Nest thermostat turned heating fully off overnight and didn't come back on

We have a "Display 3.7" model, has been working fine for over a year. We use home assist and have a set schedule that is adjusted by the auto learning feature. It is set to turn to Eco when we're out and back to scheduled temp when we come in. The schedule turns it down to 9 degrees C at 10pm on week nights, and back to 15 degrees in the morning (higher in the evenings.) Occasionally we turn the thermostat up or down manually, from the app or the thermostat itself, but we never turn it off.

Weird thing happened today. Woke up this morning and the house was freezing. Thermostat was set to off. Checked history and it says I turned it off at around 11:30 last night. I 100% did not! Neither did my partner, though he says he did adjust the temp in the app last night, he can't remember what time. Weirdly, checking through history, every change that isn't marked as the automatic schedule is marked as me doing it - even when it was my partner. So I don't know if some automatic processes might also be registering as me?

I've turned it back on and up to 20, and it keeps turning it back down to 15! I've just turned off auto-learning, hopefully that will help.

But I would like to know, what could cause the thermostat to switch to "off" when it's not scheduled to do that?

Hi Purplepooka,

Yikes! There are a few potential reasons why your Nest Thermostat might have switched to "off" when it's not scheduled to do so:

  1. It's possible that someone unintentionally turned the thermostat off manually, either through the app or directly on the thermostat itself. However, since you mentioned that you and your partner did not turn it off, this may not be the case.
  2. Occasionally, thermostats can experience glitches or software issues that may cause unexpected behavior. This can include the thermostat turning off or not following the set schedule correctly. In such cases, a simple restart or resetting the thermostat to its default settings may help resolve the issue.
  3. A temporary power interruption or fluctuation could cause the thermostat to reset or turn off. If this is the case, restoring power or resetting the thermostat should resolve the issue.
  4. It's possible that your Nest Thermostat received a firmware or software update that caused unexpected behavior. In some cases, updates can reset settings or introduce new features that affect the thermostat's operation. Checking for any available updates and ensuring your thermostat is running the latest firmware can help address any potential issues.

Since you mentioned that the thermostat keeps turning the temperature back down to 15 degrees even after you set it to 20, it's possible that there's an underlying issue with the thermostat or its settings. Disabling the auto-learning feature was a good step to see if it helps stabilize the behavior then update us what will happen next.

Best,

Zoe
