cnn on apple tv not streaming when connected to nest wifi

About a week ago, the CNN app on my Apple TV stopped streaming video indicating that "the video is not currently available".  Other streaming apps continued to work.  Resets of equipment and  firewalls did not fix.  Reinstallation of app did not fix.  On a whim I connected the Apple TV to my personal hotspot on my iPhone, which is also connected to the Nest WiFi.  Streaming of CNN again worked.  So, how can I get streaming from my CNN app on Apple TV to work again without having to use an intermediate device?

Hi greggmicalizio,

That certainly isn’t the experience we want you to have, and we apologize for the delay. A few questions: are you using a modem/router combo from your Internet service provider (ISP)? Which Google/Nest router are we working with? What device are you using to set up your network (iOS or Android)?

The fact that CNN worked on your Apple TV when connected to your iPhone's hotspot suggests an issue specific to your Nest Wifi network configuration and the CNN app. Here are some troubleshooting steps you can try to restore normal functionality without using the hotspot:

1. Network Optimization:

  • Restart Devices: Reboot your Nest Wifi router and Apple TV. Sometimes a simple restart can resolve temporary glitches. You can also do a sequential reboot of your entire network and see if that helps, or please perform a 2-minute power cycle on your entire network to re-establish the connection on your connected devices. Here's how:
    1. Disconnect the power from the modem.
    2. Disconnect the Ethernet cable and power cord from the parent point.
    3. Disconnect the power cord from the child points.
    4. Leave everything unplugged for 2 minutes.
    5. Connect the power cord to the modem then to your router and points.
  • Check Network Connectivity: Ensure your Apple TV has a strong and stable Wi-Fi connection to your Nest Wifi network. You can check the signal strength in the Apple TV settings.
  • Placement: If possible, optimize the placement of your Nest Wifi router and points to minimize interference from walls, furniture, or other electronic devices. Refer to the Google Nest Wifi placement guide for recommendations.

2. App-Specific Troubleshooting:

  • Check for any available updates for the CNN app on your Apple TV. Updated versions often contain bug fixes and compatibility improvements.
  • If an update isn't available, try uninstalling and reinstalling the CNN app on your Apple TV. This can sometimes clear any corrupted data or configuration issues.
  • If the above steps don't work, consider reaching out to CNN app support. They might have specific troubleshooting suggestions or insights into known issues with the app on Apple TV.

3. Advanced Troubleshooting:

  • Try changing the DNS settings on your Nest Wifi router. Use a public DNS server like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) and see if it resolves the issue.
  • If you have any advanced firewall rules configured on your Nest Wifi, ensure they aren't inadvertently blocking traffic from the CNN app.

Additional Tips:

  • Check for Outage Reports: While unlikely, briefly check online resources or social media to see if there are any reported outages or service disruptions affecting the CNN app.
  • Try a Different Streaming Device: If possible, test the CNN app on another streaming device connected to your Nest Wifi network to see if the issue is isolated to the Apple TV.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Dan
