Google Wifi Performance is crap!

Florent
Community Member

I want to share with you the story of an unhappy Nest Wifi customer. I bought and set it up two years ago and it worked really well and then one day it statred to do outages and performance becme crap. I tried all the tricks I could find here, and in despair, i bought a netgear solution.

So now, I have only one internet router. On it I have plugged a Nest Mesh bought recently and I have also plugged a Netgear equivalent. And then, sitting a couple meter away from that setup, I tested both Wifi. The Download / upload of the Nest Wifi is 44/28 MB, while the Netgear is 404 / 21, so 10 times slower than the competition. And while I have zero outage on the Netgear I have many with the Nest Mesh.

The Nest Mesh wifi solution has suffered an update that creates all those problems. and visibly the Nest team is clueless about what as it has now been going on for months and thousands of customers have complained and many switched out. So did I, the nest mesh is dedicated for guests only now 🙂

Yep I have this exact same issue since a couple of months.  For over a year it was perfect, now I have to constantly reboot the Mesh AP to reset to full speed.  To me I think that there is something very wrong with prioritization algorithm such that some devices get deprioritized constantly.   I have very simple setup DOCSIS 3.0 modem on a 300/20 plan.  Simple 8 port switch and 2 pod Google Mesh.  3 hardwired devices(2x Desktops and 1x NAS) and about 35 Wifi devices.  The hardwired devices are constantly deprioritized to <5Mbs vs 300Mbps.  Very Very Annoying.

it is sooooo annoying !

Hi Florent,

Sorry to hear about the performance issues you've had with your Nest WiFi mesh network. I know how frustrating disconnects and performance issues can be. I did want to let you know that a new firmware update was rolling out now and it should appear on your devices soon. You don't need to do anything to upgrade, it will download and install automatically. If you receive that update and don't see any improvement, please let me know and we can walk through some troubleshooting to improve things for you. Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Jeff

Hi folks,

@Jeff, thanks for the helpful responses.

@Florent, your Google Nest Wifi will automatically receive over-the-air updates about any software and hardware-related fix or firmware updates as long as it's constantly powered on and connected to the Wi-Fi network.

Cheers,

Mel

I am seeing an improved state where i do not have to reboot the mesh daily, but I am not getting full bandwidth.  I have a full test plan set to runt his weekend that will bring some data to the conversation.

I completed my testing and now I appear to be in a state where all devices are max 90 Mbit/sec down on a 300 Mbit down Internet plan.  My setup is a DOCSIS 3 modem, 8 port switch, Google Mesh.   I tested 3 days in a row a LAN connected desktop, wireless desktop, iPhone and the Mesh device itself.  All report stable 90 down 20 up.  But I have a 300 Mbit down and 20 Mbit up Internet plan.

So it's fantastic that the performance is no longer eroding away, but concerning that I cannot get full service speeds...

Any thoughts?

Hey spcox197x,

There could be multiple reasons you are not getting the full speed on your devices, such as location of those devices. I found an article with some troubleshooting steps for slower speeds. This also provides more details. Please let me know if that helps, or if you have questions from here.

I spcox197x,

I haven't received the update version number yet. As soon as I have that, I'll circle back and share it so people can be on the lookout for it to hit their devices.

Thanks,

Hi folks,

@EdwardT, thanks for the follow up.

Thanks for getting back to us, @klowenst.

The software update is rolling out now. It goes out in waves to devices and everyone will have it within the next 1-2 weeks. It really could land any day and you won't need to do anything to receive the update, it will download and install automatically for you.  Also, we do not have any news to share about the exact firmware version. If you have other questions, let me know.

Thanks,
Mel
