle in the speaker group since the TV itself cannot be added. I mean that is like buying a car then having to also buy a tow truck and towing that car on the truck to move it. Does that make any sense at all? Do any Google people read this? Probably not. What a joke.

Google community specialist? I have a simple question, can you talk and report the problem to some one at google or you can just try to help people at the community without higher support from google?

Maybe we report the problem at the wrong place.

There is no shame to inform us of the real situation.

Kind regards

Good news all, my now pretty old Sony Bravia android tv is finally showing up in Google speaker groups!  Can't believe it but it works great! Not sure when the update came but noted it when adding a Bose portable to the speaker group - nice for outside on the deck.  Would include a screenshot for proof as I'm not sure I would have believed this post but that requires too much effort. Home 2.65.1.6 on my phone and TV has Chromecast 1.68.348747.  There is a new tv software update, I think I'm scared to install.

Its finally working. Lets hope they dont mess this up with another update. I wouldn’t be surprised if they do.

Nice. Hisense TV still showing 1.61.329909 as most recent but this is good news. Hopefully it gets to my TV soon. Google has some explaining and apologizing to do after doubling down on the "this was never possible!" notion and changing their help articles to say so...

Update: wound up installing the APK manually, but as someone else said, I'm unable to correct the delay, which is a dealbreaker; it's miles behind the rest of the house. Hopefully the native update gets pushed soon and fixes this?

No updates for me yet.

Philips 55PUS7334

Country: UK

OS: Android 9 (supposed to be getting Android 11 early this year apparently)

Chromecast version: 1.61

Thanks for the link, was able to install successfully and set up the speaker group. I was so excited, then I realised…unfortunately, I can’t adjust group delay for the TV, so for now, it’s still a no go for me 😞 Fingers crossed I get Android 11 and that fixes it.

I was able to adjust the audio delay in the advanced audio settings on my tv itself. Hisense here

It sounds that there were steps made for TVs. Has anyone been able to also add speakers to a group, for example Sonos, Bose, etc?

I added my tv to a speaker group so now the whole house is rocking

Google nest speakers and hubs

Google speakers and Google hubs were possible to be added to a group even before the update. What I am trying to understand is whether the update is related to TVs/products with Chromecast built in only, or generally other products? For example, I have a Sonos move speaker, but I am not able to add it to a group (it does not have Chromecast built in, but I can cast music over WiFi to this speaker only).

While I can’t currently test that, I’m guessing that doesn’t work. The functionality came with an update of the
