User tchebb on Reddit broke the issue down in a very comprehensive way.
(TLDR: Certificate expired. Not much for us to do, except wait for Google to fix the core issue. There are some workarounds provided in the Reddit thread though!)

Very technical breakdown of the problem.
Seems that Google need to change a certificate for 2nd generation chromecast devices. Great explanation and breakdown.
Now Google should be able to resolve the problem!!

Holy smokes, the fixes in that thread are to die for. Wish I had the ability to soak it up and safely do it lol. Definitely NOT in my wheelhouse, but what a great read! Thanks for the heads up on that though! I did post a stand alone 'issue' here, instead of just my initial reply earlier, with the information that I had gathered-stating that it indeed seemed as though it was a coding issue or an AI glitch, lent heavy on the coding glitch though, since the permissions were dimmed out. Such an odd thing though. You'd think you could at least hook up to WiFi, but just not stream since-however that would be even more frustrating to me, imo. hagn, thanks again!

My chromecast stopped working yesterday afternoon, about four o'clock. And it's still not working. The Netherlands. Did Google punish me for watching porn on saturdaynight?😗😚

Google's second-generation Chromecast and its Chromecast Audio are suffering a major ongoing outage, with devices failing to cast due to an expired security certificate. The web giant is aware of the breakdown and says a fix is in the works.
On Sunday, many users of these gadgets encountered an "untrusted device" error, preventing them from casting content to TVs and other displays. Tech-savvy netizens quickly traced the issue to an expired intermediate certificate authority – created by Google to handle authentication for the affected equipment – which lapsed on March 9, 2025, at 1644 UTC after 10 years of validity. Models relying on this authority no longer work as expected due to this expiry; they can't securely connect to Google's backend systems and authenticate themselves.
"We're aware of an emerging issue impacting Chromecast 2nd gen and Chromecast Audio devices, and we are working on a fix," Google told The Register on Monday.
In an update on the Google Nest community site, where Chromecast support seems to live these days, the internet titan added, "Do not factory reset your device - we will keep you all updated when the fix rolls out. If you have already factory reset your device, we will provide instructions to set your device back up as soon as possible."

Same with my Chromecast in the Netherlands, did everything to reconnect but noting worked. Hope Google will fix this problem soon.
03-10-2025 04:34 AM
I read that it's global Google doesn't support the Chromecast 1 and 2, they want us to buy Google TV, if this is true I will never buy any product of them. Then Apple will be my middlename.
03-10-2025 04:46 AM
My chromecast gen1 is still working fine, only problem with my gen2
03-10-2025 04:57 AM
I have tried factory reset but not I am not to connect to cast device with authentication error. How I should resolve this any steps which will help here
03-10-2025 05:43 AM
No way. It's a problem that only Google can resolve with an upgrade. But the question is (I've reset to fabric too one of my 2 devices): a reset device will be configurable in some way to get the update?
03-10-2025 05:48 AM
Yes , just set the date on your phone to March 7th 2025 and add it back.
03-10-2025 07:17 AM
The same happened, I tried to do everything, factory reset etc multiple time, but I am unable to even connect with chromecast after reset with the 4 digit code from TV as it's not appearing even after 20 efforts
03-10-2025 07:24 AM
You don't need to factory reset multiple times...just one is enough! 😉
03-10-2025 07:30 AM
We reset multiple times because the one time did not work.
03-09-2025 12:10 PM
I saw the same topics in 2023 and the problem is still here.
- Do you want to configure Chromecast1633?
- Yes
- Connecting... No, authentication failed, please proceed to the article that can't help with your problem.
So frustrating and disappointing.
03-09-2025 12:12 PM
Me pasa lo mismo. Soy de Argentina.
03-09-2025 12:12 PM
Samme problem sidder, jem med nu.
03-09-2025 12:36 PM
Same here in France...
03-09-2025 12:18 PM
Today, all my chromecast audio were offline! Resetted all devices (factory reset). Tried to add them back with google home. It says they are untrasted device, I m not able to have my any chromecast audio back to my google home!
I think it is happened after an update. Google please...don't do update. You are not able anymore to do a good company! Please just don't do nothing...
03-09-2025 12:24 PM
I'm in the same boat. My nest devices are working fine, it's just the Chromecast devices that will not connect. What is going on with this?
03-09-2025 12:28 PM - edited 03-09-2025 12:29 PM
Same here, chromecast switched off halfway through a program and can't setup now. Sort it out Google please
03-09-2025 12:38 PM
Me too. 5 chromecast audio devices working fine earlier today and now not at all.
03-09-2025 03:01 PM
03-09-2025 03:09 PM
Me aconteceu a mesma coisa.
Ontem estava funcionando,hoje não funcionou.
Resetei e tentei reinstalar e sempre dá mensagem que não foi possível autenticar. Aparece o código na TV, mas no google home aparece essa mensagem e não é possível concluir a instalação.

My Chromecast just stopped working today, It's either a gen 2 or gen 3. I tried to reconnect it in the Home app (android), but it was set up, just not registering my wifi. Nothing worked from the troubleshooting guidelines, so I ended up doing a hard factory reset. I deleted the old setting from the Home app. Now, my CC won't even get set up. When I open the Home app I click on "add device" it will find my CC and then want to establish a temporary internet connection. After that it thinks and thinks and then says "unfortunately I cannot communicate with your CC."
I have done all these steps before and after the factory reset:
Nothing works. I do not have an older device that supports the Google Home app (I tried) and we only have 1 TV. Any tips/advice are welcome.
I also tried to connect to the CC's wifi and open the Google Home App and see what happens then, but it still does not work.

Exactly the same problem here (Gen II device in the Netherlands). I also saw some Spanish and Portuguese language posts complaining about the same issue posted not long before your entry, so it might be a global bug that's very recently crossed some wires. If so, I think (hope) that the issue will be fixed soon. Until then, I'm keeping an eye (and an email alert) on this comment section.
