Generation 2 thermostat - not triggering furnace to run

I have been using my Nest for many years. Lately it is not signaling the furnace to run. As soon as I spin the dial down to the room temperature and then back up to the set temperature the Nest does signal the furnace. 

in addition, I no longer have the ability to change the temperature with the Nest App. I have not used the App in years.

Sorry for the delayed response but thanks for reaching out to the Google Nest Community. I want to dig deeper into this. 

A few questions — were there recent changes made on your thermostat or HVAC system before this started happening? Do you get a message or a code on the display of your thermostat? Also, what type of system do you have? It would be a great help as well if you could provide a rundown of the steps that you've already tried so we could pick up from there. 

Let's work on your furnace first before moving on to your Nest app.
