IP Address shows IPV6 and IPV4

My google tv with Chromecast sometimes has problems connecting and staying connected to the internet via Wi-Fi. It will sometimes say connected, no internet. I believe that this is because the IP address being used by the Chromecast has both IPV6 and IPV4 addresses listed on the network and internet configuration page. The router has ipv6 turned off, and has to stay off or I have other issues. I thought that this GTVwCC did not support IPv6 at all. I can’t find any way to disable the dual listing of ip addresses. But I do believe that sometimes this is causing an issue. I must say that other times there are no problems at all. Any suggestions? Please do not say to report this to google, etc. I am looking for people who have had the same issue and found a solution. Thank you.

Hi KenR9,

Thanks for posting here in the Google Nest Community. It is the router that assigns IP addresses to each device that connects to its network. It is usually random (last octet), depending on the availability of IP address slots that the router can provide. The only time a device (Chromecast device, smartphone, computer, etc.) receives a specific IP address is if it’s set (static IP) within the router’s settings. Since network issues are complex, let’s isolate them first by disconnecting the Chromecast device from your WiFi and connecting it to your mobile hotspot. Observe if the same behavior occurs. The objective is to know if it’s network-related or the actual Chromecast device. We can then break down the approach on how to deal with it once we know which one to troubleshoot. Let me know how it goes.

Cheers,

Kimy, thank you for replying. I am aware of how the router works. I have set the Chromecast to static IP and entered the proper values that the router provided on the first DHCP connection. This allows the Chromecast to connect faster and more reliably and without ambiguity. As I said, IPv6 is disabled on my router, so I do not understand why the ip address that Chromecast lists on the network configuration page shows both a ipv6 and ipv4 address, the latter being the one I set up in he static mode, and which agrees with the routers DHCP table. Like I said, the Chromecast always connects, but sometimes says “no internet”. This could occur, if say,  the time settings did not agree. So I believe it to be this ipv6 issue.  I have only the router to connect to, do not have a mobile hot spot.

Hello KenR9,

Thanks for your reply. The Chromecast device is intended to work on a regular home WiFi setup (non-complex WLAN). It doesn’t require a static IP address setup. Try to remove the static IP assignment and do a factory reset on your Chromecast device. Compare the connection and observe how it goes with and without static IP assignment. Some users usually perform a factory reset on the actual router, but we don’t suggest this, especially if the user is not really familiar with how and what to do. Obviously, you’re knowledgeable about this, so I’m sure you can figure this out. Let me know how it goes.

I assure you my router is a home set up, nothing complicated here! I used to use dynamic IP (opposite of static setting in Chromecast) and it worked fine, but I found the static setup more reliable. Nevertheless, I can change the setting back, but I still have the issues caused by an ipv6 ipaddress appearing in the Chromecast above the ipv4 ip address. It is too bad that Chromecast does not allow me to delete the ipv6 entry. I also have no idea how it got in there, since I am under the impression that this hardware doesn’t even support ipv6. Also seems like Chromecast could be more specific with error “connected, no internet”. I a, not really interested in doing factory resets. So I thank you for your thoughts, and I will go on with the situation the way it is, which is unpredictable. It is most annoying to be using the Chromecast for a few hours, leave for a while, and come back to find it not working. At this point, unplug electricity. But when I reconnect, it doesn’t work. Btw I have scanned Wi-Fi channels and picked the strongest, least interference one.

Hi there,

I understand your hesitation in trying the factory reset or attempting a mobile hotspot. If you have a workaround that works for you, I guess that’s good. But in the event that you find it insufficient anymore, kindly try the steps I suggested. Hopefully, other users that have the same static IP settings as you can share what works for them here. Let us know if you have any other concerns.

Thanks,

Kimy
