Hi all,

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family. We appreciate the opportunity you've given us to help keep your home safe and secure.

Today we have a few important updates to share about Nest Secure, Dropcam, and Works with Nest. These are all longtime Nest products that many of you have depended on to take care of what's most important, and we take your trust in them—and in us—seriously.

Over the years, we've launched new, updated products and features that deliver even more help and security for you. As we look at what it takes to support your needs going forward, it is increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware and newer, better options available.

As members of our community, we wanted to let you know about the changes that are happening:

Nest Secure
In 2020, we announced a long-term strategic partnership between Google and ADT, a leading US security and home automation provider. With this partnership, our goal was to develop even better solutions for greater customer peace of mind and choice, including giving users the option to add new types of sensors and professional monitoring.

We believe that our partnership with ADT creates a more helpful smart home security experience to help people connect and protect what matters most - both today and in the future. So starting April 8, 2024 support will stop for Nest Secure. Until that date, all current features will remain available and you can continue using your Nest Secure as you do now. After that date, your Nest Secure will no longer be accessible in the Nest app.

We understand that changing the technology in your home is hard. To show our appreciation and help provide a smooth transition, we will give users an exclusive offer for a Self Setup System from ADT on us (up to $485 value) or $200 to use on the Google Store.

Eligible Nest Secure users have been emailed with instructions on how to redeem this offer with a unique coupon code.

Dropcam
We are proud to have launched Dropcam over 10 years ago, and it was one of the first smart cameras on the market. As we look at what it takes to support your home security needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision to stop support for Dropcam starting April 8, 2024.

All features will remain available until April 8, 2024. Dropcam will no longer work after that date, and you will no longer be able to use your Nest app to check status. If you wish to keep your video history, please download and save before this date.

If you are a current Nest Aware subscriber, we will be offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired) on us to help you keep your home secure. If you are not a Nest Aware subscriber, we're offering a 50% discount toward a new Nest Cam (indoor, wired). Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence. We hope you will continue to trust us to help you at home. Please note, your Nest Aware subscription will not be automatically canceled. It will continue to work with any other Nest Cameras in your home. We will contact eligible Nest Dropcam users with instructions on how to redeem this offer.

If you're in the US, we can help you recycle your Nest Secure and Dropcam. Our third-party recycling partner will send a postage-paid shipping label to your inbox.

Works with Nest
We created Works with Nest in 2014 as a way for smart home devices from other manufacturers to take what Nest knows and help personalize your experience, such as turning off lights when you're away. The connected home has evolved significantly in the past 10 years. In 2019 we made the decision to eventually retire Works with Nest to unify our efforts around third-party connected home devices under a single platform for developers with a focus on compatibility, security, and privacy. We extended the support for Works with Nest for the last few years, and we will officially end Works with Nest as of September 29, 2023. Until that date, all current Works with Nest connections will remain active. Starting Sept. 29, those connections will no longer work and you will lose access to them. In the coming months, for those interested, we'll make available a script editor for you to create advanced home automations that will offer new features and capabilities. We're also working closely with our partners to provide replacement integrations where possible. Learn about the changes and options available to you.

Thank you for your support
We know you might have questions about these transitions and the change they bring; please rest assured that at Google, we are building and supporting devices and services that work well together and are there for you when you need them. We hope these upgrades will help ease the transition and offer new, helpful experiences for your home.

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause you, but we're committed to helping you and minimizing disruptions. If you need technical help with any of your devices, our support agents are standing by.

Thank you for being a valued customer and part of the Nest family.

Will this announcement impact my Nest x Yale Lock? Will I still be able to use my lock after support ends for Nest Secure?
This announcement only impacts your Nest x Yale Lock if you use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. Once support stops for Nest Secure on April 8, 2024 you will no longer be able to use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi. As a result, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock your door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock. Until then, there is no impact.

Only a Nest Connect device will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends. If you currently own a Nest Connect, you may need to move it closer to your Nest x Yale Lock to connect it to WiFi.

For users that do not currently own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge. We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect.

Will I need to buy a Nest Connect if I want to keep my Nest x Yale Lock connected to WiFi after support for Nest Secure ends?
If you currently use Nest Guard as a bridge to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi and do not own a Nest Connect, we will provide one at no charge . We will send eligible users an email in January 2024 with instructions on how to receive a Nest Connect at no cost.

