Google tv 4k hdr 60hz issue

chumchum08

I am having an issue with my setup. I was able to set 4k 60hz but not hdr or dolby vision. It says it is only available in 30hz. I know i have the correct hardware. Hdmi is a 60hz 8k cable running through pioneer vsx-834 receiver.  I had apple tv connected previously running in dolby vision at 60hz. Only once i switched to google tv, it is giving me this issue. However on a separate google tv on my visio tv downstairs it allows me to run in 60hz. Please help.

Check your TV settings. In my TV settings I had to set the HDMI port to enhanced for the Chromecast to work at 60Hz with HDR.

I dont see any options for this. What i don't understand is thus worked fine previously when apple tv was plugged into the same spot. I have it plugged directly into my pioneer receiver. Then running out to my projector. So there is no setting to adjust on the receiver hdmi. The receiver is fully capable to run on these settings and had worked with another device running apple tv in 4k dolby vision at 60hz. So why would it not work by simply swapping out the apple tv for google tv?

Thank you for helping out on this thread, carguy143!

Hey there chumchum08,

I'm just checking up on this thread; were you still having issues with HDR? If so, try going in to the Chromecast with Google TV settings and setting Dolby Vision to "Low Latency" to see if that enables 4K 60Hz.

I look forward to hearing from you, and if you have any more questions, please let me know.

Best regards,
Jeran

This does not seem to work. I am assuming the game mode is the low latency you are referring to.

No matter my settings. Dolby and hdr only works in lower resolution or 30hz.

This is really frustrating since everything i read said it could do dolby vision at 60hz. I purchased 3 google tvs for my tvs and plan to return them because of this. Its been a waste of my time.

And worse, i dont even get hdr at 60hz. Only sdr. Google tv is laggy and slow to respond on all my devices. I dont think they are ready yet. I love google, but these google tvs are just not very good. Even adding a universal remote required a work around to add it. Thats not acceptable at this stage of streaming devices. Fire tv, apple tv, Roku. None of those have these issues. I am very disappointed.

Hello chumchum08,

That is no good to hear. I can totally understand your frustration with this. I know I would feel the same if the devices were giving me so many issues with the resolution. If you would like, we can have Chromecast Support reach out to you via email. However, if you have already returned the Chromecast with Google TV devices, it's understandable.

Let me know if there is anything I can help with.

Best regards,

Jeran

I appreciate the help. I have not yet returned the items. I would be happy to work with support. If i can resolve the issue, i would keep them. I am just disappointed.  I feel like this should not be so difficult to resolve. especially if this is natively supposed to work. I know the configuration of my equipment is correct, since i have other devices that can run HDR as well as Dolby Vision at 60hz, so this is down to the google tv device itself.

I appreciate your help on getting this resolved. Please let me know what you need from me to move forward with this.

Thank you,

Hiya chumchum08,

No problem at all. I totally understand where you are coming from, and I would feel the same in your shoes. To have Chromecast Support reach out to you, please fill out this form, and they should reach out to you via email in a few days. If you would prefer to speak with them sooner, follow this link, and once you get past the initial questions, you should have a couple of options to speak with them.

Let me know which route you decide to choose, or I'll check up on you in a few days.

Best regards,

Jeran

Good afternoon,

Yes, i apologize, i have not had a chance to reply. I have been pretty busy. But yes, i am still having this issue. I have 3 google tv's and they are all seeming to run slow and laggy when moving through the interface. which seems a bit odd to me. just trying to open or move through the list of apps, or move over to the settings screen is slow and jittery/jumpy. I dont know why with current technology that this is happening. Also on one of my google tv's, i have it connected to my receiver, which is a 4k receiver. I used to have an apple tv connected in the same HDMI port and running my receiver to my projector. with the apple tv, i was able to watch in 4k dolby vision or HDR at 60hz. with my google tv in its place, i am only able to see 4k in 60hz if it is set to str. it does not give me the option to see HDR or Dolby Vision in 60hz. i have changed nothing aside from swapping to the google tv. I have tested and utilized the suggestions above. this does not fix the issues. if i switch to HDR or Dolby Vision, the only option is 4k 30hz. However, on my tv in my living room, i am able to run HDR in 4k at 60hz. i dont understand. I am getting frustrated with the google tv device, and also in order to add my harmony remote via bluetooth, i have to utilize a workaround of adding a fake remote suggested by a post i found. This works. however i should be able to just add my remote without a workaround. when attempting to add my harmony without using the work around. it just freezes in the pairing screen and i have to cold boot the device to do anything at all. i have let it sit for 30 minutes to see if it was just a time out issue, but the device actually freezes. to me, this is unacceptable. I have also noticed there seems to be some odd lighting when using the google tv. almost like faded light bars on the screen. when not using the google tv, they are not there. at first i thought it was the tv settings and adjusted the backlighting and other settings to try and get rid of it. but when not using the google tv, they do not show. this is also very frustrating. it almost looks like screen burnin, as if shadows are burned into the screen. again, these are things that are only happening with the google tv. I used to have amazon fire sticks. but had some issues with apps. so switch to apple tv. and it pains me to say that apple tv did not have these issues at all. I switched to google tv devices because i dislike apple as a whole and wanted to get rid of the only apple devices i had in my home. i mostly have google everything, so wanted to have google tv as my streaming device. i fear this was a mistake.

sorry for the long winded response. any help would be greatly appreciated. I will do my best to respond as i can, but i have quite a bit going on and dont find much time to circle back around to this forum. Thank you again for any help!

ok, i tried the path of contact us. the human element is gone from any kind of support. all it does is refer me back to forums. this is pretty sad. I think i am done with this now. it should not be so difficult to get help with a product. and we should not be sent to a forum to resolve issues. i should be able to reach out on a link to contact support. it should give me an option. 1. would you like to call. 2. would you like to email. 3. would you like to see our forum of issues and resolutions that others may have come across. customer support era is over.... its just called the run around now. give them the run around until their product is outside of the return policy so they are stuck with it.... 😞

Hello chumchum08,

That's no good to hear! You should be able to speak with them via phone call or online chat. The first part should ask what the issue is. Then the form will suggest some articles. Finally, it will offer live support. Here is what I see on my end:

First, I enter the issue.

Then, I see the support articles.

Finally, the options to speak with support after clicking Next step.

Let me know if you are able to get to those Contact options or if you have any more questions.

Best regards,
Jeran
