Nest Hub 1st and 2nd Gen UI is extremely slow and totally useless

The UI of the Nest Hub 1st and 2nd Gen devices is extremely slow and totally useless.

I have read many many posts about this not only here but also on reddit and many other forums....

Since the last UI revamp in 1st Gen the UI is practically impossible to use.... Then Google released 2nd gen in 2021 with exactly the same problem.

Now more than 2 years later the problem is still without any solution....

What exactly does Google intend with these devices ¿? the touch interaction with the device is hopeless and totally useless ... the UI moves at 10fps at best....

Is there hope to have something worth using?

Hi Istarth,

Thanks for reaching out. That certainly hasn’t been easy for you. Let’s check out what’s going on. We'll work together to identify the cause of the problem and find a solution. A few questions: when did it begin? Were there any recent changes made before it started? What is the distance between your Google Nest Hub and Google Nest Hub 2nd gen from your Wi-Fi router? Also, what steps have you taken so far?

Let’s try to refresh your devices and observe if it makes a difference. First, reboot your Wi-Fi router, and once the network is back up, do the same thing to your Nest displays.

Regards,

Juni

Many thanks Juni for the support.

Let me answer your questions:

when did it begin?:

- I have 2 2nd gen units in different houses with different accounts and different WiFi. Both have the same problem since the beginning (since the first minute).

- I have also 2 1st gen units in different houses with different accounts and different WiFi. Both have the same problem but ONLY after "new" ui update... old ui was working much better.

Were there any recent changes made before it started?

Not at all. The 4 units are working as described with no modifications at all from my side.... (and all of them also with or without "beta" program enabled)

What is the distance between your Google Nest Hub and Google Nest Hub 2nd gen from your Wi-Fi router?

In both houses all units are really close from the router. By the way, the problem is the same connecting to a 2.4G or a 5G WiFi network... there is no differences at all in any of the configurations.

Also, what steps have you taken so far?

It is very easy to reproduce the problem....

1. Hard reset the unit.

2. Add the unit to home app

3.a. With my 2nd gen units the problem is there since the first start with nothing more but just adding the unit to home app.

3.b. With my 1st gen units while they are running with the factory "os" version (old ui) the performance is much better... just after seconds the unit get the OTA with the new UI and just after the reboot... the unit works the same as 2nd gen units.... and the problem is exactly the same...

Let’s try to refresh your devices and observe if it makes a difference. First, reboot your Wi-Fi router, and once the network is back up, do the same thing to your Nest displays.

I have tried everything... router reboot... different wifi configurations (2.4G and 5G), performing a hard reset in the units.... the result is exactly the same....

--------------------------------

Extra Info:

My uncle has another unit, and also my sister, both with the same problem also...

So.... a total of 2 1st gen units and 4 2nd gen units... different Wifi, different houses, different accounts... all of them are working exactly the same... and as far as I see in other forums this is a well known problem... but years after and even after 2nd gen release.... is the same...

In my opinion the problem is one of the next things (or both at the same time):

1. The CPU is MUCH slower than the SO with the new UI needs...

2. The development of the new UI is quite poor or at least lacks the slightest optimisation.

I really thin Google should address this problem... since the units are totally useless as they are now...

Is there anything that can be done from my side ¿?

Best regards,

Jose Manuel.

  3. Tap your device's tile.
  4. At the top right, tap Settings and then Device information.

Hey ho. It's the latest update. It screwed one of my hubs 2 gen completely. It gets continuously disconnected  and it's become annoyingly slow !!! I've got two hubs 2gen but kept only one connected so the other one did not had any chance to get the lasted update and guess what: it's working as it should. Google, please fix this. Thanks

My problem is nothing to do with that... I have no problems with the connectivity of my units.... and is nothing to do with the last update since it is happening since new UI release in March 2022 (so many updates has been released after that date and with all of them the problem is the same). So let's not mix up different problems please.

Nest Hub UI performance is extremely bad any transition feels like 10-15 fps max..

You're absolutely right about the UI. It's been always slow but the one I kept connected started behaving even worse after the last update. It basically rendered the crap completely unusable and it feels like 1-2 FPS.
