Unable to connect to google nest

Danae
Community Member

Hello,

I am unable to connect my Google nest on Wi-Fi. I have successfully only connected it into my iPhone through the Google home app, but without internet connection.

It says unable to connect to Wi-Fi anytime I am trying.
Can you please help me sort this out? Important to note that it is a student accommodation Wi-Fi, where each tenant has individual username and password to connect to the network.

Thank you in advance,

Danae

You may need to ask whoever administers the Wi-Fi for your school dormitory whether it is possible to connect a Nest Hub or Nest Mini to the school's Wi-Fi and for assistance in how you would do that on their network. Each school can configure their Wi-Fi in different ways; when you connect to the school's Wi-Fi, you are probably going to a login page first, but there's no built-in way to direct the Nest Hub/Nest Mini to that login page.

You also might be able to set up a hotspot on your iPhone or your laptop (if you have one), and then connect your Nest Hub/Nest Mini to that hotspot, but that might be a cumbersome solution.

Hi Danae,

Thanks for posting and we’re sorry that setting up your Nest devices to Wi-Fi has been bothersome but, MplsCustomer is spot on. Everything that he said is correct.

The reason why we do not recommend you connect your Nest devices to a public Wi-Fi is due to privacy and security. Asking permission from the admin is the best way to go for them to accept your Nest device.

In the meantime, you can connect your Nest device straight to another phone’s hotspot while waiting for permission. We also do not recommend this since it’s unstable but, while waiting, we can further isolate your concern. You need to have 2 phones for this to work, one phone is what you will use to set up your Nest device and the other one is where you connect to via hotspot, instead of connecting to Wi-Fi.

Try it and let me know how it goes. Don’t forget to ask permission from the admin so that we would know what to do next.

Best,

Dan
