Dropcam and Dropcam Pro planned obsolence - BS

 I received the following email yesterday and called Google support to verify it.  The person I spoke to was very apologetic but could only repeat the party line.  They are willing to give owners a WIRED Nest Cam replacement.  But only 2 no matter how many you have. Why?    Since we know they are saving money by abandoning the Dropcam they should pass some of that savings to the people they are hurting by their decision.

To be clear on April 8 2024 your dropcam will stop working. Not only that you will lose all of your saved videos on Nest Aware.  Better download them asap.

"We are proud to have launched Dropcam over 10 years ago, when it was one of the first smart cameras on the market. As we look at what it takes to support your home security needs going forward, it has become increasingly challenging to continue to update these products given the early hardware. So we made the difficult decision to stop support for Dropcam starting April 8, 2024.

We know this is inconvenient and fully understand that changing the technology in your home is hard. To help with this transition and show our appreciation, as a Nest Aware subscriber we’re offering you a Nest Cam (indoor, wired), on us.1 This wired Nest Cam is part of our next generation of cameras with more helpful features like HDR and built-in intelligence that can differentiate between a person, animal, and vehicle, and send you an alert. We hope you will continue to trust us to help you at home".

What this means for you.

  • Until April 8, 2024, all current features will remain available, and you can continue to use your Dropcam as you do now.
  • Starting April 8, 2024, your Dropcam will no longer work. You won’t be able to use the Nest app to check the status of your Dropcam, view live streams, receive notifications, or change settings.
  • Your Nest Aware subscription will not automatically be canceled. If your Nest Aware subscription covers all the devices in your home, it will continue to work with any other Nest cameras in your home.

@golfjr

These 10-year-old older Dropcams that are being phased out are wired cameras for power (https://support.google.com/googlenest/answer/9244112) but use Wi-Fi. Do you want Google Nest to replace them with battery cameras?

I corrected my original.  When they said wired I thought that meant CAT5 or CAT6 or POE+.  This would

be like many other camera manufacturers.
