Wired Nest doorbell depleting when no internet

Hello, there was another thread on this topic, but it has been closed. I am having Internet problems at my home, and I’m losing Internet connectivity intermittently. While I await a technician to come and troubleshoot, my wired nest doorbell  battery keeps dying when the Internet is not connected. The Wi-Fi network works just fine and the doorbell stays connected to my Wi-Fi network, however, since there is no Internet behind this connection for whatever reason the battery quickly depletes and then dies. When the Internet comes back on, the battery begins to charge, and eventually the doorbell functions again.

 

I do not understand why the battery will die when there’s no Internet. The Wi-Fi network is working. I should be able to use the camera while connected to my local net work, regardless of whether there is Internet.

 

Is there any known solution for this? My concern is that if I’m away from home for a period of time, and my Internet goes out, and I am unable to reset my modem, the battery on the doorbell will die, and I will have no way of monitoring my property. Does not having an Internet connection cause the camera to just run continuously and not charge itself?

Thanks for reaching out here in the Community. To know more about this issue, I’d like to confirm, is your Nest Doorbell wired in your house or do you just use it with its battery? What is the battery percentage of the unit? The loss of Wi-Fi Connection shouldn't affect the battery consumption of your Nest Doorbell. What is the weather now in your area? The battery drains faster in cold weather or if there's a lot of activity (even if the activity isn't saved as a clip).

it’s wired to the house doorbell so it charges the battery when the Wi-Fi is connected.

 

it’s warm in Arkansas right now, 70s low.

 

The battery will charge up when the Wi-Fi is connected to the internet. When my modem goes offline, a few hrs later I get a notification that the best battery is dead. Turn modem back on and within the hour I am up again and battery is recharging.

Hello Gstrub,

 

Thanks for getting back to us. The Nest Doorbell does not get charged from your Wi-Fi router's internet connection. Wi-Fi connection is wireless and your Nest Doorbell gets its power from your house. When your doorbell has about 24 hours of battery left, it will automatically switch to doorbell only mode. It will only send notifications when someone presses the doorbell button. Other features will be turned off to conserve battery.

That is my point, for whatever reason when the internet cuts off (Wi-Fi signal still fine), the battery completely drains. It starts charging itself from the house again once the modem is reset and internet is re established. 

I have never gotten a low battery warning until I started having internet problems. Xfinity is working on fixing it, but until then, the battery keeps dying on the doorbell even though it is hard wired. I can’t figure out why or how to fix it.

I appreciate your response. Do you still remember when and where you purchased your Nest Doorbell? In case it's still within buyer's remorse, have you tried reaching out with them and asking for options about your concern?

I purchased it from ADT when they installed my alarm system last year.

 

There is another thread on this community which was closed before any solution was written and it describes the same behavior. Right now the internet is on and the battery says 2 percent and zero hours and is “plugged in.” When the internet goes off it will die.
