Unable to control TV with my Chromecast with google tv remote

I recently purchased a Chromecast with Google TV 4K version and set it up with my LG LED TV. Previously I had an Amazon Firestick HD and the remote worked flawlessly with the TV too, as in I was able to turn off the TV, control the volume etc with the firestick remote. However with this new Google TV I cannot turn off my TV or control the volume. I have checked and the HDMI-CEC option is enabled by default in the settings. My TV has all HDMI ports with CEC as default. I have even tried different ports but still no luck. I am also unable to add my TV as a device to pair with the remote, when i click on Add a Device it just shows a circle and goes back to the menu. Can someone please help? It's pointless spending money on google TV if it wont do it's basic functions on an CEC enabled TV.
