Erratic Chromecast remote behavior

Not sure why but all of a sudden I am having issues with a chromcast and its remote that was working perfectly fine for over a year. Now, after about 5-10 minutes the remote will behave as though someone is pressing all the way right or left on the remote and will not let me do anything and will begin to fast forward/rewind content until I restart it completely. I have tried replacing the batteries, purchasing a new remote, and doing a factory reset on the chromecast and it will still do the same thing after a few minutes. I've tried it on several other tvs and it will eventually do the same thing on all of them. at my wits end and about to just toss this thing in the trash and call it a day.

is there any kind of solution? I have tried updating both the remote and chromcast with no luck.

Hey there seg,

I am sorry to hear that your Chromecast Voice Remote is acting up! I can imagine this is pretty frustrating, so I'd be happy to help you out. First thing, if you haven't already, is to unpair and re-pair the remote. Here is how to do that:

Go to  Settings Remotes and Accessories Chromecast Remote Forget.

If that doesn't resolve the issue, factory reset the remote itself:

  1. Check that the batteries in the remote have remaining charges.
  2. Remove the batteries from the remote.
  3. Press and hold the Home button.
  4. While holding the button, reinsert the batteries.
  5. Hold the button while the LED light is solid.
  6. When the light starts pulsing, release the button.

I look forward to your response, and if you have any other questions or concerns for me, please let me know!

Best regards,
Jeran

Hello, sorry for the delayed response. To answer your question I did try those steps in addition to hard resetting the chromecast. It seems to fix the issue temporarily but then appears again randomly several minutes later and doesn't fix itself until I turn the device on and off and then the process repeats. It seems to also affect navigating tv menus and it seems like any and all presses of a remote button are sent almost non-stop. I have had the same problem with two different chromecasts and two different remotes. The issues seemed to have started after a remote firmware update because prior to this both remotes were working fine with no issue for several months.

at this point I have ordered an additional remote which hopefully does not have the new remote update in hopes of a solution.

the remote refuses to pair and I have no idea how to make it pair even after hard resetting the chromecast and remote several times. it just gets stuck in searching for accessories and lists the remote but then refuses to move past that screen until at some point the remote disappears from the list and it continues to search for it again.

at this point I am calling it a wash and just switching to a different family of devices. I can't afford to keep ordering new remotes and devoting this much time getting something that is supposed to be a simple pairing procedure to work properly.

Hi seg,

I'm sorry to hear about your experience. If you have a new Chromecast Voice Remote and you would like to pair it with your existing Chromecast with Google TV (4k), please press the button at the back of the Chromecast with Google TV (4k) device for 1 second for the pairing to start. Once paired, let me know if the same issue will persist.

I appreciate your help here, Jeran and Juni.

Thanks,

Jennifer
