I'm getting ads on YouTube when casting to Chromecast (2nd Generation) despite I have Premium.

Stefax
Community Member

I'm getting ads on my Chromecast (2nd Generation) and I do not know why.

This problem started a couple of days ago when I started getting ads on YouTube-videos on my (Chromecast 2nd gen) even though I have Youtube Premium Lite (It is a cheaper version of Premium but the difference is that it only removes ads, it is so far only available in Europe). This has never been an issue before.

I figured this would stop I logged in but when I tried to log in I received this error message:

1761a056-5f69-4bf5-ac54-098846942ae5.jpg

Basically it says in Swedish that I can't log in to this TV but that I can still watch as a guest.

I rarely watch YouTube on anything other than my Chromecast so it would be good to know if I should end my subscription to Premium Lite or if this problem can be solved.

BIG UPDATE: YouTube is now claiming on my post about this on Twitter that this issue has been solved. But from what I see it hasn't because alot of YouTube-users are still commenting on this post and showing photos which clearly shows this is still a problem.

No ads is the only reason for Premium and we use TV with our Chromecast Ultra to watch 90% of the time.

Just cancelled YouTube Premium over this issue.

Then please cancel your YouTube premium sub, as this is the only way to shown Google that this decision should be reversed.

I don't give a **bleep** about  sharing. I don't want people up in my business

Just a reminder that any investment in any google product is a waste.

I have found the solution. I purchased a Roku today and guess what? I'm able to sign into YouTube on Roku and watch my content add free. I know this isn't what everyone wants, but it just highlights the fact that Google is selling a service does it that doesn't actually with on its own devices so this sounds class action territory. There's your solution

Please fix this. Why am I paying for premium if I get ads?

Selea

Amazing.
I have 5 days left of my premium subscription, and now I am getting ADs on ALL of my devides where I am logged in at.

Google does not care, they just exploit.

By now it kinda smells like a deliberate move to output more ad time and being kept under wraps because its illegally questionable or at least very very nasty and evil behaviour. I hope not, I still really hope the reason is something with a loop hole where people could just log in on other peoples devices or a shared premium account loop hole... that would be a believable explanation... but with no public announcements, and nothing fixed in multiple months it kinda starts looking like they just threat their customers as the cattle they are. A couple of hundred cancelled subscriptions are probably not going to compete with the ad revenue the new practice provides. I hope @JenniferV can shed some much needed light on this case and wash the bitterness and doubts away.

It has been months, guys.  Months.

Add this to the list of disappointing issues cropping up in my Google smart home. Getting ads in YouTube even though I pay for premium, IFTTT assistant support has been reduced/broken, the bad/broken nest cam support and poor/confusing/mixed assistant “To do” list support.

As others have suggested you’re better off scrapping Google hardware and just going with something else. They clearly don’t know how to properly support it in the long term several months and this remains broken. What a pain. Why pay for google products if this is what we get? lol.

Yeah it is pretty clear that Google want you to experience their services on their competitors devices, because who in their right mind would upgrade after seeing what they do to older versions. If I were to upgrade, i run the risk of google pulling the same **bleep** in 3 years time.

Where as Apple TV, Roku and fire sticks, all having older versions that are pre 2nd generation chromecast, which are still capable of providing the expected experience of a youtube Premium member.

This actually motivates me to just get a raspberry pi and install pi-hole to stop any ad requests on my router. Then chromecast can't even serve me ads even if they tried. I will pick the best option to avoid ads. If paying for it doesn't do the job, I guess google is just forcing my hand towards a more scorched earth policy.

WTF google stop preventing us from supporting you. I thought you loved money.

Dime

Doesn't work like that. Chromecasts are hard coded to Google's dns servers, running a pihole does nothing. You can try and set static routes to grab all traffic to google IPs and force the traffic internally to your router or pihole address but it often doesn't work and can cause horrendous name resolution issues on your local LAN.

Also a lot of the time the ads are served from the same content servers at the videos you want to watch, so good luck working out how to block that and still have any sort of service. (You can't)

Well I guess I might as well ditch chromecast altogether. They clearly don't want our money. I have only been a premium subscriber for 3 months, I have had my chromecast for years, but the frequency of double ads and unskippable ads got me to finally subscribe to premium. I will just unsubscribe from premium and use my apple tv only while running pihole, so I can truly pull the middle finger to google for doing this. I doubt the Apple tv has those servers hardcoded into googles dns servers. Sure it is great they updated the software to be more like their other console counterparts, but the only reason why having navigation like that was to be able to browse your algorhythmically curated content with your tv remote, and not having to whip out your phone all the time. They essentially made the app better and then removed the part that makes the update actually useful.

