Same problem
Firmware 275994
Cast Firmware 1.56.275994
03-09-2025 05:59 PM
I'm in Colombia and I'm using a chromecast gen 2. I reset it like I read on Internet but now I havent been able to set it up again
03-09-2025 06:01 PM
Yep, it still says "cannot authenticate". Second generation model. Has worked for years. Suddenly doesn't, and this post has the most interaction anywhere on this community site.

Same issue here. Google seems to have pulled the plug on our CHROMECAST devices of all models and firmware.
System firmware version: 275994
Cast firmware: 1.56.275994
Language: en-US
MAC address: 7C:2E:BD:4B:1C:E5
IP address: 192.168.2.121
03-09-2025 06:17 PM
Doesn't work
03-09-2025 06:33 PM
Have done so and still same problem
03-09-2025 06:46 PM
I tried this and it doesn't work. I'm having the same issue. After resetting the device and going through initial set up again is when the error message comes up that device can not be authenticated.
03-09-2025 07:10 PM
Performed a factory reset and setup. Google Home could find the Chromecast, but could not authenticate.
03-09-2025 07:32 PM
Did all the usual resetting. No change.
03-09-2025 07:48 PM
After factory resetting on a 2nd gen device the chromecast no longer communicates with Google Home and pops an error.
03-09-2025 07:50 PM
Factory reset did nothing. One it gets to the page where the chrome cast is giving a code, the time app cries about authentication
03-09-2025 08:01 PM
Have factory reset, reset router, hard rebooted phone, all to no avail, it is totally the Chromecast issue, no other device in nest has strange 'firmware' note, <i> that is needs to be on same WiFi (it is) has latest end of Feb firmware update, also of not-do not have permission for Chromecast (only me on account/admin/says I have preview program, but I do not-well, should not) but clearly is it dimmed out-and I do not have permissions as if it has been taken over. All checks done, redone-location/local network/resets/reboots/clear/unistall/reinstall Home/all to no change, and only with the Chromecast device. It even SAYS I'm connected to the WiFi, but not the SAME WiFi (but all other devices are, and I have only one WiFi connected-cannot see anything else from anywhere.
03-09-2025 08:30 PM
Same here. North Carolina, USA. Gen2 chromecast
03-09-2025 08:54 PM
Have already done a factory' reset and am still getting code f6x8, not sure what model my Chromecast is but it's at least 6 years old. Also getting 'unable to authenticate Chromecast' also started about 12 hours ago today.
03-09-2025 08:56 PM
It will not authenticate to add the device to Google home after factory reset.
03-09-2025 09:14 PM
Having same issue, Gen 2 Chromecast reset to factory settings, unsure of firmware version since I can't reconnect to it
03-09-2025 09:44 PM
Now working even after reset
region Asia can't check version
03-09-2025 10:40 PM
Restart or even resetting doesn't work.
After resetting the device (gen 2), device won't authenticate.
03-09-2025 10:48 PM
This problem absolut affects the Chrocast Audio.
I have one HDMI-Chromecast and two audio that are affected.
03-09-2025 10:52 PM
Did all that and it’s still not working
03-09-2025 11:17 PM
tentei isso e agora o chromecast não autentica
03-10-2025 12:19 AM
Factory reset failed with authentication failure. Could be expired certificate? Hopefully good can still upgrade the cert if so. Pity no info from Google.
03-10-2025 12:35 AM
I believe we've all tried the factory reset multiple times. I don't know my firmware version (how can i check this?), I am in Germany.
03-10-2025 12:40 AM
Same here. I am in France, using a chromecast Gen 2.
Google Home will find my device without issue when I click on "add a device"
And I made factory reset and it works
But then when I sy yes to "set up Chromecast0613", it says "impossible to authentify, get on support.chromecast.com/chromecast ...
03-10-2025 01:35 AM
Any timeline on when this will be resolved?
03-10-2025 01:46 AM
I tried to factory reset and it's still messed up. Clearly, if this many people are having issues it's something in your code. Fix it or I'll never rely on Chromecast again. What a mess.
03-10-2025 03:31 AM
Exactly same . I have Chromecast from 2017 ,stopped working yesterday . Firmware not recognised message appeared . Factory reset and now can't communicate with device message . Have reset my Android and router ... Am in England , U.K.
Thank you
03-10-2025 03:59 AM
can't do that it's not in the home app any more
03-10-2025 04:35 AM
I tried this already and I get a new error saying:
'We couldn't authenticate your Chromecast. Please visit support.google.com/chromecast for help troubleshooting this issue.'

If you HAVE done a factory reset (Google now says, DON'T!) this workaround will at least get your Chromecast back on the internet.
A factory reset renders the device essentially invisible. To get around this I manually changed the date on my device to March 1. I could see the device to connect it to wifi (👍) but the add device portion failed 😕.
The default gallery shows on the tv (correct date, time, local weather) but the device is invisible to the Home App.

Hi Jill, any updates on this issue pls? Thx for your help..
03-10-2025 08:26 AM
Impossible to do it using Google home and impossible to do it manually
03-10-2025 08:33 AM
I did ALL of that.
Reset WiFi.
Change modem to factory settings.
Change Chromecast to factory settings.
Reinstall the Home app.
Try it on different TV sets.
Restart everything, once and again.
Nothing of all these worked.
The connection starts and the cellphone is recognized at the beginning, then it stops at the moment when the code appears on the screen and I get the "not recognized" message on the cellphone.
That happens in TWO Chromecast devices, there's a third one that's still working OK.

How to fix the trust chrome cast firmware issue my kid uses this
03-11-2025 05:25 AM
Hi @JillG I had same problem.
Region: Brazil
Model: NC2-6A5
I can see firmware version anymore, because I made factory reset to configure again.
03-11-2025 12:10 PM
Second generation, Spain
03-09-2025 10:56 AM
System firmware 275994
Cast firmware 1.56.275994
I don't remember the device I used, it's a ChromeCast, probably early generation (grey). UK.
03-09-2025 11:02 AM
Even worse with a factory reset. Now even VLC won't be able to use it!
Unable to authenticate. looks like a certificate that expired, really not OK!
03-09-2025 10:56 AM
I am getting this message while setting up "Unable to communicate with the chromecast"
03-09-2025 10:54 PM
Same here
