Plays wrong song after naming correct song

Kylem
Community Member

Recently when I ask my Google Home to play a song ("play [song] by [artist] on Spotify"), it will respond with "alright, playing [the song I requested by the correct artist]." Moments later, it begins to play a song that either has a similar title by a different artist, or a different song by the same artist. This has happened multiple times over the past few weeks, but never before then.

Hi Kylem,

That certainly hasn't been easy for you ― let’s check this out.

A few questions: What Google Nest speaker are you using to play music? Do you have a premium subscription on the music services you mentioned? For more information, check out the links below:

Keep me posted.

Best,

Dan

Thanks Dan!

So far, this has happened on both my original Google Home, and on my Nest Hub Max. I do have a premium subscription for Spotify linked to my Home account that I was using in all instances.

It's not consistent - I just tried it again for fun, and my request played correctly. I'd say this issue only shows up 25% of the time (though I'd certainly like it to be 0% of the time!)

Hey there,

Understood. Could you try reinstalling your Spotify and Google Home app? Once done, unlink and relink your Spotify account. Let us know if that help.

Thanks,
Alex

I agree, I have a very similar problem.  Using "Google Home", "Google Nest Hub", and "Google Nest Mini" devices.  The assistant verbally confirms the correct song by the correct artist, but then Spotify plays completely the wrong song, often entirely unrelated (wrong artist, wrong song, etc).   This has started happening with marked increase in frequency in just the past few weeks, so something definitely changed, and it is very frustrating because I have found no workaround.

Google, please fix this.

Hi folks,

@Dan and @Alex, thanks for the help.

@Cadill, Sorry to hear about the trouble. I wanted to follow up and see if I could be of any help. Could you check the my activity section of your Google Home app, then check the commands that got accepted and the response from your Google assistant. Take a screenshot of it then send it to us by updating this thread. Check the steps below.

Check your Google Assistant activity history

  1. Open the Google Home app .
  2. At the top right, tap your account.
  3. Tap My Activity .

Below are the steps on how to upload a photo:

  1. Start a new post.
  2. Click Insert Image.
  3. Choose an image source location.
  4. Follow the on-screen instructions

Also, you can tap the "Drag and Drop" option. Maximum attachment is 5 MB.

Note: Take the screenshot of the one's that you we're encountering the issue.

Looking forward for your response.

Thanks,

Juni

@Juni thanks for the offer to help. Here's a screenshot of a time where I know I encountered this issue:

Screenshot_20221111-153610_Chrome.jpg

The request at 4:48PM pretended as if it was going to play the right song, but instead played something completely unrelated to the song requested / that was confirmed by the Assistant (say it ain't so!). I don't recall the exact song played, I think it may have had a similar title, such as Small Things, and by the wrong artist. This was requested on the Nest Hub Max. The request made at 4:49PM was handled correctly.

Carry me home Juni!

Kyle

Hi folks,

@Cadill, have you tried the steps above?

@Kylem, hats off to you for doing the steps we provided. To bring you home, let's revert one of your Google Nest devices back to its default and original settings to clean it. You must set it back up. Don't forget to reboot everything including your router.

Click this link for the factory reset. I'm thinking let's test it out with your Google Home speaker first then let me know how it goes after you've set it up.

Cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan_A

Thanks for your reply. I think this is just an occasional bug with the way the Google Assistant sometimes interacts with Spotify on Google's home devices. The screenshots of my activity in the Google App just show the assistant accurately interpreting which song I've asked for--Spotify may go on to play the wrong song, but the screenshots don't really show that.

If you have any ability to pass the word to the the Google engineers who work on such issues, that would be helpful.