I can’t (or don’t want to) install a Nest Connect in my home. What will happen to my Nest x Yale Lock if I don’t install a Nest Connect by April 7, 2024?
Starting April 8, 2024, only Nest Connect will be able to connect your Nest x Yale Lock to WiFi. Without a Nest Connect, you will no longer be able to lock or unlock the door using the Nest app. You will still be able to lock and unlock the door using the keypad on your Nest x Yale Lock.

Can I install a Nest Connect to use with my Nest x Yale Lock after April 7, 2024?
Yes, however you will need to factory reset your lock to use a Nest Connect as a bridge to connect your lock to WiFi . We strongly recommend installing a Nest Connect before April 7, 2024. This will ensure that you can continue to use your Nest x Yale Lock with the Nest App after April 7, 2024.

Killing Nest is just a dirty move of Google.

I believe that Google is not going to get away with this as easy as they think.

Google can do it just like that, ignoring thousands of customers who invested smaller or bigger ammounts in Nest?

They must let Nest running! There is no other rational way to do this.

Google! Leave Nest alive!

Anyone else having problems getting the right discount from Google for replacement dropcams?  We were early adopters and have a combination of dropcams, nestcams and google cams.  Received an email stating Google is discontinuing dropcam and that we can replace with new ones for 50% off.  So we did and then read a few articles saying that if you have an active nest aware subsription (we do) on your dropcams then they will replace at no charge.  I started a chat with google and almost 90 minutes later they have no clue why we got the wrong email and so sorry but they cannot fix the problem.  Google why can you not figure out how to replace our cameras according to your terms?

I spent thousands on the Nest integrated system (thermostats, doorbell camera, Yale lock, 9 Nest Detects, Nest Guard) plus installation.

ADT will not budge on only offering 2 door / window replacements for free....total BS.

Additionally I know need 2 apps to manage my house and what's to say that they don't discontinue the other products in the next year.   This is absolutely crappy service for a product that works totally fine.

Hi All, not sure it will do any good, but I started a change.org petition in order to try to get some publicity on this issue. The link is below and it will become active after 5 signatures. Please take a moment and sign.

Looks like Nest protect will also get bricked since google home does not yet support the Nest Protect units, which renders even more or my system inoperable.

something needs to be done about this, in CAlifornia it is illegal to not allow users of purchased consumer products to continue to use their products for at least 7 years with options to get them serviced.

We are from Canada and our family has five (the max) houses set up with Nest secure. I was extremely impressed that Google would create a subscription free solution for home security. When I leave the cottage and set the alarm the thermostat automatically goes into Eco mode.  Google has provided a fantastic solution. We get an immediate response on our cell phones if someone accidentally makes a mistake (no more expensive call out charges). Monitored solutions have been rendered obsolete by Google. This is on par with the changes Google made to the advertising industry. So why change and piss off your loyal customer base? I propose that your software developers create Nest Lite for just Secure and the Thermostat. Simplify the code,  rewrite and remove all the third party priority code and place the program in the public domain. Keep us happy Google!

Look we bought the products they are ours to do what we want with especially if you are abandoning them and us. We have a year from now for someone to figure out and make an app for us to be able to keep this awesome system. I’d gladly pay ANY other company then GOOGLE. Come on APPLE save us it would be great press for you to stick it up Googles ass

First, ADT customer service is down right abysmal.  I've had a Nest Secure since 2019 and invested in extra sensors, etc.  I move every couple of years with the military and this system allowed me to setup every house myself in order to protect my family no matter where I lived.  When I moved to Alaska, I even asked ADT if the system would work but they're clueless.  The Nest Secure's wireless monitoring connection is through T-Mobile only.  Well guess who doesn't have wireless service in Alaska...T-Mobile!  So, I had system errors ADT was clueless to resolve and I had to figure it out myself to inform them that is why my system wasn't working properly.  If my home WiFi goes out, there isn't a backup and my family could be at risk.  ADT refers you to their "Google" team and they're just incompetent at resolving issues.  I eventually had to cancel my monitoring service after multiple attempts.  This news is EXTREMELY disappointing.  I understand the hub is only 2/3G compatible and hardware/wireless technology is evolving but I'm happily content with the setup now with it just using WiFi.  Dropping it to force customers into a different ADT system/contract is wrong when the software/setup does what I need now.  I guess ADT wasn't getting their return on investment over the years so, with Google they've come up with this plan to kick us all off our existing systems to monetize new hardware.  Hard pass - nice thing about the 'market' is there are options and Google won't be on the list at all to consider.  Cheers and good riddance!

This is not OK at all!

