Help with getting wires correct for heating + cooling

Good Morning. I have successfully used a Honeywell  sort-of-smart thermostat for years. A four wire setup, the wires were as follows:

G (green) wire to G on the thermostat base

R (red) wire to R on the thermostat base

W (white) wire to W on the thermostat base

B (blue) wire to Y on the thermostat base

I wired the Nest Learning thermostat base how I thought was correct but it told me I had a heat pump with one wire not connected. It suggest I move the blue wire to C on the base, which I did. The system now reports that it is setup for heat only. It works perfectly for heat, but I have a furnace and an air conditioner, which had worked perfectly with the Honeywell thermostat.

The Nest is wired as follows:

Green wire G to G on the base

White wire to W1 on the base

Red wire to RH on the base

Blue wire to C on the base

I would appreciate help in getting this wired so that the cooling will work , as well as the heat working as it currently now does. I have pictures of the two wired baseplates, but do not see a way to upload them for your review. Thank you!

Hi snivvy,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. The wiring of your Nest Thermostat may have been misconfigured after switching from the Honeywell thermostat. The G terminal controls the fan, W1 controls heating, RH supplies power for heating, and Y1 controls cooling, ensuring both heating and cooling functions are operational with the Nest Thermostat. To ensure proper heating and cooling functions, try the following wiring setup:

  1. Green wire (G): Connect the green wire from your HVAC system to the G terminal on the Nest Thermostat base.
  2. White wire (W): Connect the white wire from your HVAC system to the W1 terminal on the Nest Thermostat base.
  3. Red wire (R): Connect the red wire from your HVAC system to the RH terminal on the Nest Thermostat base.
  4. Blue wire (B): Move the blue wire from the C terminal to the Y1 terminal on the Nest Thermostat base.

Let us know if that works.

Best,

Zoe
