Extending wifi to garden office via ethernet

Cathalosullivan

Hey all,

I'm trying to improve my connectivity in my garden office and having frequent dropout/loss of signal issues with my wifi point.

My current setup is as follows:

- Nest Wifi Hub is connected to my main router and located in my house. It is located as close to my garden office as possible to maximise signal

- Google wifi router is acting as a wifi point in my garden office. This is also located as close as possible to my Nest Wifi Hub to maximise signal

I have recently wired an ethernet cable to my garden office. I thought that by simply plugging the ethernet cable into the Google Wifi Router my problems would be solved. But, unfortunately I am still getting the same issues.

What steps do I need to take to solve this issue?

I have seen some other posts that may have already answered this but I'm not overly technical and find some of it difficult to understand! I've read that possibly I cannot connect a Google Wifi via ethernet when using a Nest Hub but again, I'm not certain.

Any help is much appreciated

Hi Cathalosullivan,

Thanks for posting in the community!

I'm so sorry to hear that the signal is not strong enough in your office garden. I certainly understand your frustration, sometimes technical information can be overwhelming. But no worries; here's help in a simpler way! Kindly follow the next steps:

  • Change DNS Server: Consider changing the DNS server for potentially improved performance.
  • Reposition Mesh Points: For a stronger connection, try repositioning your Google WiFi points closer to your router, if possible.
  • Factory Reset: You could try giving your Google Nest WiFi router a factory reset. Just keep in mind that doing this will erase all of your network settings and force you to add your mesh points again.

Hopefully, these steps will strengthen your Wi-Fi signal in your garden office. If you have any further questions or need additional help, feel free to ask!

Best regards,

Nery.

Thanks Nery,

I have tried those steps and unfortunately none have worked. Is there additional hardware I can purchase such as a switch for the ethernet cable in my office? I need the wifi to be super reliable and from my experience to date, connecting via mesh from the house isn't as reliable as I need

Hi Cathalosullivan,

I'm so sorry to hear that the previous steps I sent did not work. I do not recommend buying switches because sometimes they cause a slower internet connection. To help diagnose the problem, I have a few questions:

  • Which Google Wifi system do you have (Google Nest Wifi router, Google Wifi point, Nest Wifi Pro point)?
  • What is the distance between each device?
  • What is the square footage of your house (approximately)?
  • Can you describe the color of the LED light on your router when it disconnects (e.g., solid red, blinking white)?

The answers to these questions will help me provide more specific troubleshooting steps. Keep me posted about everything you need.

Best regards,
Nery.