What abouth the thousands of people outside US who have this?

I have never been happier with an alarm system. Nest Secure is just perfect for me. I have invested roghly 1200 USD in smoke detectors, cameras, sensors etc.

Why not continue with a well buildt brand rather ned its life? NEST app is much more userfriendly and easy to use than the "messy" Google home app.

This is an awful decision but expected by a company that has done nothing but make bad decisions for years now. Will any of these comments actually make a difference? Not a chance. Stubborn Google C-Suite execs won't change their mind after they make a stupid decision because "it is the children who are wrong," but hey, prove me wrong.

The fact we can't use these locally outwith Google's eco-system effectively means we've bought an expensive paperweight and been strung along all this time expecting we'd be able to keep our existing systems without needing to move along to Google's expensive second screw up partnership with ADT.

Brinks was AWFUL, and what we should expect better from ADT? Sure. How many millions did Google get to SCAM its customers? 😕

This is absolutely terrible. I have nine cameras. It will cost over $1000.00 to replace every camera. These cameras still work very well and capture everything I need. I am asking Google to reconsider the plight of these systems and keep the cameras in full operation.

terrible decision from Google and not customer savvy. I will not replace with Google given a non customer centric decision.

I am very disappointed. I bought over a thousand dollars of Google Nest equipment for my security system. I contacted ADT this morning and they are not suppporting Canada for the Goggle Nest Secure replacement. That means I am going to loose my entire investment. I used to be fan of all Google products. But now, they gave me a good reason to not buy any more Google products. I am asking Google to reconsider their decision. I hope there will be a class action lawsuit.

Be aware that if you have any Dropcams that you would like to get the replacement Nest Cam for it will need to have been active on the network and linked to your account sometime in the 28 days prior to them releasing this replacement program notice to be "eligible" for the replacement program. If this is not the case, then Google considers you not eligible at all, and won't honor the replacement. This is all according to a series of chat reps that I was bounced between today.

There is nothing in the Community blog post announcement or any other help support articles that mention in plain language or legal language what eligibility is required. In fact, rather clearly they do state," If you are a current Nest Aware subscriber, we will be offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired) on us to help you keep your home secure. If you are not a Nest Aware subscriber, we're offering a 50% discount toward a new Nest Cam (indoor, wired).

I contacted Google Support to inquire about the replacement, and after be transferred around to 7 different chat agents who I was told all were either supervisors or a dedicated team for the issue I was asking about, no one could do anything other than repeat the line that since my camera had not been active in the preceding 28 days, my camera was not eligible for replacement and there was no offer they could extend to me.

In the meantime, if anyone actually received the email for the replacement Nest Cam for the soon to be bricked Dropcam, and doesn't plan on using the promo code, perhaps you might consider sharing it with someone....

Hey Google, Amazon and other sites are still allowing these items to be sold on their sites. You have screwed us. Isn't that enough, or are you happy to see others continue to throw money away.  Shame on you and your company.  Stick with search and stay away from everything else.

I spent several thousand dollars on the Nest Secure system for 2 different locations.

A Google Rep even came to my home to present the system sometime in 2018 or 2019.

Now Google will disable my system??? That's a big F.U. from Google to it's Customers

I will NEVER EVER buy another Google system. Not in my lifetime.

Google has an obligation to Service or Sell the Nest Secure system.

Re: $200 redemption coupon mess (yes, I'm aware I won't be able to participate in class action if I use it)

Google support reports they are aware the coupon codes don't work.

You have to chat online with a support person & provide screenshots of 1) your email & 2) error message that the coupon doesn't exist before they will issue you a new code.

I was finally issued a new code & placed order for other items with $200 discount.

It seems pretty ridiculous that Google is aware of the issue w/the code for the last week & hasn't fixed it (almost seem intentional to avoid paying out $200 discounts....)

This is crazy ! I invested in sensors and Next X Yale Lock. Now they are only giving us 2 sensors and we’ll probably have to purchase more. On top of it I can’t access my cameras, doorbells and Lock on the ADT+ App. Trying calling Google they told me they can’t resolve , called ADT they don’t know how to resolve so now all the money I invested going into the trash!
thanks so much Google! Should’ve gone with Ring!

Im spending oodles of time trying to find out something that SHOULD be simple. I PAY for nest and get 3 hrs of video. I want to DOWNLOAD ALL of the video at once, not every little minute. It is way too time consuming. Ive found threads on this TAKEOUT thing, but Nest does not show up on takeout. I'm of a short fuse to return this gadgetry if I cant get yet another expensive piece of crap electronic thing NOT TO WORK.

