Nest cam says it's being viewed. Who is viewing my nest cam?

Nest hub will randomly say across the display "Nest cam is being viewed". My wife and I are the only ones with access so this is concerning. It also started motion activated recording everything randomly and I can't get it to stop doing that. Is someone watching me?

Hiya!
I do understand it can be quite concerning to having a pop up that your nest cam is being viewed and can be a security risk and the cause can due be due to many things.

For someone to have access to your nest devices they must first have access to your home with the 'Google Home App' and are added to the family household. I have compiled a list of things you can do to check for any an unauthorized activity and better strengthen your security to avoid these issues again:

  • Check who is in the family household in the Google Home app and remove anyone you don't want to have access to your home and remove any person who you don't know from accessing all your nest devices.
  • Check your google account security where your logged in and review the latest sign in your account and your wife.
  • Also check what devices are connected to your router and if any devices that are on there you don't recognize remove the device and immediately change the password on the router (this will require you to update/login with the new password the Wi-Fi on all of your nest devices again)
  • If your password has been changed without your knowledge or someone else knows your password, please do change it add MFA to your accounts to boost security.
  • Double check where the motion sensor zone is and adjust to what it was before.
  • Double check settings for your nest cams and products are set to what you previously set them as (if someone has gained access to your account or home app, they can change settings)
  • Look at old footage recorded to see if what cameras have been recording and how long for and for any possible intruder.

There are more ways to secure your nest products and devices but be sure to also invest in addional security to help protect your home such as a security alarm, motion sensor alarms etc. to further protect.

If you feel like you're still in danger and someone is watching, you or your wife, please do contact 911 or speak to your local law enforcement/police to file a report and get the help from them to figure out and catch whoever is doing it.

Also, if you have a nest hub with a camera you can use the privacy slider on the device to cover up the camera.

Hi Kcquinney,

Thanks for posting on the community. The information provided is really valuable for me. In this case I need to ask you some questions:

  • When did you notice the issue?
  • Do you have Nest Cameras in your house?
  • Are there any other people connected to your Wi-Fi network?

Keep me posted.

Regards,
Jenny.
