Cannot cast rented movie from Google TV app to Chromecast

I just rented a movie on Google TV,  but when I try to cast it to Chromecast, it plays for a few seconds and then I get the error message "this video cannot be cast from the google tv app to chromecast".  

I've been searching for advice but all I can find is the generic chromecast troubleshooting info, which is not what I need as casting is working fine from all other apps. 

I was affected by the recent Chromecast outage issues, but everything has been working fine since the fix was rolled out.
