Chromecast audio won't factory reset

I have a chromecast audio that I've used for many years. I moved house. I'm trying to set up the same chromecast audio. I have it plugged into the original google USB power adapter that I've always used. The google home app is giving me a message saying, "This device was previously set up by a different user. Please factory reset the device," so I have not been able to use it.

If the message is correct, then I must have set the device up with a google account that I no longer have.

I found the instructions for resetting the chromecast audio, but the device does not respond in the way that the instructions describe. I hold in the button for a long time (up to 60 seconds) but the LED never changes colour nor flashes. It just stays solid white.

I would be very grateful for any advice.

Possibly stupid question: I've had this device a long time. Is it possible that google's current reset instructions are for a newer model?

I've solved this issue.

@ByronP, the instruction in that link for factory resetting did not work for me.

I tried rapidly pressing and releasing the button on the chromecast audio. I noticed that on every fourth press the LED turned orange, and turned white again on release. Eventually, I managed to hold the button down on the fourth press.

press - release - press - release - press - release - press...hold

The LED flashed very rapidly and eventually turned solid white again. I let go of the button. The LED intermittently turned orange and back to white, eventually settling down into solid white again.

I used Google Home to set up the Chromecast Audio and it worked. (Whoop!!) No message about factory resetting. I am now streaming audio again. 😁

I'm having similar problems. I have a chromecast audio that I haven't used for a couple years or more. The device is probably 7 years old. New wifi and phones since used last. I'm able to get phone to recognize Device, but won't connect. I'm hoping someone can help.

Hi Folks,

Thank you for posting. I'm sorry that the Chromecast Audio won't connect. Help's here.

There are a few articles to check and troubleshoot the issue. Please review and try to factory reset your Chromecast Audio. Make sure to press the button for more than 60 seconds and wait until the light shows (you may need to keep pressing for a long time given the device settings).

After that, please set it up again. Here are the instructions to set up your Chromecast Audio.

Let me know if you need more help.

Regards,

Byron

Idk whats up with jhicky.... but I've been having the exact same problem as well! I can't get it to factory reset for anything! I can hold the button forever n ever rapidly press it a million different times... if I hold the reset button b4 plugging it in it will stay solid white forever ( but definitely STILL not connected to internet) but otherwise it stays solid orange no matter what I do or what situation I change around differently! I have a optical cord adapter thingy, or a aux to hdmi adapter, or a aux to USB, aux to usb-c adapter, I have 2 different  ethernet adapters one from ugreen that works w/other cc's and Google minis the other is from my cc ultra I've tried using my phone to do usb tethering, my phone also has ethernet tethering won't work ethier Hotspot, wifi direct, or bluetooth won't connect to it if I try BT apps to try n connect it'll say it's a null device! Tried connecting it to other cc's or Google minis hoping they would provide it with w.e update no matter what I try I have 0 luck! Including google customer support! While difficult to get someone that speaks english fluently, pretty much after they tell me to turn it off and back on they're official stand on it is to tell me SORRY YOUR #**bleep**OuttaLuck! Even though there is no physical damage to my device ( I'm sure someone @Google or just someone who is extremely tech savvy could probably plug it in they're computer see w/e the issue is and fix it by clicking a button or two and fdreset  in probably 5 min or less! But! I'm not a computer genius or rich enough to pay triple what they're worth off ebay... I've done a SUPER EXTRA ridiculous amount of research on the internet in search OF an answer to get it streaming again and it's driving me NuckingFuts! And even more so because I SERIOUSLY feel like google laughs about these situations (not n secret) But pretty much right to our faces (so 2 speak) Examples all over this entire site anytime anyone inquires about doing something they don't want ppl to be able to do they immediately hurry up and lock the thread as quickly as they possibly can! So that no1 can offer a workaround or offer something helful ! Google can't have any helping someone what so ever! Like the so called ""expert""who replied on this one ! Obviously didn't even read the guys post instead of trying to be helpful apologizes, gives a useless default answer and now especially since I got on here RANTING THE TRUTH, he's gonna say something else that's not helpful at ALL then insist that he has to LockThe THREAD because the guy isn't REPLYING... (it wouldn't suprise me if they somehow are blocking his responses) because FR they for W.e reason do not want anyone to have a working chromecast Audio anymore! I seriously think they cut some secret side deal with Sonos to sabotage everyone's cca for a sweet payoff or something! And the only ppl who still have working ones are ppl who were smart enough to set theirs up with a VPN!... excuse me for sounding like a  Conspiracy theorist. But I seriously feel like they go out of their way. To not help people solve this problem. Like they go out of their way. 2 not tell people how to send their video to one device and audio to their groups. [ You have to cast Youtube music first to a Chromecast. Ultra, and then add the rest of the devices on Home app. Then, once you've added the audio group. After first casting to the ultra, you can then cast from an app like netflix or youtube like it's one device] They go out of their way to tell you that it's not possible.

Even though it is! You also have to turn off all communication And sharing with google Or 2 minutes later, they'll stop the stream.!... Now next thing you know, they stopped reproduction for the Chromecast, ultra.

God forbid you could get Video on one Google device and send your audio to your other Google devices!!!.... To anyone reading ness, I be amazed if they don't delete this post so that people can't read it.

But if by some miracle, it doesn't get deleted... If someone knows away to get my Chromecast, audio working, I would seriously be eternally grateful and my undying love is forever and ever!!! Please feel free to email me a solution. My email address is w###########r @@ Gm@1L *dot* Ko
