Everybody is asking for it. There’s so many articles of people complaining about it. House gets too hot then gets too cold. Just make the differential 0.5 degrees F or give us access to control the swing/band. I understand you are trying to be efficient but this is just annoying and people didn’t pay $300 to be uncomfortable in their own house.

Agree, this should be a settable feature +/-3 degrees.  Some people want comfort (they can set it to 0.5, others, like myself, want savings and to extend the life of their unit, so I'd set mine to 2 degrees).    a $150 tstat shouldn't reduce the life of a $10,000 HVAC system because it is constantly cycling the system.  Give the user the flexibility and choose whether comfort or savings is more important.  FWIW, I'm getting rid of my Honeywell, because it is hardwired to 0.5 degrees.    Heat pump is cycling on/off often 6 times an hour.

Seems like most of the people on this thread want to enable smaller variance, but I'm with you I'd like to be able to program in at least 2 degree variation so if it's set at 66 it heats from 64 to 68 then doesn't kick on again until it hits 64. Right now it seems to kick things on with a 1 degree drop and stop after reaching temp or completing a single cycle which ever comes second. It cycles my furnace on more than I'd like and it's costing me $. I'll probably switch if I find a device that lets me set that.

Hey folks,
It looks like we have come to a solution so I'm going to be locking this thread. If you have any other concerns or questions, please feel free to create a new thread.

Have a great day.

I completely agree.  We're preparing to dump our NEST Generation 3 because it takes too long to kick on the heat and the house is just plain cold in many spots.  My Wife keeps turning up the heat to stay warm, which completely screws up the "learning" feature, so we had to turn that off.    I was debating adding a remote sensor, but at this point, that seems like good money after bad because the real problem is the un-adjustable (and overly wide) range that the Nest Gen 3 uses to turn on the Furnace.

I’m experiencing a 3 degree gap actual versus desired before heat engages. This thermometer is too expensive for this differential adjustment feature to not exist. It must be so easy to program. Why does it not exist?

I think that the NEST Thermostat emphasis on "saving energy" has meant that keeping the house comfortable takes a back seat.  NEST advertises that your heat-pump or furnace will last longer because it cycles less frequently using a NEST Thermostat.  Fewer cycles that are each a bit longer to raise the temp by 2-3 degrees is purportedly easier on the HVAC system than a larger number of shorter cycles required to keep the temperatures within .5 degree.   This temperature "swing" is typically not an adjustable number in the programmable thermostats I've used, but yeah, in a NEST, the firmware can be updated, as can the Android or iOS app, to facilitate such an adjustment.  Unless, of course, the actual hardware temperature sensor isn't sensitive enough to report changes that are less than a full degree or more.  I suspect this could be the case given that NEST thermostats all seem to report your room temperature inaccurately.  (another common complaint, but easy to work around that).    I personally am now working on replacing the wires to the Thermostat so I can add a "C" wire, and prepare for a future installation of central A/C.   With a "C" wire, I have a number of choices to replace the NEST with an alternative smart T-Stat that works better for us.

I'm a senior and like to save energy but not at the expense of my comfort.  If I set the Nest heat for 71, it may come on at 69 or 70 and may heat to 72.  That's too big of variance for most adults and especially those of us over 80 years.  I wouldn't think it would be a problem to make the differential adjustable by the user so we could make it comfortable living.  I should have purchased a competitor.

Definitely needed.  Temperature swing makes heater mode very uncomfortable

Please just make this customizable. Even my 8 year old Lux programmable thermostat let me set the swing delta. My Nest Gen 3 is effectively 4 degrees so my set temp is now 70 in order for my home to be comfortable since the furnace won’t cycle on until the ambient temperature reaches 66 which is much too cold here in the Northeast. I had my Lux set for 2 degree swing. This should be a simple setting option. Come on Nest!

We're having the same issue, new thermostat installed (Nest Learning) replacing Honeywell wifi unit and way too wide a temperature band. Our old thermostat did run the furnace more often but the house was a VERY constant and comfortable temp. Now worried about AC being the same!

Did you ever come up with a solution? Yours is the only the I've found so far regarding this problem and it appears there may not be an adjustment for it?

There is a feature that enables/disabled automatic sensing of your presence in the home. If Nest thinks you are away, it sets down the temperature. I turned off this feature and am enjoying much more consistent heating.