New Nest, not good.  I just got my 2 free NestCam Gen 2 to replace my soon no longer supported DropCams.  My set up includes multiple older drop cams plus many Nest Cams IQ-4K.

First, the new NestC Gen2 is crappy compared to earlier models.  I noticed in the google nest store there are no longer any 4K models only 1080P.  Additionally, the new models don't have a usb plug into the back, they are hard wired, so when the cable gets damaged (happened to my netcams several times) there is no way to replace it, the whole camera is useless.  Moreover, the Gen2 is actually has a much narrower field of view then even my old DropCam pro, let alone the Nest IQ-4K.

Second, even worse then the camera, you are forced to use the bloated google home app instead of the Nest app if you install the gen2 nest cams.  The google home app is very slow to load when you have multiple cams, they don't all load so you have to hit "retry" to refresh each.

Worse still, the Googe home app camera view has no drag and review video capability for NestCam IQ-4K cams, like in the nest app where you can drag fast forward-like through history (time machine style), it only has point in time short captures so you can't review the whole day by dragging the timeline like nest app.  In google home you have to pick out individual snapshots and can only scroll review within those short 1-2 minute snap shots.  Impossible to find anything that way.

For the new Nest G2 Cams there is still a draggable timeline, but in only works in new g2 cams, and the video doesn't move as you drag the timeline, you can only drag to a new position on the timeline while looking at a static picture; how **bleep**ty is that?.  Very disappointed, this really sucks.  Gonna be looking to replace entire 15 cameras soon, and probably not gonna be google due to the slow g home app.

Still so pissed off over this whole thing. I do agree with someone from a couple post ago complaining about it here will get nowhere they clearly don’t care about us or they wouldn’t be doing it. We should find a thread on or create one on Twitter maybe that will get us more publicity. I’m not selling any gear or investing in another until next year.  Google should make good and at least create a standalone app to let us continue to use our products or release the code to open source. Also hoping there will be someone who can “jailbreak” and open it up for us or a company like Starling.

This is horrible, not even close to an upgrade.  The new ADT hardware is a downgrade from the Nest Secure system.  It doesn't have the extremely convenient NFC key fab feature, and it is based on their old failed DIY hardware.  They are only supporting the original hub package and any additional sensors are not supported.  So they expect you to completely discard your perfectly functional security system after 3 years just so they can try to force you into an ADT plan.  Horrible, horrible, horrible, I would suggest anyone looking at Google Home hardware consider a different brand.  Will NEVER recommend Google to anyone.

jeffmondick
Community Member

So it's one thing to replace existing hardware and systems with new technology. That I get. It's another thing to handle it the way it's been handled.

Google statwd that the Best Secure Device is going to cease functioning. They offered a like for like replacement and as an "once rice" two new devices to add to the system. That clearly states that the motion and two window detectors are "extras" meant to help with the PITA to switch to the new system as well as an incentive to stay with the new system.

They are not being honest with the rest of the message. In fact, they still have not officially stated that the Yale locks, the Neat Detect sensors, and the Nest Detects (smoke detectors) will not work. This thread is the closest thing to any confirmation, there has been no official communication from Google or ADT on this. At the very least this needs to be better communicated. This is unacceptable.

Yeah, sign me up for the class action lawsuit if these components are either no longer working or not replaced. This is absurd. The people that are saying that we "gave up our rights" don't know how the law works, BTW.

We invested a lot of money into the Google Smart home ecosystem - this is a huge disappointment and if this isn't made right Google has lost my business.

15 Nest Detects, 2 Yale locks, 2 Protects,l that just don't work anymore with no communication. That's messed up.

VTron21

@jeffmondick

The announcement is very clear this only effects Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, Nest Secure (Nest guard, Nest detect, and Nest Tags), and Works with Nest.  Your Nest Yale locks and nest Protects will continue to function.

jeffmondick
Community Member

No, the communication is not very clear at all. It says nothing about the Nest Detect devices, which all no longer function with the new system. The communication could also be a lot more clear, stating that the Nest Protect devices, the wired Doorbell Cameras, and the Yale Locks will function within the Nest App and Google home app but not intl the ADT app. Your statement is very incorrect.

