Stop reacting to "hey google hey google"!

SunnyRio
Community Member

Having to post this again due to the same question being closed due to inactivity (rolls eyes).

I'll reword it to see if I'm understood this time.

If I say "hey google", and it takes a while to notice, I might say "hey google" again. But then I find it noticed the first one late, and then tries to answer the question "hey google" with something silly like "hey indeed". And then I have to start again.

When I say "Hey Google" the Nest Hub immediately displays its tabs. If I say "Hey Google" again, it displays "Hey Google" at the top but doesn't do anything; if I say nothing more, nothing happens and the screen goes back to the clock. If I say "Hey Google" several times with pauses it displays each one, and then after a few seconds, it finally says "That's me, how can I help?"

@SunnyRio

If you say "Hey Google, Hey Google", what would you like Google Assistant to do? If I try this and follow it with a question, Google Assistant just ignores the duplicate "Hey Google". For example, if I say "Hey Google, Hey Google, what time is it?", the text displayed on the screen is just "hey Google what time is it?", and Google Assistant responds with the time.

But I was doing it with with a pause. For example, I might say "Hey Google", wait to see if the lights come on, since it's awful at noticing I'm talking to it and I don't want to ask a big question only to have to repeat myself, they don't come on immediately, so I say "Hey Google" again. But it did hear me the first time and was being slow. So it hears the second one aswell. Try again, but say nothing after the second "Hey Google". Mine told me how it was feeling! Yesterday it said "Hey indeed!"

Seems they've updated it. I have the original speaker without a display. "Hey Google" turns on the coloured dots. Another "Hey Google" makes it say "Hey indeed" or explain how it feels today.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for visiting the Community.

We'd like to check if you happen to still experience the same thing. Feel free to respond to this thread so we can try some steps.

Best,

Princess

I do on my original Google Home Speaker. I'm assuming it uses outdated software. According to my phone's app when interrogating it, it's:

System firmware: 324896
Cast firmware: 1.56.324896

Is there a newer version for this model?

Hi SunnyRio,

Here's the latest cast firmware version of the Google Nest speakers: https://goo.gle/3LADFFD

Do you still remember when and where did you purchase your Google Home?

Best,

Princess

I seem to be on the latest, mine is the original Google home, and is already on 1.56.324896.

This is the very one I purchased: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/114736424401

Hi SunnyRio,

Thanks! I really wish I could do something about this, however, we can no longer replace your Google Home since it is already out of warranty. You may check on this link for more details about our warranty policy.

Best,

Princess

But it's not broken, why would I want to return it?  I would just like the software improved.

Hi SunnyRio,

Right now, we don't have any news to when the next update will be available. If there's any update in the future, make sure that the device is plugged in for it to receive an update.

Best,

Princess

I guess it's a case of they want us to buy new kit.😡

Not fixed, but I don't think it can be unless a software update is made for my (older?) device.  Have they stopped making this version?

Just an added question: when and where did you purchase your device? Also, have you tried connecting you Google Home device to a mobile hotspot to check if it will have the same behavior?

Why is my Google Home so rubbish at knowing when I'm talking to it?  Half the time I say "Hey Google", it ignores me.  Yet other times I'm having a conversation with someone in the room, I notice the lights are on like it's listening (although it never responds which is even more weird).  Why is it listening?  I never said the word Google.  Where is the conversation going?  Is someone spying on us?

@SunnyRio

As soon as we say "Hey Google" the screen on our Nest Hubs changes and menu/tab options display across the top.

Once in a very great while, during a family discussion, Google responds with something. We've always assumed it heard something that sounded like "Hey Google" and then attempted to interpret the next words in the conversation as a command or question.  Siri on our iPhones can do the same thing.

I don't have an accent and I speak pretty clearly, but mine (even set to full "Hey Google sensitivity") will ignore "Hey Google", yet respond when I repeat it precisely the same with no change whatsoever in intonation.  How can a device in the 21st century not be able to distinguish two words!?

Note my original post stated I have a 1st gen, not a Nest Hub.

Hi SunnyRio,

Thanks for the help, @MplsCustomer.

@SunnyRio, thanks for posting. I’m sorry for the trouble this has caused you, let me help you out. Common causes for this issue is when your Google Home incorrectly thought it heard the Hotword (“Okay Google” or “Hey Google”) or you were having a conversation about Google that falsely activated the device. Since you mentioned that it happened when you are talking to someone, there is a possibility that one of these scenarios happened.

You can do a sequential reboot. First, unplug your Google Home for 30 seconds, then do the same thing to your Wi-Fi router to refresh both devices and your Wi-Fi signal. Observe if this will happen again. Don’t hesitate to update this thread, so we’ll know if you need further assistance.

I find it happens when the room is completely quiet, and the only sound is me saying "Hey Google".  Yet it doesn't respond.  Then I repeat it precisely the same volume etc, and it hears me.

I've already tried resetting everything, it's just rubbish at hearing me.  Either the mic inside it is poor quality, or the processing to recognise the hotword is rubbish.  I've listened back to recordings on my account, and I can very easily understand what I'm saying.  On one occasion I clearly said "twenty four" and it thought I said "twelve".  How is that even possible?  In that case I assume the voice to text was being done by the Google servers, so no excuse for lack of power.

Hi there,

Thanks for the response. Just to confirm, your Google Home that's activating automatically concern is not happening anymore, is that correct? For your Google Home that is not responsive, it appears that there is another thread that you created about it. I would suggest for you ro reply to that thread so we can better assist you.

It does still activate for no reason.  And nobody has said Hey or Google.

Hey SunnyRio,

Where is your device located? Also, when and where you purchase your device?

On top of a stereo (not playing), and close to an insect zapper and 4 monitors.  So plenty EMI, but not much noise.
I bought it on Ebay a month or two ago as a new customer return without fault.

Can we have a vote here - who has problems in general with their Google Home device understanding them, and what accent do you have?  I'm wondering if it's been designed by and for Americans, so when I try to use it in the UK with virtually no accent, it gets confused?  I'm not a Geordie, a Glaswegian, or any other absurd accent, I speak very clearly.  Yet it's constantly misunderstanding me.  For example "What's the temperature" often gives me a Wikipedia page describing what temperature is!  I was expecting the local weather!  Sometimes a simple maths calculation results in it giving me the history of the number four!

I've already trained my voice many times.
