Google Nest Doorbell (battery) - Events only register when camera open in Home App

We have a Google Nest Doorbell battery which we installed a week ago. At the start the doorbell registered all people coming and going no matter if they rang the doorbell. After the first day this no longer happens. Only if I open the camera livefeed will we get an event registered if people walk past the camera. 

I tried unplugging the camera and charging it and put it back in. It then registered the event of me mounting it, but nothing after that. 

I've changed the events to include everything and not just people, still no luck. I've also changed the sensitivity for awakening in video settings, tried all 3 settings and still no luck. 

What are we doing wrong here?

Here is a good article you can review on how an event works, and its features depending on the type of subscription you might have.

Make sure to get the features set up and notifications on the Google Home app.
