Google Nest requires that household members have a gmail account in order to use the Google Home app, so an invite can only be sent to someone with a gmail account, though they don't document this requirement very clearly at all. In your case, is the Google Home app by any chance suggesting gmail usernames based on your wife's actual email username?

Hey Merlarky,

Thanks for the insights, MplsCustomer.

Anyone who joins the customer’s local Wi-Fi network gets an option in the Google Home app to join the home. This action doesn’t give the person the access to the customer’s devices, but it sends a request to the current home members. The current home members can approve or deny that request.
Certain accounts don't have the ability to be a home member. You can't invite the persons with the following accounts:

  • Google Workspace (G Suite) accounts
  • Google Account for children under 13 (or the applicable age in the customer's country).

Try these steps:

  1. Open the Google Home app.
  2. Switch to the correct home.
  3. Tap Settings > Household > Invite person.
  4. Enter the name or email address of the person > tap Next.
  5. Customers can find the information that's shared when they add someone to their home. Tap Next to continue.
  6. Review the person’s access to the home > tap Send.
  7. If the invitee isn't already in a family group, the customer (current member who invites) gets a prompt if they like to add them. Tap Add to Family to send an invite to the family group or No Thanks to skip this step.
Note: Customers can have a maximum of 6 members in a family group. If they have a full family group, this option doesn't appear.

Let us know how it goes.

Best,

Alex

Why do you say "Customers can have a maximum of 6 members in a family group, when this Google Nest Help page says:

"The maximum number of people who can share a Nest home is 20:
     One Owner
Up to nine additional people with Full Access
Up to 10 people with Home Entry Only"

Hey MplsCustomer,

If the customer is referring to their Nest account on the Nest app and haven't migrated their account, the article you shared is applicable. However, if they are talking about the Google Home app then, it's only limited to 6 members in a family group. Check this guide for additional information.

Thanks,

Alex

@Azarco

Ah, I stand corrected. It is yet another example where the Google Home app is inferior to the Google Nest app.
