Please help, am at my wits end!

I stream from my phone ( android)  via the Google home app ( newly updated) to my smart TV which has a 3rd Gen Chromecast attached.

All playing videos are juddering.

When I play them just on my phone they are fine and smooth.

I've tried unplugging everything, waiting a minute or so which was no better. My WiFi to my phone is good, WiFi speed good.

Hi there,

Thanks for contacting the community! I understand you've been casting from the Google Home app, which has been updated to the latest version. However, when you cast videos to your Chromecast (3rd gen), the videos tend to flicker. You've confirmed that the videos look fine on your phone, and this can be a bit stressful. You've already done some great troubleshooting steps, like unplugging everything for about a minute and checking your Wi-Fi. Don't worry, I'm here to help!

Regarding the issue you're experiencing, I need to ask you some questions first:

  • Does this issue only happen when you cast from your phone, or also when you cast from a computer?
  • What is the distance between your Chromecast and your router?
  • What's the make and model of the phone that you use to cast?

I'd like to share these troubleshooting steps that might help you:

  • Exit any battery-draining applications that are running.
  • Turn off power saving mode.
    • If your computer goes to sleep or becomes disconnected, this can cause the video to freeze (and eventually stop).
    • Adjust your power management settings, go to your computer settings and turn off power saving mode. Also consider plugging in your computer.
  • Make sure that your Chromecast and mobile device are connected on the same Wi-Fi.
  • Make sure that your Streaming device Firmware is updated: Open your Google Cast app > Click “Settings” next to your streaming device > Scroll down to locate “Firmware Version XXXX”.
  • Make sure that you have the Minimum system requirements to cast from Chrome.