I am sorry but using your phone to control it is not a good enough reponse, as it defeats the purpose of having control of youtube on your tv. Can you imagine Netflix or Spotify trying the same thing, the apps would be pointless. What if I am charging my phone, and the charger is in another room? What if I want my kids to watch youtube kids, and I need my phone for other things? Now they can't only be served kids content but they will be exposed to non kids content.  The TV should not need a phone to work as intended, what is this the 50s? its the equivalent of walking up to the tv to change the channel, when you have a working remote right next to you.

inb4 apple isn't any better, cause I know they aren't, but at least it is functional, and has thought out design.

I think they should never updated it to enable us to navigate with a normal remote if they couldn't get the app to sign us in, because then we would never be asking to be able to sign in, because we would just have to settle on using our phones.

We use our phones to change things on tv out of necessity not choice. if we can have remotes we would prefer that imho

Edit: I did find this reddit thread, but i can't test it myself as I haven't actually used pfsense and pi-hole yet, I have just been doing research on improving my home network infrastructure.

Also tested on an old Chromecast 1st generation (the flat one without a cable) and happens there as well. 😖

When will this be fixed, please? Any actual ETA other than “We’re looking into it”?

I’m sincerely considering moving to new hardware and recommending others stay away because of this. Until they added the extra functionality, it was just fine on these controller-less devices. But when they upgraded the app, it got far slower and now buggy (and this is a very bad bug that has lasted far too long).

Here is the same.

Since that update, we can't connect anymore to YouTube on Chrome cast

Maybe I was just "lucky", but I haven't been experiencing video ads (just some ads on the "home" screen which I haven't seen for a few weeks) - until now.  If I cast a video from my phone (signed in to my YouTube Premium account), it plays through fine with no ads... but if I queue a second video, I now get an obnoxious video ad between videos.  I haven't tried sitting through the ad to see if I then get more ads during the second video; I've found that if I hit the "x" in the bottom bar on my phone to clear the queue, the ad disappears - and I can then find and play the next video without any ads.

I can live with getting useless generic "recommendations" on the "home" screen due to the lack of sign-in, as I was mostly casting and queuing videos from my phone anyway (though I definitely did pick something from the recommendations occasionally when they were actually relevant!) - but if I'm now going to get ads between videos when I queue more than one video, that fundamentally changes how I consume content, and not in a way which in any way helps YouTube or the creators whose content I (want to) watch, as I'm no longer going to queue up a few videos and sit back to watch them.  Instead, I'll be more likely to watch content on other platforms which don't actively make paying customers' experience worse for no good reason - and may well join the growing number of people who are ditching Premium in protest, unless this is fixed in the very near future.

Please either re-enable sign-in on the older Chromecast models (including Ultra), or revert them to the old "ready to play" cast receiver which never had any of these problems.  I don't want a new device ("free" or otherwise) I just want the existing device which I paid for to work with the subscription service I pay for - and I'm sure the vast majority of affected users want the same.  I would say that I'd even settle for going back to how it was as recently as yesterday - unable to sign in, but at least able to queue videos from my phone (signed in to a Premium account) without getting any obnoxious video ads - but since it seems that simply not breaking it again seems too much to ask, some actual improvement might at least mean that the next backslide still leaves it in a bearable state!  If there's some sort of issue at the Chromecast level which needs to be resolved before the YouTube receiver "app" can re-enable sign-in, please firstly tell us that that's the problem, and then get it fixed already - it's been months since #ChromecastCantSignIn began, and both Chromecast and YouTube are Google/Alphabet products, so surely there's some way that the two teams can work together to get this sorted?

Is it just me, or has the reply I posted here a couple of hours ago been deleted?  I didn't swear, I didn't post links, I didn't abuse anyone; I simply stated that I've started getting ads if I queue multiple videos, even though I'm casting from a device signed in to my Premium account.  If that (and a request to please give us a proper fix) is no longer allowed to be posted, that's absolutely wild.

Edit: My earlier post seems to have reappeared, just as mysteriously as it disappeared.

This is absurd, I pay for YouTube Premium and I bought a GOOGLE OFFICIAL CHROMECAST, HOW THE HELL AM I STILL SEEING ADS?!?!

This has apparently been an issue for a long time, I feel like if this doesn't get sorted soon, there should be a class action lawsuit.

Same issue here. First time ive seen this after months of youtube premium and casting.

