Nest e is not powering on- 2 black wire installation

I am replacing the old thermostat in my house which is a Cozy Reed Switch Thermostat with the Nest E Thermostat.  There are two unlabeled black wires that come out of the wall.  After connecting the Nest thermostat to R and W1, it doesn't power up.

Is this the thermostat or the wiring and how can I check?

Hi davidke1116,

Thanks for posting here in the Community forum and for showing interest in our Nest Thermostats. If there's only two unlabled black wires connected on your thermostat, I highly recommend you to reach out to an HVAC pro to check the  wires for you.

Let us know if that helps.

Best,

Zoe

Hi Zoe,

So the older thermostat works fine- is there a way to test the Nest to ensure it is working properly?

Thanks!

Given that this is from a friend's house- do I need to reset it?

Was informed it needed to be charged via USB port- got it charging now and will update once installed.
