Furnace only stays on for seconds and shuts down

I installed a new learning nest thermostat. I do not get any errors and I checked with customer support to make sure my wiring was correct. When I connect the thermostat my furnace will try to turn on but then shuts off seconds later.  I do have a blue wire in the C connection. When I remove the blue wire the thermostat doesn't work at all.

Hi srcreekside,

Thanks for reaching out. I'm sorry to hear that you're having an issue with your Nest Thermostat. I'd love to know more about this and I have a few questions:

  • What type of Nest Thermostat do you have?
  • How is your Nest Thermostat wired?
  • What is the power reading of your Nest Thermostat? You can find this information by going to Settings > Technical Info > Power.

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

I am installing a nest learning thermostat. I charged the thermostat. It was 3.69V and charged to 3.8 before I tried it again but the problem still occurred. The strange thing is that the red power wire is not reading any power even though my previous thermostat works just fine? I do have a blue C wire that if not connected, I don’t get any reading on the nest. The wiring seems very simple. White to W1, yellow to Y, green to G, red to R1, and blue to C. They are sending me a new base but this is the 2nd one I’ve tried with the same result. I plan to test my power wire when I take it apart again but again I’m puzzled since my previous thermostat works just fine. The blue wire on my previous thermostat was connected to W2 which was for heat though? Any thoughts?

Hi srcreekside,

Thanks for the response. If the blue wire was connected to the W2 terminal on your previous thermostat, it's possible that it is a 2nd stage heating. Could you share a photo of your previous thermostat's wiring? Also, please share the power reading of your Nest Therostat.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,
You are correct the furnace is 12 stage heating. I can't give you a reading of the power because I sent the base back for a replacement. On the nest base, if I wired the red to RH I did get error messages.
In the photo of my current thermostat, The Blue is hooked up to the W1 port, Red to R, White to O, Green to G and Yellow to Y. Is the nest not compatible with a 2 stage furnace?
Thanks, Ellen

Hi srcreekside,

Thanks for sharing the photo of your current thermostat. If you have separate AC and furnace systems, the labels that we need to follow on your current thermostat is the heat / cool labels on your current thermostat and not the heat pump labels. Please try wiring your Nest Thermostat using those labels and let us know the results.

Thanks,

Edward

Hi Edward,

I do not know how you are asking me to wire the nest?? I do not have AC. The nest directs me to wire the base according to the photo I attached. Can you be more specific on how it should be wired??? Is it not compatible with a 2 stage furnace???

Thanks, Ellenthumbnail.jpg

Hi srcreekside,

Thanks for the response. I'm sorry for the confusion. If you would notice on the photo of your previous thermostat that you sent, it says heat pump and heat cool at the top with arrows pointing on the labels of the connectors. Since the HVAC system that you have is not a heat pump, please follow the labels where the Heat / Cool is pointing.

Thanks,

Edward