Alpacalorius

We pay for premium and we were getting ads when casting to our Chromecast a month or two ago. It suddenly stopped giving us ads after about a week. But last night it started doing it again. It's not just the fact that we're getting ads, it's also the fact that on a 16 min video it cut in the middle to give us an hour long "ad."  It was skippable but it's still not doing what we pay for

After my main post above, I went through a half-hour live chat with a friendly YouTube support person who genuinely seemed to want to help, but after restarting both the Chromecast and my phone and switching account and back again, they were out of ideas and referred it to a "specialist" - and we're still waiting for the specialist team to come back with a response.  I made sure to mention the "can't sign in" situation and share a link to this thread, but given the responses which others have apparently received on previous occasions, I'm not holding out hope for a proper fix - but hopefully they at least stop the ads (for good, this time) ASAP.

They're not going to fix this, and at this point they're hoping we all buy CCWGTV and shut up about it. I feel like this is almost legally actionable.

Iggy12

Can a Google Official please confirm that THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE ON THE NEW DEVICE?!?! I am at my wits end, and if the new device DOES NOT have this problem, then I will consider getting it. I JUST BOUGHT MY CHROMECAST LAST YEAR so honestly this is absurd, planned obsolescence on crack and seriously considering these shenanigans, google needs to be careful they do not get into legal troubles.

Iggy12

How can a company like Google leave their customers out in the rain like this? We subscribe to YOUTUBE PREMIUM and we purchased OFFICIAL GOOGLE CHROMECAST DEVICES, and we can't get our benefits as premium members, that's messed up. I wish they would just come out and say the older devices are just broken, and that you have to get a new one, at least the honesty would be appreciated. Sorry to the community managers, but I'm going to be flaming this thread until the issue is fixed.

I have never used the sign in feature, I have always casted directly from my phone to Chromecast, and as of 2 days ago, I receive ads after the first video in the queue and every video after that, until I disconnect, reconnect and then the process repeats. This has never happened before, but as I am seeing now, Google has been aware for MONTHS and is just ignoring this manufactured issue and hoping we all just upgrade and be quiet.

Same issue, which started just a few days ago for me. I have never used the Chromecast sign in feature or the "remote" feature in the past (too annoying, I'm already signed in on my phone) but now I'm being served ads even though I'm signed into my premium account on the android youtube app, and only using the app to select and control video playback. The ads make everything unwatchable. Please fix this.

I have this issue.

YouTube premium account.

My phone has two Google accounts, one of them has premium.

When I play YouTube video on my Chromecast using my Google home I sometimes get ads.

The assistant in the Google home app on my phone is using my Google account that has YouTube premium. When I lost YouTube under the same account I have premium.

I've been using YouTube Premium and Chromecast for two years now, and within the past few days I've just now started getting ads whenever I Chromecast from my computer's Chrome internet browser (while logged into Google/YouTube) to my Chromecast device. It happens between videos, when I am Chromecast'ing playlists.

Just adding my name to the list. I also just started having this issue recently after months of having no ads.

My experience seems to be the same as the other posts. I cast from my phone (logged in to premium account) to my ChromeCast Ultra (Firmware version 1.56.281627). I will add that I have gotten some mid-roll ads, not just pre-roll.

I remain hopeful this problem will be resolved, being it happening over the holiday weekend in the US. Though if the only solutions remains to buy a new streaming device, I certainly won't be buying another Google product.

Also having the same issue.  Functionality I'm paying for is impacted, not alright.  Issue began a few days ago.

Spoke with support, they can't do anything and won't offer a credit without cancelling my account entirely and refusing to escalate the issue if they process a credit.  Screw it, cancelled my Premium and will just use another service.

Did support give any hint of the root problem?

I am trying to remain hopeful this is a bug and not some planned obsolescence.

No. Just that other people were experiencing it.

Me too very frustrating. Seems the chromecast is "not signed in" and "can't sign in"

I tried everything including signing into YouTube on chromecast with the GUI remote and even though it's obviously my account, the chromecast seems in guest mode. I've struggled with this for weeks and multiple times I day I "leave feedback" and send help tickets and for months now no help. Finally at last I am posting here frustrated. Tens of thousands of people are struggling with this. Do something

If it helps, YouTube app it seems to work fine on Chromecast with Google TV (the actual name of it, it comes with a remote control). Others have reported that it works on Roku as well as Apple TV, too. It seems to affect all Chromecast devices (i.e. essentially all Google-built hardware except their latest generation one, naturally).

I don't understand why they brought the Youtube remote function to older chromecasts if they can't support signing in to the app (which is odd by itself). Leave the new functionality for the new hardware and revert the older Chromecasts to the 'Ready to Watch' screen, which worked simply fine!!

I’m getting commercials on the latest google with chromecast. I have a premium account. What’s the point of having a premium account, if I’m, getting commercials?!?!?!

somewhere at google, a product manager got promoted because chromecast 281627 shows 20% more ads