WILLDE

So I got “all” the stuff ADT was supposed to send me i created an account with them linked my google account . They sent me 2 sensors even thou I had more thru Google Nest. Still can’t link my cameras, doorbells and Nest Yale to the App so I can use everything together. Now they are saying I have to purchase the Nest Aware subscription from ADT even thou I already have and paid thru Google. Every time I call Google they can’t fix anything I call ADT they can’t fix. They are playing the “you for call them “ game !!! This F****** frustrating and ridiculous how they are playing with us and making us wasting our time and patience teuto figure this out ! Again with all this money invested in something and now what?? Who knows, cuz clear both of the companies have no idea 🤷🏽‍♂️

Tekkie

@VTron21

You are very much mistaken about Yale locks and the rest, and to mute your point event further, can you set a code in your Google Home App on the Yale lock? Can you assign users? Can you assign a schedule? Are you able to disarm the alarm with the code on the lock without the Nest app setup? Can you silence or get a notification without the Nest App if your Nest Protect goes off? No you cannot do any of those things with the Google Home App (nor ADT app!).

Sign me for the class-action lawsuit.  But it would be cheaper (and much smarter) for Google to

1) Update Nest Secure so it functions with ADT or anyone else without bricking everything like it does now with Brinks. You can remove 2G/3G structure - in 2023 we all have excellent and dependable Wi-Fi. Or upgrade the Nest Secure hub to current standards - you can even make money here.

2) Get better leadership to address this situation; and try to retain its most loyal clientele base by any means necessary.  Think about it - you have the most expensive gadgets that we buy... Do you think after this that any techie will dish out so much money on Google related products?

3) Leave all as-is working via Wi-Fi - we deserve at the minimum this option.

4) Don't be evil... I only bought more stuff because you said the Google Home app will inherit ALL of the functionality of a retiring Nest App. This is obviously an evil lie, especially since most of us have been juggling two apps for so long in the promise that Google's Home App will prevail. Do better.

@jeffmondick

@Tekkie
Literally at the bottom of the announcement.

"Does this announcement affect other Google Nest products or services?

This announcement only affects Dropcam, Dropcam Pro, Nest Secure, and Works with Nest. This announcement does not affect other Nest Cam models. If you need help determining if the camera you own is a Dropcam or Dropcam Pro, please refer to this support article."

It also doesn't mention that the Nest App is going away.  And if it is, they have the time to move the required functionality to the Home App.

The helpful ADT rep assured me that all my IQ cameras and protect smoke alarms will work in the ADT+ app. True or false?  Yale lock?  Still need to maintain Nest Aware subscription for video?  So much uncertainty.

trying to weigh the options of salvaging nest hardware with ADT vs (crappy) alternatives?

Dangee

If 3G going away is the problem it can be solved with a firmware update. My car manufacturer did it (Hyundai) and it works fine.

I think they don't make enough to support it after the sale so they are ditching us. Also, as everyone is seeing, it is too technical (sad I know) for them to provide customer support. I experienced this with a doorbell case that took me writing to person in Google management that had been recently appointed to manage customer support for Nest at the time.

It’s funny how they keep telling us that everything will work fine but then they don’t even know what to do and how to do when you contact them. They blamed on having Google Nest aware subscription , so we chave to buy from them and when you try to give ADT+ to use the cameras and all this is what it says: all those item la on the bottom are not compatible meaning we got screw!

jeffmondick
Community Member

@VTron21 are you a Google employee? You keep getting told that the email is incorrect you continue to double down. At that absolute least it could be more clear. The Nest Detect Devices do not work. Fact. The wired doorbell cams do not work with ADT. Neither do the smoke detectors (Nest protect). All facts. What's wrong with you?

VTron21
Community Member

@jeffmondick I never said they would work with ADT.  I said, and so did Google, that would not stop working as they Currently do.  You are the one thinking that some how these other Nest devices would some how be transitioned to ADT.

But you also seem to think that the Nest detects are some separate product.  They are part of Nest secure so of course they will stop working. How is that not clear.

My understanding of Nest Camera's will work with ADT for professional monitoring if you get the Nest aware subscription though ADT (something not currently available with brinks).  The door bell function would still be through the Nest app and/or Google home app. Heck my nest doorbell battery doesn't even show in the Nest app.

Edit: my ADT alarm arrived today, so I'll know more about the camera integration once I set it up.

@VTron21  you crack me up. A basic tenet of communication is that things are spelled out clearly, which they are not, especially based on the thread here. But no, you are correct and everyone else is wrong. Stop simping for Google. The communication wasn't clear. We are getting different answers from ADR and Google, ne in cases no answers. And you haven't even set your system up and you're commenting like an expert. Seriously, grow up.
