Degrading Nest Wifi Endpoint Connections

MikeVee
Community Member

We connect everything in our two story home through the Nest Mesh Wifi.  I also added an additional point to extend the coverage area.  There are a total of 42 devices including windows, ChromeOS, Roku, and Samsung smart tv.  In addition, we also use ring for home alarm.  It seems I have to recycle various points multiple times a week due to degraded connections.  Once I recycle the point, connection is great again (so it doesn't appear to be an interference based issue).  If a fix can not be provided, then I'd like to suggest google offer a scheduled network recycle option in the Nest interface, so I can do a nightly recycle with little to no impact on the two of us working from home every day.

Hello MikeVee,

Thanks for posting — let’s see what’s going on.

Please answer the following: when did this issue start? How many Google Nest Wifi devices are you using in your home? What's your Internet service provider? Is there a switch on your network?

Give these steps a try:

  • If you're using a modem/router combo, set it to bridge mode to avoid double NAT issues.
  • Ensure that there is minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) and that the Wifi points are no more than two rooms apart.
  • Remove any special characters from your network name and password.
  • Turn off IPv6.
  • Change your DNS servers to 8.8.8.8 on your primary and 8.8.4.4 on your secondary servers.
  • Unplug the power from your modem and Google Nest Wifi devices for 2 minutes.
  • If the issue persists, try factory resetting your network. Take note that this will remove all network data.

Let me know if this helps.

Best,
Lovely

Issue has been happening since I installed the network.
Six, the router and five extender points
Google Fiber provider
I do have a switch directly off the fiber link to split the internet service

In a two story house, it's hard to define "two rooms" when going from first to second, but I've tried to keep them relatively close to each other
Is "_" considered a special character?
IPV6 has been off since installation
I have an internal DNS server, so I have used the second DNS entry for that IP address (historically)
I'll try the two minute recycle; I'm normally not that patient :).

Thanks

Hello MikeVee,

I apologize; I was trying to check if you were still having trouble. Regarding your network configuration, we only recommend a maximum of five Google Nest Wifi devices in one network. Adding more will be detrimental to the performance of your mesh system. Please try removing the switch in your network and observe if there are any improvements in your network. Also, "_" is considered a special character, so I highly suggest changing your Wi-Fi password to only letters and numbers.

Let me know if there's something I missed.

Thanks,
Lovely

Ok, so for clarification.  My wifi network name (not password) having a "_" in it is a bad thing, AND adding points to the mesh (so 1 router and five wifi points) is also a bad thing?

I'm confirming all this again because while removing the point is easy, reconfiguring every wifi device in my home with a new network is a task.

Thanks

Hi MikeVee,

Sorry for not getting back to you sooner. Please try removing one of your Google Nest Wifi devices. Try changing their placement and making sure there's minimal to no interference (concrete, bulletproof glass, metal, mirror, etc.) that could affect the performance of your devices.

Sincerely,
Lovely
