Nest Smoke/CO Detector Connection to Nest Thermostats

I just set up a Nest Smoke/CO detector and it connected to one of my two Nest thermostats.  I was able to set up that thermostat (which controls the front part of my house) so that it turns off the heating system if CO is detected.  I went to the other Nest thermostat (which controls the back/bedroom part of the house) and it would only allow me to turn off the system it controls if smoke is detected.  There was no option to set it up for actions when CO is detected.  Is it possible to have one CO detector turn off both heating systems?  Can one detector be connected two to thermostats?

Thanks!

Hi LifeBeach,

I understand your concern. Thank you for allowing us to assist you with this situation.
You can turn on and off the emergency shutoff from the Nest app or from your Nest thermostats with these steps: Enable or disable emergency shutoff.

Nevertheless, I confirmed that it is not possible to use the emergency shutoff functionality with one Nest Protect and two different Nest thermostats with separate heating systems. Here's why:

  • Emergency Shutoff Limitations:
    • This feature relies on Nest Protects being paired with compatible Nest thermostats.
    • It only works with forced-air heating systems, not other heating systems like hot water boilers.
  • Single Nest Protect, Single Shutoff: A Nest Protect can only trigger emergency shutoff on a single-paired Nest thermostat.
  • Independent Systems: Since you have two separate heating systems with two Nest thermostats, they likely operate independently.

    Additional options and suggestions:
  • Multiple Nest Protects: Consider installing separate Nest Protects in areas near each heating system. This would allow emergency shutoff functionality for both systems.
  • Manual Shutoff: In case of a smoke or carbon monoxide emergency, you can still manually turn off both thermostats at the devices themselves.

If you agree, in order to share the information with the department in charge and proceed with improvements, I would appreciate it if you could submit your feedback regarding this situation through this form: Google Nest Feedback
